I don’t bathe in my ‘chair, but I do sit in it naked when getting in or out of the shower. Dear parents: PLEASE keep that in mind when you think it’s OK to let your kid play in my ‘chair when I’m not using it! And yes I sleep in my ‘chair… mostly at church, when the sermon runs long. 😜

I’m having some health issues with my joints, but we had a family trip planned for New York City. This kzbin.infoUgkxuxJwamLFanm476LC5WPeTouyyU1GXomC was perfect! It’s lightweight enough that my friend could carry it up or down stairs when we needed to. (I can walk very short distances) It was comfortable for me to sit in, I would say if you’re super tall it might be a little cramped. I’m 5’1” and the foot rests were the perfect height. This may not be the best one for long term use, you get what you pay for, but for something that fits our budget that gives me accessibility while we deal with my health this was amazing.

My friend occasionally HAS to sleep in her chair, but NOT because she wants to. It is just when a PCA flakes and doesn't show up for work and help transfer her to her bed for the night. My friend cannot move herself out of her chair safely. It's brutal for her to sleep in her chair, yet she has no choice sometimes.

As a child of a wheelchair user I have been asked many of these misconceptions by random people (like in grocery stores) and kids at school when I was younger. Just a few that I think of off the top of my head... being told how amazing and special and brave my mom is (for going grocery shopping or things like that which to me.. an eight year old I was like why all the other kids and their moms go grocery shopping??), being asked if she drives the car in her wheelchair and/or suddenly has use of her legs to use the gas/break pedals, asked if she swims in the pool in her chair (lol), and people flailing around to open doors for her or insisting on helping her push her own chair (which excuse me personal bubble area please don’t touch them or their chair to “help” unless they ask or accept help). Probably plenty more but just made me think of some of the things I remember from growing up that people would do/say!

I will say that I genuinely didn't know until a couple years ago that people who were paralyzed could drive, but only because I didn't know that there was such a thing as hand controls - I had never heard of them, never saw anyone use them, so didn't know they existed. I also didn't know vehicles could get modifications that weren't installed in the manufacturing process. Now I know both, and seeing how different people use them to live life to the fullest just brings me such joy - adaptations have been developed to help those who need them.

I have never thought that a wheelchair user couldn't drive (probably because I knew a guy who did) or thought they slept or showered in their chair. As far as laundry/eating etc I know that some have great difficulty with it if they have limited core,hand or arm function. (thinking of Cole from roll with Cole and Charisma).

One thing that’s not a misconception: money changes everything. Most of those who don’t have it, have an entirely different experience from those who do. And being born disabled usually results in a different perspective then if you’re in an accident and have settlement money. You have more advantages afforded to you. It’s easier. Plain and simple.
@anneharrison1849
@anneharrison1849 3 жыл бұрын
Or where you live? In England, we don't have to worry about health insurance and we get an allowance just for meeting the costs of being disabled, which is not related to whether or not you have a job or what the rest of your income is. I would have to be a lot richer for it to make a difference (not settlement kind of money) and though I live a lot better than if I only had the basic social security, it wouldn't be disability related things that I would not spend money on.
@AlCleveland
@AlCleveland 3 жыл бұрын
I understand, and you are correct. I was fortunate enough to have a job and even with insurance, there was never enough money for adapting my home, and many other things. My power chair was billed at over $32,000. And that is in addition to the other things like vehicle modifications.

Thanks for the laugh. My dad was in a wheelchair from Polio at 11 yrs old. But back in 1932 they thought that people in wheelchairs were brain dead. I have a news paper clip on my Dad, with heading "Disabled boy at 14 gets essay award". Like there were astonished. People used to talk to my mum like Dad couldn't communicate. Dad would pop up and say, "you can ask me if you like?" I suppose if someone is not around someone in a wheelchair, they wouldn't know. I use to like driving my dads car with hand controls, as they acted like a cruise control in the 1970 Chrysler Valiant. Not sure if any cars had cruise control back then.

Hi Chelsie, thanks for a great and humorous video! I've been a wheelchair user all my life. Almost 60 years! One thing I would like to add is that many of us are fiercely independent because we have to be and in most cases we do not want or need help with anything. I would just like to say to the able bodied population don't just come up behind us and start pushing us because you think we need assistance. This is really annoying! You may ask us if we need help. If we decline your offer please respect that and go on about your business. In general, I do not want anyone doing anything for me that I can do myself. I can and have done many things that most able bodied people cannot do. I have a good friend who used to tell me that I have a lot of nerve calling myself disabled since I can do many things better than he can! This would not have happened if I would have had parents and friends always trying to do everything for me!

You did an excellent video, thank you. I remember a few years ago someone wanted to know who changed the hinges on the door to the expandable hinges. I told them I did, they were thinking that no way could a wheelchair user remove the door and re-install the door. I stretched out my arm to show them I could reach the screws on the upper hinge just fine. I also changed out a tall 30 gallon water heater sitting on an elevated shelf in its little closet. Last month was 10 years in a chair for me, I've learned a lot in that time. I can still do many things, I just have to do them a little differently.

Enjoyed your video! I am 66, Polio in 1958, wheelchair since 1995. My manual chair has same back as yours. That has prompted more comments, mostly from PT/OT’s. I am having to depend more on a power chair and I H A T E it. You could do a great comedy video watching me trying to adapt. Seriously, I would not trade a minute of my life in a chair. Yeah, it’s painful and a serious hindrance, but is my challenges that have brought me to this place. The journey is worth it. I love your humor and storytelling. Keeping it real!!! Oh, almost forgot, I do nap (getting older). Not a good idea. I fell over, on my back all tangled in chair on top and my head through the bedroom wall. My wife had been napping in her recliner next to me. Funny now, I’m keeping the hole in the wall. Reminds me not to take myself too seriously.

Great video. :) The driving issue is a little complicated. A lot depends on *why* you're in a wheelchair, and what kind of secondary diagnoses you have. I don't drive. I've got spina bifida and hydrocephalus. I have a startle reflex, no depth perception (as in, I only see in 2 dimensions) and problems with attention. I was told I had a 50/50 chance of being able to drive, but I decided not to, because I felt really uncomfortable during the driving tests, and I didn't want that 50/50 coin toss to go the wrong way and end up killing someone on the road. So there's nothing inherent about being in a wheelchair that would prevent one from being able to drive (given hand controls, obviously), but it's those secondary conditions that might make driving either a really bad idea or impossible.

I am a new lower leg amputee last year and i think i love you. Lol. You do have a great sense of humor though. Cannot do the grocery thing on my own because i live in Minneapolis, Minnesota and winter and snow here makes what you did with your groceries impossible. How did you get up those steps you set your groceries on?

One I get all the time is people who assume I can't talk... especially hosts/servers at restaurants. I have no idea how this one works lol
