Last Week Tonight team, if you’re reading these comments: having subtitles in multiple languages (Chinese for me) for this video would be IMMENSELY helpful. I would honestly sit my parents down and have them watch this, because this is exactly how they’ve been radicalized and mislead. The tragic irony in all this is that I can’t easily find anything in their native language that goes in-depth like this about the spread of misinformation in immigrant communities via private chat apps. Best I have in my arsenal is Chinese subtitles for The Social Dilemma. It’s such an uphill battle. Beyond the awesome greeting animations, subtitles in multiple languages would be an incredible gift to help with this issue.

Google who the article writer's name, is it just a random blogger or a professional.etc etc 2. Google any institution name cited in the article, is it real, or does it have anything to do with what is writen etc etc. 3. Look at if the site is reputable, someones personal blog, a real academic site, etc etc. These 3 dont seem like a big deal, but it gives someone a general understanding if an article is based of personal opinion or real research. I told my mom other things too, these are only some of them at the top of my head. Ps: u can also reverse search image of the writers profile picture if there are any, scammers tend to use stock image for their personal photo, using other peoples headshots.

No joke, I play FB and Whatsapp police every time I can. The amount of of crap share via those channels is infuriating. Every single day there’s a new pyramid scheme being promoted to Spanish speaker in the US. Every single day there a new “breaking news” narrated by a random person and forwarded via Whatsapp. I’ve been saying this and I won’t stop: those famous “caravans” in the border, get their information from those massive Whatsapp messages. Somebody sends a voicenote saying “this is the moment, the administration will let people in” and that’s how that amount of people get together!

There seems to be plants in these comment section. There is this Spanish one and then there is almost every nationality throughout. It’s almost like this is video is the misinformation and the people in the comment section are there to reiterate the dangerous talking points of censoring views that you don’t agree with. Calls to action and dangerous rhetoric that is directly causing harm is already illegal. You aren’t suggesting ways to save lives because that involves hearing people that are completely wrong and finding ways to convince them that they are wrong. You are suggesting outing them from the discourse and that only leads to darker and unpredictable outcomes.

Old people really don't have any ideas about misinformation on the internet or more specifically how rumours can be spread with these message apps. Coupled with the fact that it comes from people who is a friend or family. Sometimes I tried to my parents about this. My mom is kinda unsure about all of this whereas my dad won't move an inch. I was a university professor in South Korea for 9 years. Getting students to source their research was a real challenge. First, NAVER and Kakao were considered by many writers to be THE source. Second, Confucian culture inculcates the student to accept all knowledge transfer from a teacher to a student as FACT. Thus, students rarely questioned the opinions of their teachers or sources, as this information is considered truth.

He can’t just expect them to understand some thing that is foreign to them because of their culture. There are many valuable things we can learn from Confucian Culture. I found the transition from high school to university very rough when it came to the level of scrutiny with sourcing protocols and style formatting. Not that I believed everything I read or wasn't scrupulous for my age and knowledge, but how rigorous it was was rough. I imagine that night be a universal experience for many first year students, but I had not at all considered the factors you bring up specifically in a Korean context. I think here in Canada we might suffer from the culture of politeness at all costs in a way that's unique to us. The Canadian politeness stereotype is more a deep aversion to confrontation and uncomfortable truths in my opinion, and I wonder if your Canadian academic peers would say that's a factor in our learning curve. I can't believe the left is attacking private messaging now.... unbelievable... and you kids think this shit is "progressive"... Its a simple concept.. The left are globalist elitist authoritarians who believe their should be a one world gov and currency.. their goal is to expand the welfare and gov states to every person on the planet.. Growth and expansion of government and distribution.. that's it on the left.. there is no ideology, no platform.. the only goal is oppose the opposition, the left brings no ideas or progress to the table.. The right are conservatives that believe in the power of the individual and ones ability to capitalize on opportunity in a free market.. Less government, less federalization, more power and funding to local and smaller governments that can form to the communities that make them up.... Left is federalism and then globalism.. Right is capitalism and individual liberty with focus on merit and charity.. Not affirmative action and tax.. This is why young liberals are dismissed.. yal have never read a page of Plato's the Republic... Why should anyone trying to maintain one listen to a liberal brainwashed kid... taught by other liberal brainwashed kids who have never done anything with their lives but come back to high school and feel good about themselves teaching kids with comparable intelligences to themselves... So everybody, this is example of deth by 1000 cuts. John here, along with MSM...along with controlled opposition, such as Fox...all offerring these little stabs at why informaion needs to be censored if we can do it. A few more years of little 5 - 20 minute segments like this...from John, our other favorite comedians/commentators, etc (or now, formerly favorites...2020 being an eye opener for many of us regarding those we consider our "influeners")...and we'll all be ready to go along with our elected representatives when they tell us, "Oh, hey guys, AT&T, Verizon...they're now going to censor your SMS messages...just like KZbin and Twitter do...to ensure people aren't passing misformation among one another." Out of curiousity...if any of our politicians go "bad", and we find out, and want to tell each other so we can vote them out of office....how is that information going to be treated under such policies? Will those politcians have the power to classify whatever they want as "misinformation"? Will those politicians hold any power over our tech companies to consequently force them to censor/block it? So that basically, we have to call each other...and tell each other by voice...and verify the other party got the full message? Man, if we had go thru all those hoops just to pass objective facts (that rightfully harms a major public figure) to one another...what an inefficient means of having that truth spread. Bottom line is that we (sentient, intelligent being) have always...ALWAYS....honed in on the truth. (And by "truth", I'm referring to underlying objective metaphysical reality, not Jordon Peterson's skwered version, in case anyone tries to go there.) We figure it out over time by sharing what we've heard, what our imaginations have made out of what we've heard, and whatever logic filter our minds applied to that info before sharing it. We rarely get things right the first time...its only after repeated observation and experience...and discussion of those observations and thoughts with others...does the actual underlying reality start to become more and clear/consistent/predictable given our current understanding of it. Censoring ... is only hurting information exchange between us. You want an informed citizenry...don't censor anyything. Let us get it ALL out...and we'll sort out fact from fiction...OVER TIME. It may not be at whatever arbirtray pace you John Oliver have in mind...but that's not for you (or anyone) to put on anyone else in a Golden-Rule following society/people....as it's not appropriate for any of us to put on you.

