Love your videos. Only done one passage from San Diego to Hilo in a Dutch motor sailer. Three weeks, with major issues. Mainsail and mizzen blew out. Repaired main. Generator crapped out. The gear box seized due to no oil. It was a brand new Yanmar unit but the Capt. didn’t check the oil. Thru hull fitting to the head crapped out, so no head for last two weeks. Fortunately we had power from the engine alternator. Wonderful memories. Thank you Barry. Wishing you fair winds and following seas. 🇬🇧🏁

Like you, I always help people in their time of need. I never expect anything in return for it. So it is always sweeter when someone reaches out and treats me to something after having helped them. I too am on my own in this world, but up until just recently. It's been all land loving for me. But I'm an old Navy salt and the sea is calling for me again. So now that I am in a position to buy another boat. I'm going to do so. Sailing to S.E. Alaska is my goal. I used to live there so I know what to expect. Hope someday to run into you and "I'll" buy you that much earned beer!

Hi Barry. You were very unlucky. I spent three seasons in the Ria's before sailing down to Lagos, and had a wonderful time with great sailing area, great weather, great [cheap] restaurants, cheap beer and great islands to explore, particularly Cies and Ons. We often had fog in the morning but it generally burned off early. Mind you, that was three years ago and the weather has been a bit weird this last couple of years.

The captain of the yellow boat is named Jean. He's Swiss and his lady is French. I met them in Lanzarote and they invited me on their boat, (cement BTW) for a Swiss fondue and plenty to drink. We are now friends and they are very kind and generous. I think the problem was that they don't speak English any better than you speak French.

I can see two problems with that boat and its use of ground tackle: 1) Not enough scope. Looked like MAYBE 3:1 was out -you can tell by the steep angle of the chain. Always put out at least 5:1. & 7:1 if you have space - more if bad weather develops and you plan to stay put. 2) That TINY CQR anchor! OMG - what were those idiots thinking? That looks like a 40' plus boat - heavy displacement, steel hull, etc. I wouldn't trust my dingy to that little hook. CQRs are notorious for being difficult to set, and for dragging. It is an old, outdated anchor design, and the small ones are worthless. That looked like a 25 ponder. I'd want at least a 75lb Rockna scoop style anchor or a Delta plow. at least those designs set reliably. The primary anchor on a cruising boat should look ridiculously large sitting on the bow. Twice as big as every other similar day-sailor's anchor is a good place to start. I've never seen a boat drag because it's anchor was too big, or because it had too much rode out... Those conditions were light. I didn't see any white caps, so it couldn't have been blowing more than 8 or 9 knots. If they keep cruising so carelessly with that anchor, they WILL lose their boat.
@verpauly

I had left an anchorage, with no bottom for an anchor to dig in, was about an hour out when this squall line hit out of NOWHERE. By the time it ended, we were nearly back to where we started. Only change to the anchorage was the two dozen boats were up against the mangroves. Nowhere was at fault

In that part of Spain, explosions (noise rockets) signal the village that has a special summer celebration that day, it's a way to let people know they can dance, drink and eat joyfully at that place during the evening. Sirens into the night mark that there is a close fishmarket and that a fishing vessel is coming to sale her prey. So fish buyers run to the market to buy it and store it for food markets and restaurants. In a way, they are romantic and misterious sounds, but fully functional.

Brian. It’s the type of and referred to as a certain shape of the anchor the yellow boat was using. It’s a useful all round anchor but relies on digging or ploughing into the ground. Just dropping it isn’t a guarantee you need to back up to dig it in, which really one should do with most anchors anyway - make sure they’re set before you turn in! 😴
