Reminds me of this anime I vaguely heard about. Young school kid get the ability to shoot fire, telepathy, laser eyes, etc. And nobody gives a shit. Being able to throw fireballs won't help you get a job at Japanese McDonalds.

I agree that Asa Butterfield's character was subdued, but it was consistently subdued throughout the movie. This makes me think that underplaying the character of "Jake" was due to direction not (Asa Butterfield's) choice.I did like the movie and felt the 3D was well done. However I have read the book, so that might be why my opinion is favorable.

I loved this movie, though this is one of those movies that loose their magic from then on. I rewatched it and its long not as fun as the first time around. Also and here I give a spoiler warning, I cant get over those freaking gaping plotholes. At one point in the movie the whole loop thing goes into overdrive and suddenly theirs closes and they end up in the Future, 20 Minutes later another one closes and our Hero has to stay in that time, 5 minutes later he is using the loops to permanently time travel. WTF?

1st half was good, 2nd half not so much. In fact it got satirical. I think what happened might've been Burton was told the script needed lighter moments halfway through and Burton took that and went overboard with the 2nd half.

I felt the opposite. I felt the first half kinda dragged with all the world-building and exposition they were dumping. Sam Jackson pumped a lot of comedic hammy energy into this that carried this movie from a Rental to a Matinee for me.

The only thing from the 1st half that i thought was waste of time and coulda been done much quicker was the grandad, grandson relationship. Sam was funny but his character motivation was illogical, unsubstantiated, and most of all belied the very concept of the loop itself. When many decent actors in a film are behaving "off", they were probably directed that way. As for this film being like X-Men, it's REALLY like X-men. The comics DO have weird mutants who serve no real purpose, like a guy covered in eyeballs and a little girl who looks like an old woman. Ever since Grant Morrison wrote the book in 2000, it's been very Tim Burton-esue.