The vaccine admittedly does nothing to stop infection or stop the spread. The only alleged benefit is that it "lessens the symptoms" if you catch it. Except even before the vax most people only had mild symptoms or were asymptomatic anyway so there is zero actual benefit nor any risk from unvaccinated people. There is however a tremendous risk, already over 14,500 dead and over 675,000 reports of negative reactions. (And the # is likely much higher since most ppl don't even know what VAERS is) Just because they aren't on your TV doesn't make them less dead! Yes I know it's self-reporting. Do you really believe 675,000 people all conspired to make fake vaccine reports? That would be some conspiracy theory! As far as those scary COVID numbers? Hospital administrators were CAUGHT ON CAMERA scheming to fabricate Covid numbers and SCARE the public. How can you trust the same people who FUNDED the creation of the virus at the Wuhan lab to begin with? WAKE UP! Seems like an awfully big risk to take to willfully inject something proven to be fatal just to potentially reduce symptoms for something you are unlikely to even get in the first place and unlikely to even have severe symptoms if you did esp. if you don't have comorbidity. How can you trust the same people who FUNDED the creation of the virus at the Wuhan lab to begin with? The claim that unvaccinated are overcrowding hospitals is a media trick. If you only got 1 shot not 2 they consider you unvaccinated. So people take 1 shot and get sick from it and go to the hospital then they say the hospital is overcrowded with non-vaxxed. Look at England and Israel, they don't have the fraudulent reporting and most of their serious patient are vaxxed not non-vaxxed! HBO is owned by WarnerMedia. They are notorious propagandists. It their job to putout the misinformation while labeling true information false! I personally went to Elmhurst hospital during the height of the pandemic and proved they are lying with video. I think it’s an extension of the culture shock. I noticed that a lot with taxidrivers that I know well. For the most part they only really associate in their own communities, they generally speak to people from their own culture at work when they aren’t driving, or when they are driving, they are either on the phone to their friends from the same culture, or on the phone to somebody back home. So literally everything they are hearing is from a friend of a friend of mine who sends them a video about something or whatever. I used to go to school with a South Korean chick who moved to Australia to improve her English, but she found the whole experience of a different culture and language so threatening that for comfort she only spoke to other Koreans in their own language, she only attended Korean church, and every day she would speak to her family in Korea on the phone for three hours. She was living in Australia but she had no idea what was actually going on in Australia unless she heard it from friends, Who are also experiencing the same thing as her. and that’s before you even broach the topic of the fact that what is being pumped out in English isn’t all that much better. So what hope do some of these people have. Ever wonder why so many immigrants don’t like immigrants? Because of this exact problem. Not being able to affectively communicate in a language that you need to leaves you blind and easy prey for manipulation. Look at the Cubans, all you have to do is say Castro Castro at them and they will get in line and do what you want out of pure Tara

This is an important episode. There's a ton of unregulated and un-checked misinformation in non-English, especially rampant throughout the 3rd world. I worry greatly for the future. i think that me and you likely know the same things, and I'm right there with you. I've already got my emergency plan for when this country collapses into itself, because its inevitable at this point. I'm only even watching this video right now because I noticed something strange about people's perception of the news, specifically around when George Floyd got murdered. A female high school acquaintance shared me a text message that she said a friend of a friend of her husbands got, that apparently said "this is antifa. we know who you are and we're coming for you" - she didn't question the authenticity for a second, while at the time , I wasn't even following any of this nonsense, and I looked at it for 2 seconds and I was like do you actually believe this is genuine? The only people that claimed to be antifa that I've seen video of seemed like a bunch of college aged SJW types, dressed in black. People have lost control of their faculties and gone to great lengths to jump to quick conclusions about the world around them, and they find the solution first, then start working backwards to the problem. It's insane.

Alex Jones will be remembered. John Oliver is just sad attempt at comedy and will not. 127 writers and still isn't funny. He should go home to his country and help his own people .if he is so concerned. Also look up u.s. , Havard school of medicine, u.n. studies on atrozene. Its not making frogs gay, its making them extinct. Just like the headlines in u.k. for over two year ,the gay bomb, they dosed male moths so they wouldn't procreate with females. It is beyond well documented. Completely legitimate. They find the same chemicals in soil and every fish caught fresh water in u.s.. even saltwater species along the coast. Just a few searches on government web, college and even new England journal of medicine list it and its effects. Theres an hour and half long documentary on P.B.S. from 2000 that is all about the effects of atrozene and it making male species gay, or in science words for idiots making a male synthetically overproduce female hormones so the male doesn't mate but acts like a female by trying to lay eggs...only to die. This is scientifically proven .
