That "i" is replaced with "oi" sound is the Australian accent of the year 1788 when Aussies were still fresh off the ships from being British Convicts this accent however does not account for the free settlers. So it's one particular accent not be entire Australia and if you wanted to be technical

It is a hard for an American to do an Aussie accent but it easy for an Australian to do an American accent

Don't forget for all the Ozzie's out there. You may not hear an accent when you're talking to each other because you're used to each other's voices. But the way as Canadians here it is very different. I'm actually pretty good at imitating an Australian accent myself. I always enjoy meeting people from all over the world too.
