I met Michael on a plane once flying back from London. He will always be one of the nicest people I’ve met. There's a bit of a semantic issue here being used to create the "shock" value that mirrors don't flip anything, I'm afraid. Mirrors absolutely flip what you see, front to back. The projected image is inverted depth-wise, which means the left and right sides of the projected object are now inverted relative to the original object axis. In other words, the result is *equivalent* to a horizontal +/- x-axis (left/right) inversion *relative to the original object* even though physically the inversion is of the +/- z-axis (front/back) values. So no, you're brain is not "wrongly flipping" the reflection, it is able to "correctly" compare the projection with the original object and realize that no matter which way you hypothetically rotate the reflected object, one axis will be inverted relative to the original.
