Great to see this performance discussed! I’d done a project on this solo for a history class, and it was crazy to unpack how many elements there were to this performance becoming so legendary. Great video🙌

Really, it's what happened after the solo. But Paul brought us there. I think I have the entire tune in my head.

Paul Gonsalves felt that his ballad playing was often overlooked. He was in fact probably a better ballad player than even Ben Webster or Dexter. My opinion.

@barneylessing4781 I think Gonsalves is underrated overall. He is so modern in his phrasing and his sound is full of soul. I don't like making rankings, I don't think it is possible to compare different saxophone players big as Dexter or Ben Webster. They are just giants, including Paul Gonsalves.

As he says, that isn't Diminuendo and Crescendo as played at Newport. Way too fast. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXq7aJmkjqaBl80si=k3zrBFeQ5-XBFm28

The composition is the same. Different concert. Paul is on fire on both versions! 🔥
