looks like it's been carved out of coal or slate possibly by a miner which could explain why it doesn't go all the way to the bottom

I agree if its in your hand or a deal is done, the item is taken. One of the rudest things I've seen at a carboot was from a seller. They'd agreed with Richard a price on an item and he'd put it down to get his money out to pay, another guy picks it up and asks about it so Richard says he's just agreed on it and the guy respects that & put its down. The seller than asks him what he'd pay for it and if he could outdo Richard's price then its his!! Baddddd etiquette!! But the other guy had manners and said he wouldn't buy it after a deal had been done 👌🏻 correct response imo.
