Cinema is cinema and theatre is theatre. If a film of this story is done, and done exceptionally well, given that the story itself is quite short when you read the script, it would not take away from those who enjoy theatre and all that the cast and crew put into such a production. I mean, just looking at the title and knowing when and where the story takes place anyone knows how it ends. But the work and the art, be it stage or screen is what draws people. I do, however, think that another reason a film of this story won't take away from its theatrical runs is that in the play, one can feel what the characters are feeling and sense the overall tragedy of this love story. In a live performance one feels empathy for scenes such as when, 3 years after Saigon falls, Kim is in Bangkok, Chris goes there even though he has moved on and married Ellen and poor Kim, upon hearing Chris is in town "joyfully puts on her wedding dress" from that night in Saigon seemingly so long ago. She goes to find him, ready to resume their lives together, elated that he indeed "came back for her" -- only to face Ellen, his wife, opening the door of Room 317. That totally had to crush her spirit. She was all of 18 or 19 now and a firm believer in the love they shared and professed to one another that steamy, humid night back in Saigon at the end of April 1975. Yeah a windy reply but now everyone catches my drift.

I just saw the 25th Anniversary performance in the cinema and I'd say it's as good as a movie. Sure, it's still the stage version, but the singing is insanely good, all the performances are movie worthy and the recording is really well made. Definitely worth getting the DVD.

Christopher Mueller I explain: for me musicals it's a play the same like others performances. If I offended you, I'm sorry. In my culture all form of plays are called a play. But I thank you for pointing out my linguistic mistake. Appreciate that. Thanks :)
@Salamon2
@Salamon2 9 жыл бұрын
Christopher Mueller Not to be rude, but a musical is a specific genre of "play". Also, a play is not limited to works of realism (it can include surrealist, absurdist, naturalist, futurist, heightened realism, etc. artistic forms as well--not to mention the classical forms of comedy, tragedy and tragi-comedy which most certainly aren't part of "realism" as the 19th Century conceived of it). In the end it is a catch-all word for any type of "theatrical performance that is performed live on a stage or for broadcast" over a radio ("radio play") or television ("screenplay")--to use the Oxford Dictionary's definition for it. The word musical is in fact a shortened word of the phrase "musical play" which was the name for it at the genre's conception. Eventually over the last century we dropped the word "play" from the label, but that doesn't change the fact that a musical is in fact a "play" as it remains a "theatrical performance that is performed live on a stage". In short there was nothing wrong with the way +Lynn Ross was using the word.

I love how they made Thuy more likeable in this revival. I have watched the 2000 version here on KZbin and the Thuy there (which was played by Sir Robert Seña) was more of a scary commissar who was possessive of Kim. He even attempted to sexually harass Kim; thankfully the Engineer went in, thus his intentions disrupted. On one hand, the one in this 25th anniversary version (Hong Kwangho) showed that his marriage with Kim was more than just an arrangement that their fathers set up; I can definitely say he loved her since they were young. The way the actor expressed his lines/lyrics made Thuy a pitiful loyal man who's ready to accept Kim again despite she being wed to Chris. When Thuy commanded his soildiers to kill Kim and the Engineer, he showed guilt when one of his soldiers slapped her which made him stop them. Man, I love his reaction in that scene!

There's quite a bit of lyp-synching to a recorded click track on a lot of long-running shows like Phantom, Wicked, Sound of Music, etc... Many shows do. In fact "The Commitments" has made apoint of stating that there is no miming in their show.

@RichardArsenault
@RichardArsenault 9 жыл бұрын
SimsFreeplayJunkie Well, if they do, I have a few constructive suggestions: 1) Don't cover with multi-cam stedicam. Use traditional "live" camera coverage on set and matte out the other cameras using CGI. The stedicam in Les Mis was good for maybe 1 shot in the entire film -- not (what seemed to be) every other musical number. -- Stedicam is a hand held camera on a device to make it more stable. Hand held is a technique where the camera is not on a tripod or supporting device like a dolly or crane. -- Multi-cam is when numerous cameras run at once. During a live musical number, they can be spread to all portions of a stage as they would be in a live sit-com. In features this is discouraged because the lighting is compromised and the cameras will catch each other in the shot. But today we can matte out the other cameras and re-light in post production so those limitations are no longer valid. 2) Don't use auto-tune. Ever -- autotune is when the singer's voice is artificially kept in tune and makes them sound like a robot to the listener whether they know it or not. The human ear is very sensitive. 3) Get a director who is not afraid to stand up to our beloved Cameron, Claude, or Allan. This is film, not stage. 4) Cast Broadway level performers, not film stars. Period. 5) No new songs for film. That's all I can come up with over my first cup of coffee.

*FWIW:* Lea Salonga and Will Chase are the definitive 'Kim' and 'Chris' for me. They did it together on Broadway toward the end of its run in the late 1990s and again in a 2000 revival in Manila, Philippines, that was taped for posterity. Lea was fabulous as always, but I was blown away by Will! Prior to his interpretation, I didn't care much for the character of 'Chris,' one way or another. I know he has his haters, but I understood that he and 'Kim' were victims of fate; neither was at fault for how things turned out. It's just that I never saw a 'Chris' that excited me... until Will Chase! Hubba! Hubba! 😍What a blonde, sexy, angelic hunk! For the first time, I realized why 'Kim' would be so hung up on him for years. 😂 Also, he was totally believable as an American GI. The physique. The demeanor. Everything. I have two brothers who are ex-military, and he reminded me of some of their friends. With previous 'Chrises,' I felt that I was merely watching actors in army costumes, which I was, but Will totally sold it! Plus, he had a way of being aggressive without coming off threatening. Too many times (especially nowadays) I feel that 'Chris' is often portrayed as if he has anger management issues. 'Kim' would NOT be attracted to that. The fact that Chris is both strong AND gentle is what appeals to 'Kim.' Lastly, Lea and Will's chemistry was just out of this world! They were so convincing as lovers, I thought they MUST be hooking up backstage, until I read that both were involved with other people at the time. Nevertheless, their makeout sessions felt authentic, and you could almost see the love in their eyes. Wonderful pairing!

This was so fun to do, even if we had several nights in our production where the fence nearly fell down in the helicopter scene. (the one where all the soldiers are leaving Vietnam) because all the lower school kids were pushing too hard on it!
