@@MispronouncedAdventures I have enjoyed all seasons. And in a couple of week the family sets out on our annual road trip, this year from Harstad in Norway, via Abisko and Kiruna to luleå in Sweden, to let the runt enjoy the water park. We ususally go in the summer so it's nice to see it all in Winter. Last year we did a round trip up to North cape as my wife had never been, and then to Finland via Kautokeinao and on to Northern Sweden..

I might need to Invest in a winch so I can do it properly next winter
@tcs7678
@tcs7678 5 ай бұрын
@@MispronouncedAdventuresIndeed, your next 4x4 camper should have a winch and two descent recovery points with D-shackles in the front and the back. Use a synthetic rope for the winch, a kinetic strap, a winch extension line, a tree saver, a couple of soft shackles and a snatch block. Not only will you be able to help others but when travelling alone, you can take a bit more risk because you know that you will be able to get yourself unstuck. For water crossings it’s imperative to have breathers for differentials and gear boxes that are high enough to avoid water being sucked in. A snorkel with a cyclone head is also very useful. Make sure you have a waterproof one. Some people have issues with the extra noise a snorkel makes. You can make the connection between the snorkel and the airbox in such a way that you can bypass the snorkel if the conditions don’t require a snorkel. That will solve the noise problem. Also make sure that the snorkel/cyclone can handle the required air volume of the engine. Some snorkels are choking the engine at higher revs. I am really looking forward to your next build. I am sure you will find sponsors for most of the equipment you need. Do you have an opinion on the use of diesel additives and their possible positive impact on diesel heaters in campers?
@dmwi1549

Good question on the fuel additives running through a diesel heater. I’ve never heard anyone discuss this.
@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures 5 ай бұрын
@@dmwi1549 i’ve mentioned fuel additives before I only run premium diesel in the van in the UK and whilst my diesel heater has 5000 run hours on it now it’s always been clean as a whistle inside, I also haven’t seen any issues running the winter grade diesel either. But it’s hard to quantify if that’s due to the diesel additives keeping it clean or just the heater is well set up.

@@MispronouncedAdventures great point, standard tow points from the manufacturers generally aren’t rated for towing / pulling at all and only are for securing the vehicle to a truck for transport. 2:09 it's not a smart charge alternator, it would have 3 wires going to it. Personally, at the mileage the van has done, i'd of fitted a new alternator with a bigger output and would have the 2 battery set up under the drivers seat. Felt your pain though at trying to solve your problem.
@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures 5 ай бұрын
It is a smart alternator as it’s 2018 Euro6 van. ( and goes into brake reg when DCDC charges are not on ) It’s a 220A alternator so plenty capacity for the current DCDC requirements. The reason I didn’t go for a new alternator as in the Nordic it was just short of £1000. in the UK it would’ve been about £350
@WOFFY-qc9te
@WOFFY-qc9te 5 ай бұрын
@@MispronouncedAdventures Fitting a 24 volt truck alternator means you can run two batteries in series, one only for the engine starter and the other for your existing setup. With a couple of heavy duty switches and a diode you can link systems. This way you will always have power to start the engine. This arrangements I have used on marine setups and works well. Also bin the freewheel pulley it is not needed it was just something the manufactures put in to show a slight improvement in performance figure. Best

It was nice to see that you got finally the technical problems fixed. I was thinking about your goal to experience -40°C and maybe you should come to the Nordics next winter again to reach it. I have noticed that the coldest places in Finland are often Pokka village in Kittilä municipality and Naruska village in Salla municipality. They both have weather observation stations and are the places that usually break the coldness records every winter. Both of them are quite rural places.

Normally for the -40 I look at forecasted areas for cold and then head there it’s not really ideal to hang around in one area the entire trip hoping for it. But both of those names in Finland are on my list.

I’ve driven many of the vans and prefer the transit I find the most comfortable. The transits are also extremely wide inside compared to a sprinter as I did not taper higher up. I don’t feel practically the ducato body offer that much more space. Most people said does because it’s wider higher up as it doesn’t taper. But I’m 6’2 so I sleep lengthways anyway, width ways was never going to be possible.

Good question. The Webasto heater coolant pump is for cycling the main coolant loop of the engine when the vehicle is turned off (engines water pump is turned off ) The coolant pump which is broken is the coolant pump for the EGR or Adblue system going into the exhaust somewhere. They only give me about 30minutes of usable light, but were absolutely brilliant when working under the old car. Just stick them anywhere to get some light, and being small they weren't in my way, either. Of course, your Transit has a bit more ground clearance and a slightly wider stance, so there's more room to work underneath. Overfull tank and needing to remove a liter or two?
