His disconnect from others outside his "reflection/delusion" chamber and the disinterest and criticism of others outside it despite not being critical of himself. his tone is apathetic and he only makes jovial comments centered around himself. likely due to the fact he thinks "god is in my skin". this may seem weird but remember that there's a single frame next to the end (where his mirror flips to show opal's face) that shows a really distrubing face, indicating that the reflections are just his ego/imagination. so by that logic, he imagines that god is in his skin, making the heart beat as if it was alive

I need to do more research but I think that type of narcissism the father has is called "vulnerable narcissism", where instead of outright boasting, the person who has it is neurotic and constantly worries about how they are perceived, can feel anxious and empty, are hypersensitive and easily hurt, can turn on themselves when things don't go as planned, and cannot deal with any kind of failure or rejection. The father seems to not be boasting about his own looks as much as he is using the constant need to fix his appearance to reassure himself that he is not a failure. He wants to be seen as put together and successful, and when that image is threatened, it sends him further into an obsessive spiral and self loathing and trying to make himself perfect. Maybe that's not it but I definitely get that vibe from his character

I would recommend following HG Tudor's work on narcissism. He is a diagnosed narcissistic psychopath and his work is amazing. Believe it of not, these categories of "covert" or "grandiose" narcissists aren't good at describing these narcissists because these are more behaviours that all narcissists use rather than categories unto themselves. His framework is a lot better, for example a middle midrange type A somatic is a better descriptor of the father. His work is amazing and has helped me tremendously, All the best.

The father only ever talks about fixing his appearance to look perfect and how he says he already “looks good” but at 0:47, he’s destroying his appearance (as seen by the mirrors on the left and bottom right.) That might be why at the end of Opal, we get to see the father’s true face for a brief second. The face we see of the father in the mirrors when we first see him is an illusion made from his ego, while his true face is absolutely terrifying. Because of this ugly truth, he hides behind a chamber of mirrors. In conclusion: the more he tries to fix himself, the worse his appearance gets.

I love how there's something deeply relatable about this awful character. The song suggests his fear of rejection is what caused him to begin to obsess over his looks, causing him to isolate in his chamber. "Gotta be seen by someone out there," is also kind of haunting, because, despite him having a need to be seen by literally anybody, he *isn't* seen by anyone other than himself, yet he is still in constant fear of rejection and obviously completely delusional. At 0:48, in the bottom right, you can see a brush chipping into his skin, which to me seems to elude to self-harm or cutting. Despite how over the top the character is, all of these implications are very disturbing given how many people can probably relate to the anxiety of rejection, the perfectionism, and the loneliness and isolation.

The thing that makes the visuals of this song that great, is that if you look closely, it's building a face, then separating again, and then it builds a face again (with the reflections), even the movements at 0:24 turn two random body parts to a full face, as they both look to be heading in different directions, but they quickly look at you (creating the perception of a face), then at 0:27 it literally creates a face, then at 0:37 the nose and the eye are in position to resemble a face, but at the same time, you can feel that weird sensation when the brush touches the eye. At the end of the 0:37 sequence you can see how the mouth breaks the face perception, then in the next sequence at 0:40 it breaks the face perception entirely, as now there are only random body parts.

All three of the adult figures are tragic in their own way, but the way the father is different is that he isn't outwardly "abusive", just pathetic and emotionally stunted. One gets the impression that, if anyone does anything for Claire, it's probably him that does most of it seeing as he at least seems to vaguely care whether or not she lives from one day to the next. Definitely not a perfect parent, but at least tormenting and alienating her isn't something he does deliberately

I thought that too, he seems to be mostly consumed by an inferiority complex rather than a vice or abuse cycle, and he's the only one who didn't try attacking Claire. In fact, Claire didn't even seem scared of him (only briefly startled when she tried to walk away and he called for her to stay), her expression seemed more annoyed/exasperated with him. Definitely not a good thing, and it's unclear if he would turn to outright abuse if she did something to provoke him (as his voice did become somewhat sharp when he called for her to stay, and he did ultimately chase after her with grandpa and the mother), but he definitely seems to be the family member that Claire's safest with. Still not for a good reason, but at least there's someone who's somewhat sympathetic in the household (aside from Claire herself, obviously)
@FrankDickerstein Жыл бұрын
He's emotionally abusive and totally self absorbed. He shifts the mirrors to reflect himself whenever she comes into his line of sight only shifting to her when she tries to get away. He pesters her for praise and is really passive aggressive when she tries to leave. He's as bad as the other two maybe worse than the GrandDad. If it was just the dad and Claire living together she would die from neglect. He has no paternal instincts. He wants to be coddled and praised not take responsibility. Just because he might not physically harm her doesn't mean he's a good guy or a fit parent. "Not perfect" is putting it much too lightly.

