***** I was reacting to his comment: 'no leaders have seen the places he has'... my point was, if you want an example of a UN leader who has seen more of the good and bad in the world than probably anyone to walk this planet then Sergio Vieira de Mello is a good choice. I guess I just disliked how many people were talking down the UN, I'm a critic of it myself, but some truly amazing people have worked there. As much as I love Louis enjoyable, uplifting blogs let's not go over board.

Louis, you should really consider stop taking the Uber everywhere, it's not good. Why you may ask? 1. Uber’s happy smashing taxi unions. 2. Misogyny from the top. 3. It doesn’t seem to care about female passengers. 4. It knows where you are…(Thought your data was ‘de-personalized’, anonymized and aggregated? Nope!) 5. …and where you’ve been. 6. A metric obsession. (Depending on who you trust, Uber drivers can be sacked if their average rating falls below something like 4.6 out of 5 stars.) 7. It pretends it’s not actually a taxi firm at all. (Instead Uber insists upon calling itself a ‘marketplace’ in which drivers and passengers are simply matched up. In doing so, Uber side-steps the regulatory questions connected to licensed taxi firms, like in Helsinki, where Nordic operations manager Jo Bertram described Uber as offering a ‘different kind of service‘ to that of a taxi company.) 8. ‘Dynamic Pricing Model’. (AKA, Uber’s very own algorithmically-calculated price mechanism. Ride demand and driver supply combine to ensure the ‘correct’ ride price is figured out. Except no one outside of Uber knows exactly how the algorithm calculates such costs.) I wouldn't normally urge anyone to not use Uber, because I don't want to get in their face. But I do know you're a guy who care about human rights, people and sustainability. Uber is not good for that.

+Davisx3m uber is just a modern day taxi... taxi services need to keep up with the times. kind of like how youtube and netflix are replacing tv. they're more convenient. (also, can you please explain what you mean by they don't care about their female passengers? i've had nothing but positive experiences with uber.)
@katieanstruther6709 жыл бұрын
+Davisx3m I've used Uber, and I've heard snippets of the stuff you have cited before, but when I thought through every one of your points one-by-one, i realised how much I disagree with you. I don't know if I'm right on all of this, but this is just my experience. Here is what i think: 1) Competition for business isn't a bad thing, the only reason current taxi drivers have a problem with Uber is that it provides a better service than many of them have been providing for years. Complaining about that doesn't help anyone. 2 & 3) Sadly every company *still* has problems with sexism, even at the top. As a woman, the very fact I can always get an Uber if I need one, rather than having to stand around in the dark on my own waiting for a taxi to come past is massively reassuring. I'd say that is more important than a couple of bad apples at the top of a company. 4) & 5) Most companies use location data. Every time I use a map or post a photo I'm signalling my location. It doesn't really bother me. As if anyone would care where I got a taxi on any occasion. 6) Is it really so bad that drivers have to adhere to high standards? What you are really saying is that poor drivers should be ignored. I don't want an unreliable/rude/aggressive driver... is that really too much to ask? 7) Not sure I really care about that. If I can get a good, quick service from drivers who want to do the job they are doing, why does it matter? 8) What is wrong with having passengers pay more for a taxi when there is high demand in an area? To me it makes sense. Uber/Airbnb/BlahBlahCar (Louis should try that when in France & parts of Europe) are all examples of the sharing economy, something I think makes our world a better place. Trying to stop this progress which has blossomed out of technology helps no-one, and if I'm honest, I don't think it will work.
@FPOAK9 жыл бұрын
+Davisx3m A few questions on some of your points: Why is opposing taxi unions an inherently bad thing? Why should they be able to get laws passed that prevent them from competition? Consumers benefit from greater competition-not less. And to what extent do you extend this theory of job protection? For example, should laws have been passed banning the emerging automobile industry for the sake of protecting the horse-and-buggy manufacturers' union? If not, then where is the line? Why is government regulation the only valid form of regulation? When people get an Uber, they are able to see crowdsourced ratings and reviews on their driver. That's more than they can expect when they hail a taxi and know nothing about the taxi driver other than that he is licensed. If people feel that these reviews are a satisfactory enough form of regulation to feel safe using the service, why shouldn't they be able to make that decision for themselves? What's wrong with dynamic pricing? All they're doing is offering a price for a service. Anyone who thinks the price is too high is free to simply decline the offer. The benefit of dynamic pricing is that it helps clear driver shortages during high-usage periods by giving additional drivers incentives to go to the busy areas. The alternative to dynamic pricing wouldn't be just as many drivers at a lower price-it would be a shortage of drivers. Apparently customers are willing to pay more to get a ride when there aren't drivers available, otherwise the dynamic pricing model wouldn't be profitable.
