Hokusai painted Death, then erased it in an effort to escape, ultimately dying at age 90. The courtesan's spirit trying to escape the confines of the brothel. The painting of hell quieted by inclusion of the buddha. Buddha crushing the fervid people under his stride. Freeing the sparrows through charity. A little blind girl's (postrate in the snow, then pops up laughing) fear of going to hell for burdening her nosophobic (afraid of sickness) father, to instead become his flower offering, a star in the sky, and an enchanting work of art. Episodic impressions providing no plot, but I feel the message was to cast off fear and misery, comfort and be comforted, and take in all the beauty this short time allows.

This film mat not have been historically accurate but the way the paintings come to life, the music and the voice acting were just fantastic. I love this film but the ending was very abrupt and I wish we saw more of Oei making her own paintings.

Maybe the movie would've made more sense if I actually knew any of her paintings. I just left the movie feeling like "why did I watch this, what was the point." Wish they had added a little more plot since they aren't working off of solid historical fact anyways.
