I would point out that the Shrek backstory does not, in fact, come completely out of nowhere. Everyone tends to forget this, but the franchise is actually loosely (very, very loosely) based on a book by William Steig - which begins with Shrek's parents kicking him out. So that detail was probably added to the musical as a nod to the original source material.
@msamyrose1006 жыл бұрын
Psycopathicus I will also add that Shrek's past has being talked about in the franchise e.g. When he talks about how much of a shitty dad he had with Arthur in the third movie (sure it's not great, but it does feel genuine!)

Unless I"m mistaken didn't William Steig also draft the movie? Could have sworn he had some involvement. Either way, I think the movie worked better without the backstory. Allowed it to come out in snips and pieces naturally over the course of the franchise. Just felt more organic and real than if it was all dumped on us in the opening. And yes, I read the book. I don’t think Shrek the Musical fundamentally understands what made the movie work. The movie was a parody of Disney films, with pop songs, pop culture references, and adult jokes. It came out at the right place at the right time. The musical plays it way too straight and tries to be like a Disney musical instead of lampooning one like the movie did.

This play could have worked if Shrek was played as 100% the straight man and never sang like he was in the movie. What made Shek a fun character was despite not being particularly funny, the way he reacted to everything and everyone was funny. He was an ordinary man in an extraordinary world. That’s what made him relatable. This play would have been fun if he kept being confused as to why everyone kept bursting in a song when talking normally would be quicker and easier. Maybe even take a jab at Dinsey plays like the movie did with fairy tales.

How much would this musical be improved if we had a pop/rock band of fairy tale characters performing most of the songs? Also, Farquaad could get a musical number or two because Duloc is based on Disney so he'd probably love giving musical numbers.
@eatatjoe3 жыл бұрын
This musical is just - a whole lot of why. Not only is the franchise that spawned it coming out with a fifth movie, but by this point the entire spite-filled reason the franchise exists is completely destroyed by putting traditional musical numbers here. Not only that, but, like, I totally agree with the whole "Oh, God, they're singing, Marge! why aren't they killing each other?!" kind of self-referential humor got old after even Disney tried to do it with Frozen.
@jacobbelow41367 жыл бұрын
I do have to admit that while I was into Shrek at the time everyone else was, I cannot look back on it very kindly. Much of that has to with with: A) The original was born out of Jeffery Katzenbenburg's spite toward Michael Eisner and was set to tear down Disney's corportation to steal their success (yes, that in turn in why non-fairy tale characters like Pinocchio and Peter Pan appear in it.) B) The movie's had a bad influence on animated feautres in years to come, that would try to pull the "pop-culture/lowest common denominator shtick", AND it was a contributor to film executives thinking that 2D animation is dead. and C) There are several other fairytale-spoof style sources of entertainment that I find much more enjoyable, not to mention timeless. ('Into the Woods', anyone?) Yeah, with this franchise long overstaying its welcome as a fifth film is in the making, and fewer people looking back kindly on it as time passes on, this franchise and everything it spawned just irritates me- although, I do have to agree on some of the effects and songs (namely Fiona's).

I still enjoy the movie and think of it fondly, in fact I do with all the films in the series, even though I do admit that the third one was a bit of a stumble. To me, saying that "the references are dated" is not an automatic disqualifier. After all, using that to its extreme, one can say that you can't enjoy the world of Alien because the initial 1979 version of the future and usage of VHS-quality video is horribly outdated now, or that Escape From New York can't be enjoyed because it's vision of 1997 didn't come to pass. But I definitely agree that Shrek did become a curse in the fact that many inferior products blatantly pandering to crass and juvenile humor came out of the woodwork. Because of that legacy, it is the main reason for Shrek getting a lot of undeserved blowback, while the latter Disney Renaissance films got a very well-deserved critical reappraisal. After all, I always knew Treasure Planet was a great film that deserved to be considered a masterpiece, and it's a shame it was profoundly rejected initially. And yes, it is clear to see that a lot of the jokes, clever as many of them are, are indeed born out of vitriol towards Michael Eisner, as well as John Lasseter, because Katzenberg never forgave either for reworking his ideas for Toy Story or for doing A Bug's Life instead of Antz. But of course, there is the fact that Eisner was a creative wunderkind, but a horrible administrator, who could've easily led to Disney's being considered completely irrelevant. I'm glad that Disney is synonymous with quality again, and I've even grown quite comfortable and excited with the remakes direction. And yet, with all of this, I can still enjoy Shrek and the sequel films just as uproariously as I did when I was young.

"The Madness of King Scar" and "Shadowland" expanded both Scar's role and Nala's in the story, and "Endless Night" and the scene where Timon almost dies in a waterfall show that Simba hasn't 100% gotten over his father's death. I was assigned to the sound equipment, and had no to listen to and accidentally memorize all the songs in the Junior Version, so I was forced to get used to the strange soundtrack. The actors in the version I worked on somehow did a bit of adlibbing and portrayed the characters to make them likable and were AMAZING CHOICES for their roles! It’s amazing how a junior high with a budget of only $5,000 and nearly-broken sound, mic, and light systems managed to make the characters more likable than a broadway version.

