Witness the crowning of Miss Universe 1988 Porntip Nakhirunkanok of Thailand. Miss Universe 1988, the 37th Miss Universe pageant, was held on 24 May 1988 at the Lin Kou Stadium in Taipei, Taiwan. Crowned by Cecilia Bolocco of Chile. 66 contestants competed in this year. For the first time ever, the 4 of the 5 finalists were from Asia with contestants from Hong Kong, Korea, Japan and Thailand. Miss Mexico was the only contestant from South America to enter the top 5 ranking!

Porntip/Bui was so smart to enter the Miss Thailand pageant instead of Miss USA as she was living and studying in California at the time. She knew her best chance was to win the Miss Universe crown was to complete in Miss Thailand as a fluent speaker of Thai and English. From what I know, she was a great Miss Universe and did lots of good things for Thai children and Thai commerce. She is a wife and mother and is still involved in philanthropy using the name Bui Simon.

miss porntip nakhirunkanok is so famous among the beauty-queen wannabes (especially gays) in the philippines she's the 1st asian woman crowned miss universe in the 80s era many filipino gay beauty pageant enthusiasts had considered her as one of the best miss universe winners i think porntip grew up & studied psychology in the USA, that's why her command of english language is excellent btw, she's one of the judges in the miss universe 2018 edition

I was so torn this year. For me, of all the years, this had to be one of the toughest decisions. Porntip is so elegant and had everything. My heart was pulling for Korea, she was so sweet. I mean honestly when it came down to both, I really didn't know which way they'd go, but I had a feeling it was going to be Porntip, she had outscored Korea in each event, but still to date, Miss Korea is my favorite contestant to have entered a pageant. Oh and by the way it's 33 years later and they still both look gorgeous, timeless elegance.
