Thank you RETRO CHANNEL for this amazing post. I had no idea how amazing these pageants were back in those days. They used to be pretty simple yet they were so wonderfully conducted! Even the ladies were so naturally beautiful unlike the ones these days, who go through a series of operations and changes to make themselves look picture perfect.

Israel Jamaica and Philippines were really prettiest. Evangeline said in her interviews she was asks to take the duties but not offered the title that's why she declined. However, technically this year was memorable to Philippines pageantry bagging the 2 major pageant title Miss Universe courtesy by Margarita Moran.

The judges made a very bad decision. Philippines is the deserving winner. The result reflected when Ms USA was dethroned which reflects that the crown was really not meant for her after all

Miss Africa South, even if it was not a real country, was a pretty 17yr old. A lot of winners of MU and MW were often under 21 before the plastic lot came along.

In July 1973 - Miss Philippines wins Miss Universe and Miss USA 1st Runner Up. In November 1973 - Miss USA wins Miss World and Philippines 1st Runner Up .... 🤔 Guess the International Pageant Associations of the 70's weren't ready for either one of these countries to hold 2 of the most coveted international titles in the same year. It's my first time watching this 1973 Miss World Pageant and I felt that Philippines 🇵🇭 was going to win, yet I was pleasantly thrilled the USA 🇺🇸 won. And in reverse order that year, I felt Miss USA should've won Miss Universe and Miss Philippines 1st Runner Up. Though it's rare to see to 2 countries simultaneously be the Top 2 candidates at International Pageants in the same year.

The year before , Australian beauties Belinda Green won Miss World 72 and Kerry Ann Wells was Miss Universe 72. So yeah, pageant orgs were ready for winners from the same country. If we go back further, France won both MW and MU in 1953

Not nearly as exciting or well done as Miss America, Miss Universe and Miss USA. By the 70’s even they were done with better standard and quality. So tacky to be crowned while in a bathing suit even in 1973!!They should be crowned while in evening gowns. So behind it’s like Miss America was a bathing suit contest then they made it more classy and beautiful. Here this pageant started in 1950 and after nearly 25 years it’s still a bathing suit-swimsuit model contest!! They must have changed that up because they crowned the last Miss World in Puerto Rico in March 2022. So Miss World is around same age as Miss Universe & Miss USA pageants.

They started crowning her in her evening gown a few years later. Cindy Breakspeare was crowned in 1976 in a gown.

Yes I noticed that finally I believe it was Miss World of 1975 who was the first to be crowned in evening gown. By 2014 Miss World eliminated swimsuit completely and Miss America did after 2017 also. Miss Universe and Miss USA still have swimsuit competition however. I’ve been watching these pageants online in order of year and am up to 1979 now. Thanks for your reply. Take care now . From🇨🇦

@@waynehentley4332 Well I haven’t seen a lot of these older pageants in decades I started watching them on TV every year as a teenager. But they don’t show them anymore after. So watching them again is like opening up a time capsule for me . I always loved the pageants each year. But I certainly enjoy them. I’m in late 50’s so it’s been a long time since I first watched these on TV!!lol😄😊

In terms of Miss World history, it's interesting that up to the early 1970s the swim-suited semi-finalists were required to turn their backs on the judges and stand perfectly still so that their rear views could be evaluated!

Marjorie Wallace was eventually dethroned...good for her...LOL...technically, it is Evangeline Pascual assumed the title, crown and throne...but the Morleys were not yet ready to hand in to the orientals, the top plum...obviously, Evangeline was a standout...she is but the rightful title-holder as MISS WORLD 1973!

It wasn’t boring for us at the time. We loved these shows. They got controversial in the 70s. People rebelled to parading them in bathing suits . And those commentators were sarcastic towards the women, belittled them. But we watched faithfully every year.
