I don't want to sound overly dramatic, but I swear that discovering about, and taking, this drug has been one of the most important life-changing things I've ever done in my life. I went from like 10-20min of REM sleep for YEARS to literally 2 hours per night. I don't have any side-effects, and I don't feel groggy or weird. I think I just got so used to feeling in a fog from years and years of exhaustion. I only take 3.75mg, which is half of the lowest kiddie dose 7.5mg and I am out within an hour or two. It doesn't seem to disrupt sleep architecture in a negative way, it feels like it improves natural sleep. After 2-3 days of starting this, it was the first time in like a decade or more that I didn't feel tired. It's been a miracle. Thanks for the in-depth video!

Have you gained any weight from it? My Dr just prescribed it to me for insomnia (7.5mg at bedtime) and I’m hesitating to take it because of the weight gain side effect that seems to plague so many that take it. You are a great man! This medicine began helping me after about 25 days at 30 mg. I've been suffering with depression, insomnia, and physical pain from Fibromyalgia. I've been watching most of your videos for years now and I've learned more from you than any doctor. I am so greatful and I appreciate your knowledge and respect you so much. I do believe you have changed my life as I am no longer suicidal, I was able to sleep last night and I woke up feeling like a new person. I was SSRI intolerant and I could not tolerate any medication all my life till now. At first this medication did cause some side effects but I just kept taking them as I had no other hope of help. I feel as though my life just changed overnight. What a father's day gift this is. I wish I could shake your hand and thank you. The very best to you doctor I will forever be thankful to you.

Certainly am. I'm doing a lot more activities, and finally have a normal life because I'm not looking at life through the filter of depression. I have held a job for a long time and yes you're right. The antipsychotic or mood stabilizer prevents mania. However I think it's only a risk of mania when you first start taking it. I finally have my life back. I'm driving cars, have a wholesome relationship and actually have energy now thanks to this medication. I think the mirtazapine only increased the serotonergic behaviour, once bipolar people adjust to taking it, we're fine :)

He did leave out one crucial fact that you should be aware of though, Mirtazapine is an antichollinergic substance meaning it lowers acetylcholine levels in the brain and throughout the body. Acetylcholine is one of the most essential compounds to us as humans, it regluates sleep, histamine production, memory, visual preception, mood, and more. This is bad in the case of mirtazapine because you want to have acetylcholine, but mirtazapine being a muscarinic receptor antagonist blocks our body from producing normal levels of acetylcholine. Side effects of antichollinergic use include, dry mouth, hot and cold flashes, depression, anxiety, early onset dementia, alzhimers, delirium, psychosis, intoxication, brain fog, insomnia, narcolepsy, and parkinsons disease due to dopamine suppression caused by antichollinergics. www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2016/020415s030lbl.pdf www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5383251/ www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/two-types-of-drugs-you-may-want-to-avoid-for-the-sake-of-your-brain I encourage you to read these articles if you really want to know what this drug can do, check this website out www.erowid.org/pharms/mirtazapine/

@@maybenotsure5380 holy shit, I have really bad insomnia and depression and I just had a really bad experience on quetiapine (heart palpitations, SUPER dizzy, nearly passing out, feeling sick to my stomach) after having these effects I decided to look into medications so much more and thousands of other people have had what I went through, the feeling of dread/panic attacks sound similar to this, my doctor has just recommended mirtazapine to me so I've looked it up, if there is so much as a chance of anything CLOSE to what I went through I'm not going near it. I just need something to help me sleep when I have work the next day. Not one single doctor has been able to be honest with me and talk to me about helping me fall asleep they never speak about these experiences. they want to prescribe me things that have affects on other aspects and not something that helps me sleep, I've lost jobs to this sleep issue and I feel like I will lose my current one too if this keeps happening, it can take me up to 6 hours to fall asleep and if I need to wake up at 5 in the morning it's just not possible like that. I guess my question is, when you started this medication did you have negative effects like the ones I experienced? seeing you reply to YOUR OWN comment about how awful it was has made me even more sceptical about taking it which is a good thing I think.

