When was this filmed? The lack of snow and the height of the sun at the Arctic Circle would suggest sometime in late October to mid-November. When this video was released the snow depth would be 5-6 times deeper, and the sun would be below the horizon all day. Cool video in two meanings :) You're getting nearer to your goal, -40°C. I have experienced that only once when I was a teenager in 1980s, but I have always lived in the southern third of Finland. What I remember it doesn't feel different in -30°C or -40°C, it just painful cold. Did you know that the "arctic circle" in that Santa Village tourist trap is fake? The actual arctic circle is about 2 km north from it and the runway of Rovaniemi airport crosses it. The Santa Village was built there because it's swamp on the real arctic circle nearby and that place has a solid ground. Close enough, anyway.
@MispronouncedAdventures9 ай бұрын
Getting closer! yes I’ve found that from -5 to -25 it feels the same and pretty much -25c below also doesn’t feel that much different. Just more painful on the breathing As for the Arctic circle line in Santa Village, I did yes! But I only learnt that last winter.

It is an IR thermometer, not a laser thermometer, the laser is just to help you aim it is not involved in measuring the temperature. It gets the temperature from the IR radiation that is it and if you point it at an n reflective material reads the reflected light and its temperature. It is really a 1-pixel thermal camera, if you use one with more pixels you can see your own body heat being reflected on metal and the temperature reading will be your body temperature. The more reflective a material is the worse it is at emitting IR itself Snow is quite reflective, it is diffuse not specular reflection like a mirror. So the cold temperature you get is in large part because of IR radiation from the cool sky and space above. It jumps around quite a bit at 16:20 because you change what you read the temperature off from the black of the metal to the reflective surface of the light fixtures, ice, and snow. What you get from the black metal of the car of -29℃ is quite accurate, if it was not recently used the metal there should get quite close to air temperature. Better IR thermometers have settings for the reflectiveness of a material, Try pointing the thermometer up in the sky a clear night and check what is read then. It should be very low, space emits IR at 4 Kelvin. You will get a higher temperature because the sky does emit some IR back. The listed minimum temperature of most consumer IR at the moment is -50℃ so the result of the little IR the snow emits and what is reflected from the sky likely give a temperature that is not correct for either. Measure in a black surface that is not reflective in IR. If you measure on metal a common trick is to use a bit of electric tape. To measure outdoor temperature put a piece of black paper out there, it will quickly reach the ambient air temperature and you can measure its temperature
@MispronouncedAdventures9 ай бұрын
Thank you for the detailed reply, I did know it laser doesn’t do any measurements. I picked this model because of the laser for aiming and how it shows up on video. a 1 pixel thermal camera is a good way of putting it. ( as I have two thermal cameras with me as well ) as I have seen with them you get reflections when using them depending on the surface material . That now makes a lot of sense in my head how the reading works. Thank you

Did you have issues with Ad Blue freezing at -11 C and you had -37 C outside?
@MispronouncedAdventures9 ай бұрын
Not really, it’s was certainly frozen, but it doesn’t affect the running of the vehicle/engine, either the vehicle doesn’t know it’s frozen or because the vehicle temperature sensor says it’s below -11 it doesn’t use it / feed it into the exhaust. Not 24/7 but depends on what I’m doing. if im not driving and in the van it’s generally on. My heater has a frost mode. So if the internal temperature drops to 3c it will turn on and heat the van till 8c When I’m driving I turn it off as the cabin heater with the bulkhead door open will heat the whole van. if I’m out and it’s -15c or so I’ll probably leave it off.
