I've never heard a piece of the classical era from which I have heard something so intensely terrifying. There is so much existential angst and crisis with this grand scale of writing.

The strangeness to you here is probably the fact that this music is in the early romantic style. I think I hear some Sturm and Drang.

The string players sound horrible. There's no excuse for "period" instruments, period.

And a "period" harp, to add insult to injury. There are good surviving instruments, this is not one of them.
