I will try to explain you the relationship they share in a simple and clear way: Anushka is Prabhas father's sister's daughter. As his father's sister belongs to another family after marriage , even Anushka belongs to another family . So he is her brother-in-law and she can marry him. The same way even the other guy is her brother-in-law and she can even marry him. It is just that two different families are living together.

Here's a little explanation: Let's see, there are two siblings, both are of same gender, then their kids are obviously cousins and considered brothers and sisters. If a guy and girl are siblings, their kids can be together if they like. It's acceptable in the culture. However such marriages are quite lesser now a days compared to olden times considering the genetic complications for the offsprings. Hope this info helps.

The same logic is used to determine which cousin is considered as a sister/brother equivalent and which cousin is considered in-laws..... while deciding upon a marriage with someone from a family of distant relatives (who are linked at the level of 2, 3 or more generations prior to theirs) : Eg: our mother's father's sister's daughter's children are considered as in-laws however, mother's father's brother's daughter's daughter is considered a brother or sister equivalent... And this link can happen from any earlier generations. The immediate family thing (marrying mother's brother's children or father's sister's children) used to happen before when the commute and financial stability was not there few decades ago, which isn't advisable as it can activate dormant bad genes causing anomolies in the progeny due to lack of diversity between the two partners. but now a days they just check if there is any possibility of them being considered as belonging to the same family i.e., brother/sister equivalent cousins or not to avoid any clashes before marriage... And also if it is a link from 3 generations or prior, them the genetic diversity is sufficient to not cause any anomolies. This is nothing but an age old system of tracking of family members who are considered inline or in-laws.

Not all cousins get married for ex: my son can marry my sis in laws(husband’s sister) or my brother’s daughter but he can’t marry my sister’s daughter or my husband’s brother’s daughter as she is considered sister. Nowadays very few people are getting married to their cousins . Fun fact: we have different names for different relations. 1. Akka- big sister 2. Chelli-younger sister 3. Mom’s sister- pinni 4. Hey guys..... In this movie Prabhas(Jai) and Anushka (Vennela) are not brother and sister. They are from different families and are distant cousins. It is common in some parts of India that distant cousins do get married and it's not incest. Children of our dad's brothers are cousins who are considered as brothers and sisters......but children of our dad's sisters become our brothers in laws and sisters in laws. It must be hard to understand but it is how it works in some parts of India!

@Aussie Dillon this is not messed up in south indian culture, cousins do get married to each other ( cousins are not stated cousins to the literal meaning as you think it is quite different in India), but just not to brother's brother children or sister's sister children, but it used to be quite common it still is and yes children are born healthy, my father example is my mother's uncle and yes I am born healthy. It is quite complex for foreigners but it is quite common in India. You might think it is incest but it is not. This is because of the cultural and religious differences. But Bhava is different from Uncle, English does not have a word for Bhava (it is a term used in a way to tell if you intend to get married in your family you can marry this person, for female it is "Mardhal" she is mostly his father's sister's daughter in this case.), meanwhile in india we have word for almost every relationship, like for example bhadah Amma for mother's elder sister but in English it only transalates to Aunt, but Aunt is only called "Aathah" who is actually is mother's brother's wife. That is why sometimes you see Indians hesitate to state their relations to foreigners because most of the time it will only transalate to uncle and aunt but according to indian languages it is wrong it is not translated like that.

Brother in law means cousin here. In South India, hindus girls also marries their uncle(Mother's brother) or Uncle's son. Its common there, but it is now being stopped for DNA problem. We East Indians r also shocked to see that tradition, we think only muslims do it. But Indian origin muslims also stop this tradition. Only limited to Bangladeshi origin muslims in India.
