I was in the audience for this show. My sister, her husband (living in Ottawa), and myself (living in Toronto at the time) were visiting NYC and lined up in the morning for the afternoon taping. We were the last ones (15, 16, and 17) to get in because of the 18 no-shows who were mailed tickets. We did not know who the musical guest was until the taping. The first guest was Pam Hiatt, an 8-months-pregnant Boise State University student at the time who had recently moved back in with her parents to save money had just won the Powerball jackpot of nearly $87.6 million.

The clerks 2 movie introduced me to this song a few years ago and fell in love with it. Still a fave here in 2024! ❤❤❤

I saw them last summer (2019) and they were great. It was at a local NY festival... Everclear and Matthew Sweet also played. It felt like I was in the mid-90s again! I love that they worked out that bit with Paul Shaffer at the end to put a stop to the Silly Little Love Songs melody, haha.

I haven’t seen this since it originally aired, and always wondered what the deal was with the trumpet at the end. Thanks for clearing it up for me. It’s funny, cause the incident pops into my head every few years, and my memory of it was much more dramatic than it played out.

I was watching that night also. I was recording it so my nephew could record over it for me. This song details so many different things on so many different levels. I'll never see Paul as an artist ever again after his douche bag move. Million thanks for posting.

Paul was mad at Daivd because CBS and the Late Show would have to pay A LOT of money to Paul McCartney to for the broadcast rights to his song. This is why Paul took David's trumpet away. I still thought it was a pretty rude thing to do on live tv! All the show had to do was send S.A.'s record company the bill.

Right I understood that part was borrowed from another song. I just found the whole incident weird- first that Soul Asylum added that part to the song and then with Paul coming over. Funny thing is now whenever I hear that part of Silly Love Songs I always think back to this incident. Anyway, thanks for putting this clip up.

I've been wondering that since I watched it the night it aired! Very weird moment.

I figured the ending was a set up but I thought Paul might be really upset that he took his own personal trumpet. Anyways, it makes sense that the song is about the misery and frustration of record companies and they are doing a skit about that theme at the end.
