Kathy Bates has rightly gotten tons of praise & awards for her performance here, but James Caan did a fantastic job as well, especially in conveying the agonizing pain and suffering Paul is going through.

The scary part of this story is how believable it is. When you look at murderers who were obsessed with their victims, such as Selena's killer, who was president of her fan club, or people like the guy who murdered John Lennon, it is very eery. Cathy Bates is so great in this, scary and sympathetic at the same time.

King said that Annie Wilkes was his cocaine addiction that he was trying to kick off at the time he wrote the novel. You could say that drug addiction is in a way an abusive relationship but I really like your take on it, that it could be an allegory of living with an abuser and the film really could represent that. About Annie Wilkes, that was Cathy Bates portrayal the one time sweet then without warning switching to short tempered as in the book, Annie is from the start presented as an unhinged psycho. I think the cinematic portrayal is very layered and Kathy Bates did an incredible job that 100% deserved the Oscar for best actress. King wrote the book Dolores Clairborne with Bates in mind after seeing her performance in Misery. Dolores Clairborne is more a psychological drama while Misery is more a thriller, but she agreed to play in the cinematic adaptation and she also superb in it. A word on James Caan. Being bed or chair ridden for almost the whole movie, he had to act more with expressions but it was fantastic, he really pulled it off and gave also an Oscar worthy performance. Buster was not in the book, he was created for the movie but his banters with his wife were so entertaining that it's a shame there never was a movie of those two solving cases.

She was even scarier in the novel, if that is even possible. Because she was just so unpredictable, and when you feel you got her insanity figured out and tried to condescend to her, she would surprise you with an uncanny intelligence. And ironically in the novel he did produce what he consider his finest work while trapped by Annie Wilkes.

I'm 35 and still choke up a little bit when he has to burn up his book. It makes the moment with him burning Annie's book all the more satisfying. My dad showed me this movie when I was about 12 or 13 and it made me so nervous with her mood swings plus his injured body crawling around the house.

Sheriff Buster's (Richard Farnsworth) car is a 1972 Chevrolet Blazer [K-5]. Lost In Adaptation Fact: While there were many minor changes from the novel, there was one major change. In the novel, Annie (Kathy Bates) cuts off Paul's (James Caan) foot to prevent him from escaping. Screenwriter William Goldman had stated that the reason he decided to adapt the book to film was because of this gruesome scene, and the effect it would have on the audience. However, Rob Reiner and Andrew Scheinman's script revision changed the method of torture to Paul getting his ankles broken with a sledgehammer. Goldman was opposed to the change until viewing the film. Typewriter Enthusiast Fact: The typewriter that Annie (Kathy Bates) buys for Paul (James Caan) to use is a Royal Model 10 typewriter. The Royal 10 was one of the first successfully mass produced typewriters which would set the technical standard for most typewriters that would follow it. Produced between 1914 and 1934, Paul's model can be pinpointed to be from 1914 to 1923 due to the double paneled beveled glass located on both sides of the machine. Models from 1924 to 1934 had only single paneled beveled glass. The 10 model would see use well after the model was discontinued as Royal Typewriters subsidiary Rigal Rebuilt would completely refurbish and rebuild the machines after they reached the intended lifespan giving the model many more years of use well into the 1950's and 60's. Due to its mass sales and twenty year production the Royal 10 remains one of the attainable typewriters that can be picked up by collectors of the machines in the 21st Century.

@@clevelandcbi I think he is a horror writer at heart, but with the depth of his knowledge of psychology, he understands that horror doesn't always mean something occult or supernatural. Some of the most powerful horror comes from reality. I totally believe this movie is based on Stephen King's personal horrific nightmare, especially because he and his wife did experience a "super-fan" breaking into their home. And I honestly can't think of another writer who can create characters like he does. As a writer myself, I aspire to be able to create characters with just half the depth of his. What an incredible writer.

Great reaction, w incisive discussion - I like how Steph's eyes glaze over at the beginning, like she's kicked into survival mode once she realizes what they're making her watch - but then she lights up as she gets into it - plus Achara's Maria Callas opera reactions to the suspense lol - Siskel and Ebert had a great debate about this in "If We Picked the Oscars", where Ebert picked Bates for how she "turns on a dime" here, while Siskel picked Angelika Huston's multifaceted, also frightening turn in Grifters - two brilliant performances -

In the book, Annie cuts off Paul's leg to keep him from leaving but that was never going to get into this film so they came up with the idea for hobbling him instead. Somehow, it's actually way more graphic and painful then limb dismemberment.

When I was 12, I was hit by a truck while riding my bicycle. A church couple took me in and nursed my injuries. They kept telling me I was their "miracle child" and refused to let me leave the house. They weren't threatening or anything. Just ridiculously insistent on me staying. This was in the late 1990's. I escaped the next morning while they were asleep. When I see things like this movie, I wonder what would have happened if they were a violent couple. If you're wondering what happened afterward, I got home and got a severe beating from my mom with the aid of her ironing board. She didn't believe my story. Thanks for reading.

Season 1 of Castle Rock (a new show that just came out a couple years back) is Annie's prequel story. I believe Stephen King had a hand in writing it, too, at least in part. It's pretty well done. You can do a reaction to a season of Castle Rock without doing the whole series, as each season is a different story (though there are some crossover characters and such from the SK 'universe').

With the lovely Audrey Hepburn. Through a series of events in the prologue, a doll ends up in a blind woman’s basement apartment. It is stuffed with heroin and three crooks want it. What starts as a hustle gradually evolved into a nail biting battle of wits. There’s even a jump scare or two that will make your hearts burst out of your chests.

I like Stephen King but Misery was, literally, the first of his books that I couldn’t put down once I started it. It hooked me from the beginning. EDIT: And in the book version, Sheldon did fall in love with the new Misery book he was forced to write so, knowing what his plan would be, I think he did make a copy.

In the novel Paul got one of his foot chopped off by Annie instead of broken with a mallet, and had to spend the rest of his life as a cripple. I actually like the adaption's ending more: I mean traumatic flashbacks are in themselves hard to deal with, give this poor man a break and at least keep his body intact. Oh, and you're right about "sometime like this could happen in real life" because it did happen. Mark David Chapman, the crazed fan who killed John Lennon, was obsessed with *Stephen King* for a while before he turned to Lennon--meaning that King himself could've died to a psychotic fan like Lennon did.

The hobbling scene is honestly one of the most gruesome scenes in movie history. I can watch bloody zombie horror movies just fine but I always close my eyes when this scene comes up. This just feels too real. 😣

20:30 In the novel, Annie actually CUT OFF Paul's foot with an axe & cauterized the wound with a blow torch. The director thought that it was too gory & extreme to do, so they toned it down. Yeah...THIS was their idea of "toned down."