Usually don't wanna be this type of person, but here I go with the big ass paragraph about why this song talks to me. Well, first of all, it's a fucking bop- can't wait for a loop version! scond of all, it reminded me of my childhood and middle school periods of my life: I've always been a fatso, my parents couldn't support each other and often tried to tear me apart between one of another, I lived in poverty for a while, yadayadayada- I looked like a broken mess as a child that wore oversized clothes and had a big ass frame all the time, I got mocked at for being fat and ugly, I had trouble making friends, I was angry all the time, shit, I hated life and I wanted to end it. Eventually, all the abuse and mockery lead to something somewhat good: I wanted to feel and look better, I worked hard to lose weight, got muscular and all that, I only picked nice clothes before going out, but it slowly became an obsession: I took four showers a day, I combed my hair for hours, I absolutely REFUSED to go to school when I wasn't feeling absolutely pretty and nice, I got depressed and even cried when I couldn't wear something that I considered absolutely impeccable, I checked a mirror (or any kind of reflections) every hours to check if I was still okay, and was horrified when I though I wasn't. Nowadays it's getting better, I'm over all of this, I look good enough, I have greater preoccupations in life, but I still have some habits from that time; too much time wasted on preparing myself and taking care of details that no one will notice for example, anyway... If you're being judged to the point of being broken, please, use your rage to better yourself, but not to the point of making it your life's sole goal, or you'll destroy yourself even more.

The ironic thing is that he has so many mirrors yet when we get to see his face at the end he has no eyes.
@Bitchpleasegivemeafry3 жыл бұрын
I’m assuming that’s either how Claire sees him, or that’s how he sees himself. Or, maybe he felt as though he didn’t do well at “fixing” himself, so he destroyed his face (at the end of the song) and restarted, and the end face is the restart.
@Yuya_CindyNero Жыл бұрын
@@Bitchpleasegivemeafry The theory I had was that, in the mother’s song, you can see a sequence near the end where she’s hitting someone who’s calling 911. Maybe he got beaten so many times by his wife his face is now completely deformed. That’s probably why he is so obsessed with his appearance, because he doesn’t want people to see all the wounds he has from his wife.

@@kofizayn6077Now my theory is the same bro, the father probably had that appearance and his wife had crises when he took drugs and exploded at everyone in the house, then one day The father couldn't bear to see what was happening and called 911. The mother became more hysterical and with some blunt object hit him mercilessly until he was deformed. That would explain several things, 1 the mother repents for the atrocity she iso (as briefly mentioned. 2 the father was traumatized and that is why he wants to look perfect. In fact, it is likely that what he wears on his face is some device to keep his face in shape and he manages to ignore that he is Deformed, it also explains why at the end for a moment his face looks horrible and is why he is. In the end I ended up writing a lot XD

All he wants is undivided approval and anything less is unacceptable. This is taking into consideration during his conversation with Opal "Claire". When she tries to leave he reacts harshly. He says he wants to be seen but all he does is hide behind mirrors. He wants to grow as a person but won't accept his true flaws.
@MoonMistZeroАй бұрын
The details and understanding of this character are astounding. How quickly things got dark when his mirror was just barely off and not directly on him, and the line about being on the brink of visual epiphany is sooo accurate for those times you get stuck at looking at yourself in the mirror for those who’ve experienced that. It’s like chasing a high trying to nit pick or any self admiration you engage in.

I always wondered what that metal contraption was on the father's head - and now I think I know what it is. It is the only thing holding his face together, and his fragile remains of his mind. If he removes it not only will his face fall apart but also his sanity which is already slowly slipping away. A creepy but really relatable character to those who suffer with body or personality disorders - nobody is happy in this short film. Edit: I now realise it is about narcissists, too. Still, I feel sorry for the guy.