To be fair, the original Duloc song had a version mentioning beheading. There was a Halloween segment where they go to Duloc and Shrek plays the song, which includes the lines "We will chop off your head and then laugh when you're dead". I can't believe I remember that, but whatever. Of course, after it plays, Shrek says "Let's do that again" and Donkey doesn't want to. Funny, when I watched the first movie (I got a free VHS at a giveaway. I think a crucial moment that I'm not sure if it was in the musical but I dont think you guys pointed out was when Fionna overhears Shrek the first night they camp. In the movie, Shrek tells Donkey that he's secluded himself to the swamp because the villagers saw him as just an ogre and don't give him a chance. The fact that he's an ogre leads people to believe that that's all that's to him. And of course, Fiona listens in on him and realizes that they have a lot more in common than she thought. He's been ridiculed for his appearance and I'm sure Fiona's parents and anyone else that managed to see weren't too thrilled when they saw Fiona's ogre form, especially considering how they reacted in the second movie, and was secluded like Shrek was because of it. It makes so much more sense for them to bond over that and maybe have Fiona's backstory only at the beginning instead of Shreks being the focus and hers in the background at the beginning and then have Fiona and Shrek bond over their abandonment issues and that they're both gross. The original is deeper and more personal and it was nice to see Fiona start to act kinder to Shrek and get to know him better and the audience knows that Shrek really isn't that bad of person anyway, he just feels like he's supposed to be alone and when he has what he thought he wanted, he's sad and upset cause he finally had the chance to talk with someone as an equal and have friends and people he cares about and that's gone, same with fiona when she's getting ready for Farquad's wedding. It would make more sense to have something to stand in for the montage that was in the movie like maybe have half the stage for the inside of Shrek's house and half Farquad's castle with fiona and have them ponder while they're in separate places until donkey comes along to see Shrek. Or maybe even have a short duet with them while they're in separate places lamenting on what happened and explaining each viewpoint better. It's more necessary than having the fairytale characters come back.
@hunterolaughlin Жыл бұрын
I actually like seeing the fairy tale characters come back and confronting Farquaad for his abuse and discrimination towards them. I also like they come to the conclusion that they don’t need Shrek to solve their problem and can stand up for themselves. It’s honestly better than just sitting on their butts back in Shrek’s swamp or just being submissive to the abusive of the ruler of their former home. Like someone put it best in a reply to a similar comment I made on Schaffrillas’ “Shrek the Musical Is Hot Garbage”: “I’d rather die STANDING then die KNEELING!”

Should we do a review of the Cats movie so people can say how bad it is and doesn’t make sense because it doesn’t have a plot? BMC didn’t even last on Broadway. Hamilton has a pro shot, so they should be doing a DVD. Of the shows you listed this would be better than half of them. Spongebob has a pro shot so should be available on DVD at some point, what it doesn’t have is any really memorable songs. It was pretty blah compared to Shrek the musical.

I costumed this show in 2015 for a local high school. I honestly should've had an assistant because this was some WORK, to the extent that I couldn't finish all of it in time and the three pigs wound up looking terrible. The stupid dragon head was made from flimsy particle board and I had to remake the skeleton with pvc piping, as well as attach curtains so you couldn't see the handler's feet and Shrek wound up being allergic to his makeup. Sigh. That all aside, I did have fun with it at least. I gave Fiona's three ages three different dresses in three different shades of green, each deeper and richer than the last. I even managed to find three red wigs and a final form dress exactly the same emerald shade she wore in the film. But yeah, this isn't a great show and while I had fun with it, I acknowledge it's got issues. 😅

Wait what the fuck do you mean it doesn't include All Star? That should have counted for 10 sins already. It's not Shrek without All Star dammit

While I agree with some of your points you seem to ignore any good points in the show which is rather frustrating especially when there is many good performances in the show

Shrek the musical is a guilty pleasure of mine. There’s a lot of talent and work that went into it and some of the songs slap. The actors are also giving it their absolute all and it shows

I think that the main character being annoyed by people singing but give them a character arc this doesn't have that because he sings yet still annoyed by other characters singing

What's wrong with Hänsel & Gretel?
@MissNightmareReviews5 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with them, it's more the musical tried playing them off as wanting to get lost and the fairytale characters trying to prevent the children from wandering off.

Has Sutton Foster been in anything else?

Yup. She was recently the Baker's Wife in the Hollywood Bowl's take of Into the Woods and is set to be in the 2020 revival of The Music Man.

I honestly still love the movie, which I think has picked up a backlash through the lens of the endless ripoffs and cash-ins it in no way can be held accountable for. Also, great crossover! ^^

There’s no reason a Shrek-based musical couldn’t work, but Shrek has a major handicap that the Disney musicals don’t have: it’s not based on a movie musical in the first place.

I mean Humpty Dumpty isn’t that much better than a Tweedle. He isn’t a fairy tale character either, he’s from an English nursery rhyme.

I remember when I was younger and visiting my grandma, we were gonna go see sheck the musical in her local theater that Night, and the guy who was playing donkey just happened to go to my grandma’s church, and so mid service they did this thing where they were praising him for playing the holy beast of burden in this local theater production .

Not all stories sing and Shrek certainly isn't one of them. Although there are good moments and Sutton Foster is divine and the other cast members give it their all, but there's so much padding and the musical robs Shrek of its simplicity by giving him a tragic backstory in the same manner that Ron Howard did to the Grinch in the 2000 movie.

I absolutely love this musical XD Yeah, it's silly, but it's fun, and the songs are amazing, and the singers pull them off incredibly! I do wish the full-bodied dragon puppet was used in the movie version, though. Its song and appearance was so much cooler, especially when it flies :3

Diva mentions the 'trying to talk as the character over sings' as a mention to 'Build a Wall', but we mostly just skipped that song. But I did use a couple clips of the filmed version in the Verdict/Final Thoughts part.
