Jane Austen's novels are filled with military camps, soldiers, naval officers, and the like. She never mentions what they're doing and it can be a bit of a shock to realize that during her lifetime, wars in Europe were almost constant. As for the fashions, they were long-lived--modern-day equestrians still look like Regency dandies.

I feel like people who consider Jane Austen’s novels “gentile” or just romantic fluff often haven’t read them or at least not the full body of her work. There’s rape, seduction, poverty, and drug use in her novels as well as brief allusions to slavery in Mansfield Park. Yes, there are many privileged people in her novels, but she doesn’t totally ignore the harsh realities of life.

Billions going overseas and to illegal immigrants while U.S. citizens are left in the rubble. That s just the beginning. What's weird is that you and others don't open your eyes.
