Getting tired of random indie game #500 that has PlayStation 1 graphics, and no option for texture filtering. The fad wore out its welcome, and now only gets sales from a small base of fans. Just like rogue likes. Which BTW COULD appeal to a larger audience simply by allowing texture filtering, but devs invested in perpetuating this dying fad always choose the fad over appealing to a wider audience. Plus texture filtering modes like lanczos are a thing, that exist. I have a few games from the list already, but valkie seems the most appealing new one. I always get a kick out of the horrible graphics game trope using unreal engine or unity, which makes the game completely unplayable on low end hardware, and these games are one of the biggest reasons why I'm done buying them, but ultimately it's the lack of choice. Not having the option to choose settings, which hurts nobody to include, but loses my sale for not including. Maybe some day devs will realize PC gamers like having options, because PC isn't a console.

The only game I can think of that is criminally missing from this list is Cavern of Dreams, a wonderful blend of what feels like Banjo-Kazooie and Earthbound. I have no idea how you can make a game weave through joy and comfort to legitimate fear and unease so flawlessly My only other recommendation is The Spirit and the Mouse, which has modern graphics but has old Collectathon vibes going on

There's also XF Extreme Formula by the same developer as Spark the Electric Jester. It's another in development antigrav racer akin to F Zero but the boost is tied to the engine's oxygen intake instead of the energy/health of the ship.

Corn Kidz 64 was honestly a fantastic delight for me. It was one a those games that felt like... it was made in the 90's, based on some Canadian French cartoon that aired back in the day. The art direction and the character interactions feel so well defined, especially with Seve and Alexis, to the point they feel like characters you definitely remember from somewhere. Pair that with the kinda humor in the game, the brain-massaging (and royalty free) music, the incredibly in-depth moveset and mechanics, and the kind of challenges and minigames you have to try out, and you get something that literally feels like it released 25 years ago, with its relatively short amount of unique levels as the only noticeable sign of a more modern design, and even then. Ex Zodiac... I should play that one again with an actual controller. Oh, but Super Kiwi 64, I've been saving that one for when I actually have time to bite into it, after all my college work for the time at least. It feels right up my alley, cute style and big levels with stuff to collect after some platforming trickery, what's not to love? Same thing with Pseudoregalia, actually... that one gets the added bonus of being a Metroidvania as well! Kinda surprised you didn't mention Cavern of Dreams, another ultimate favorite of mine. Ditching combat and health systems for a platforming-puzzle approach, the game feels like an absolute dream, both figuratively and literally. From mysterious areas to comfy and cozy, sun-basked landscapes, sights of wonder, and the occasional (and later on, plunging) dips into the more nightmarish material. The dragon you play as, Flynn, starts with an already surprisingly in-depth moveset as he stumbles into the titular cavern to rescue all of his siblings, still within their eggs, with even more moves to unlock as you progress, as well as items you can use in the area to change how Flynn moves around, or that you can use to interact with the environment in multiple ways. There are even times where the worlds you visit ooze into each other in a way that reminds me of Banjo Tooie but without the cumbersomeness. Alongside some really cute, cool and almost mystical character interactions and even a bit of background lore, a pretty sweet 100% completion reward, and even a few secrets that the game doesn't even acknowledge but are still there for you to find should you be savvy enough to get to them, this is definitely one of my favorites.

Just want to chime in that while Corn Kidz 64 looks great, sounds great, and feels great, I thought the gameplay was pretty bad. There are very few checkpoints but lots of troublesome areas where missing a jump makes you fall all the way down to the start of a gauntlet. On its own that would be manageable, but this is the kind of game where you can't trust your character to land where you think they will land, so it all winds up feeling bad. :/ Cavern of Dreams is my recommendation! That game had much of what I love about N64 games and I had a great time playing it!

Sure you won't find them in stores on cartridges but you'll be able to find them each for a pretty low price on online stores. Of all these games, corn kids and super kiwi actually look decent - the former captures the feeling of American programmers completely unfamiliar with this SGI workstation CPU and fighting with a texture cache smaller than the NES' video memory to make the best game they could make despite being housed on cartridges more expensive than the console itself, while Super Kiwi looks like the typical cashgrab game that only sold to clueless grand/parents buying gifts for their grand/children. The other games on the other hand are very obviously modern games with intentionally bad graphics that somehow have higher system requirements than Crysis, that Jet Force Gemini game in particular hit me like a shovel. The racing game looks "western racing game" fast that doesn't really convey speed as impressively as F Zero GX and we have yet another boomer shooter, cue that scene from Toy Story 2 with the shelf full of Buzz Lightyears.
