I’m 72. I restarted Ballet 12 years ago after 32 years intermission. This past summer I took 6 ballet classes a week. Four of these were 1 and 1/2 hours long, often through heat waves of over 90 degrees with high humidity with no air conditioning. I ave had non Hodgkin lymphoma for the past 20 years and have chronic tendinitis!

So I danced when I was younger up to the age of 15. I went en pointe and was about to compete at YAGP. I eventually stopped dancing because the ballet environment I was in was so toxic not only mentally but physically too. I was told I'm not going to make it far because I was African American. I'm now almost 30 and recently got back into ballet 2 years ago and the studio I'm at is so accepting and welcoming dancers of all body shapes and sizes and experience levels.

Aww! This really helped me! I just started ballet at Nashville Ballet and was wondering about all of these misconceptions. I just turned 44 and I'm a plus-size girl and I've always wanted to dance. I hope this new journey will help me gain strength and confidence. I had no idea that I could actually go on pointe as an adult, so this is all news to me. Thanks so much for this video!

I know this is 3 years old, but I can't resist saying that I started at 47 and I was fluffy. 5 years later, I'm still going strong. I still have weight I'd like to lose, but I just finished a 4 week intensive of six hours a day 5 days a week, so I'm definitely in good shape--All the other students were young and thin, but I wanted the challenge so I did it!. (and earlier in the summer I did a one week intensive for adults only). Oh and I'm slowly taking on pointe too. Mostly I've had scheduling issues, but I plan to prioritize it this (school) year. I hope you're still dancing. Hugs!

We have free yoga at my work twice a week. Almost everyone that doesn't come says they "aren't flexible enough for yoga." DUH. Where do people get the idea that you have to already be flexible to take yoga or already flexible and pretzely to do ballet? It's like people get the idea that if you can't already do something, and like a professional at that, then you don't do it. This is insane thinking.

Excellent video! There's so many people who want to ask these questions but feel they're too silly. I am the lady with ms who cried at her first demi-plie, so even though I am not able to get to a class yet, I still have a go at warming up and flexibility exercises from you lovely ladies and the miriad of videos online. Watching this on a phone, there were two videos on top, and Abby underneath, and I was waiting for her to look upwards to the others, a la Brady Bunch! So interesting and amusing all in one! :D

This video answered so many of my questions! I am going to try my first ballet class next week, so I'm really glad I found your channel! The comments and hearing the stories of others are also very encouraging. Thank you!!!

Nobody would say someone is too old to do ballroom,so why say it about ballet? Its absurd. I started at 45. One thing about starting as an adult is you can decide for yourself what you want to get out of it.

Love this collaborative vlog! Really important to dispell myths and get more adults interested in this beautiful art form (not to mention a great nontraditional form of regular exercise)! I travel to Denver regularly for work and drop in at Colorado Ballet. I will definitely check out class at Broche on my next visit!

Thank you so much for the inspirational videos Ballerinas by Night! They really encourage me. I am 44, curvy, have never done ballet before, not flexible at all, dreaming of dancing gracefully en pointe someday. Do you think it's utopian?

Really encouraging. I’m an adult ballet student, and it’s been rough as I’ve had many issues being tight and inflexible from being 2 months premature. However, I keep pushing myself!

Love this. I’m a beginner. I’ve been taking 3 hours of dance class a week, 2 of which was ballet. I was blessed to have private classes for almost 2 months. However, because it was not meant to be private class it was canceled and I’ve been put in with the intermediate teen class. 😮. I’m holding my own, but man do I get a workout. Got to keep up with those teens. I’m 42 dancing with 15 year olds. 😮. Unfortunately, in my city I’m having a hard time finding adult ballet classes. Not that I mind dancing with the youngins. Lol. Great video. I’m so looking forward to the day I can buy my first set of points!!!! I’ve only been dancing since Mach of this year. But I dream regularly of doing a developpe on point. That’s my dream move. Lol.

How do you increase flexibility and strength as an adult I'm struggling
@TheTinFoilTiara

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Also, a good daily stretching routine and warming up before class is essential. Doing yoga/pilates on the side is helpful, as well as a little cardio training for stamina. I practice barre work a lot for strength and form.

I finally have to money to take an adult Ballet class. I am constantly watching videos , reading articles and books . But I have no idea what class to take . I cant find My adult Ballet intro or basics. It's very confusing . I don't even know all the terms and don't want to stand there not knowing about what to do . But I can't stop thinking about Ballet on daily basis. I have a friend who is in professional ballet and she does teach me when she can , but I don't want to constantly wait on her all the time. I want to take this seriously and work at it. Any advice?@Ballerinias at night

I would contact the studios you are looking into and ask them if they have beginning classes for adults, or if you can take a beginning class of any kind!

I've seen videos of professional dancers with severe bunions and they can go on pointe. I am 59 and would like to start ballet lessons but I have a bunion. Should that stop me from my dreams of dancing? I'm willing to put in all the hard work and gain strength and flexibility.
@BallerinasByNight

I hope that a bunion wouldn't stop you from being able to dance. Maybe check with a doctor before getting started, but I hope you are able to dance!