It is not something you can know and then you just avoid the medication because the side effects you MIGHT HAVE ARE VERY DIFFERENT FROM PERSON TO PERSON. Mirtazipine is also a muscarinic receptor antagonist, which when taken long term is shown to raise the chances of early onset dementia and alzheimers disease. Muscarinic receptor antagonists are known to also cause hot and cold flashes, delirium, brain fog, fatigue, dry mouth, dehydration, vertigo, Parkinson's disease and brain damage if taken for a long period of time. This is why antihistamines like benadryl, promethazine, and doxylamine are so dangerous as they work in the same manner, I really think that this should be mentioned, for a lot of people it could make depression worse. It's not a very safe drug even though it's been approved by the fda.

@@fistwood Yes. Some do exibit serotonergic effects, however they all exibit anticholinergic effects. Anticholinergic effects can be desireable in some cases, however, even in these cases, its still doing damage to your brain. Anticholinergic substances are linked to early onset dementia, fatigue, erectile dysfunction, loss of muscle control, parkinsons disease due to dopamine suppression, restless leg symdrome, dry mouth, depression, anxiety, cardiotoxic effects, and more. Doesnt sound worth the risk for its reletivly low success rate if you ask me. I've experienced anticholinergic toxcisity a couple times myself and its not pleasant, most poisons are actually antichollinergics. So i would be careful.
@mumbos8211
@mumbos8211 4 жыл бұрын
@Smatt All my sources say the anticholinergic properties are moderately strong, if youd like to provide info on this, I'll gladly look through it. Honestly even if it isnt a very potent anticholinergic, it still is one, prolonged use leads to inhibition of certain enzymes like with most anticholinergics, slowing the metabolism of this substance, so it does build up eventually. Even if you dont feel it effecting you. If a whole community is dedicated to taking it recreationally for its deliriant effects, it's likely potent enough to cause some damage, even weak anticholinergics like chlorpheniramine and brompheniramine have some toxic anticholinergic effects even though they're generally no where near the potency of stronger ones. It is a weak inhibitor of the CYP1A2, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4, these are all responsible for metabolism of mirtazipine and its metabolites. Its half life is also 20-40 hours, so when you take your next dose, you still have a good deal of the drug in your system. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirtazapine#Pharmacokinetics pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10885584/
@mumbos8211
@mumbos8211 4 жыл бұрын
@Smatt that study was conducted in 1995, one year before mirtazipine was fda approved and it was only available in the Netherlands for one year prior to this article being published. I don't want to sit here and argue, yes it is probably not the most potent anticholinergic substance out there, but you still cant deny that it does have some anticholinergic effects, which generally speaking isnt good. Where do you think its sedative effects come from? Its serotonin antagonism? Or its adrenergic effects? You tell me

I was prescribed Mirtazapine 15mg daily back in September 2019 for my depression. The sleep I had on it was incredible, I’d fall asleep 20 to 30 minutes after taking the medication. Only trouble would be waking up, I’d find it rather hard to wake up because the sleep was so deep. I did find myself getting slightly hungrier on the medication, having the occasional late night snack but no weight gain. I met with a therapist while I was on the medication to talk about my depression and she was shocked when I told her I was on the medication, worrying about the ‘weight gain’ side effects. I never went back to that therapist lol I’ve slowly tried to stop the medication as I want to prove to myself that I can sleep without but my success has been varied

I had pretty much ALL of the adverse reactions to mirtazapine. The first real nausea inducing migraine I've ever had, my tinnitis got dialed to 11, and I felt like my mind was a rag doll being thrown around by an angry child, and for 24 long hours, every 15 minutes like clockwork, my mood would totally collapse into crying catatonic mess. The only thing I didn't do is go blind.

It's amazing how different people react to Mirtazapine. I've had virtually no adverse effects to it. It's worked brillint for me, I hope they manage to find a AD which works for you.

Doctor. I am put on the beginner's dose which is 15mg. It is so sedative that 7.5mg keeps me asleep for 24. I am a very tall. Overweight even for my height. Why can't my body tolerate this drug? I am going to try a quarter of a pill I guess? Why do people have such varying reaction to the sedative effect of this drug?
