I especially love the deep blue/purple? Colour at 6:46. And I completely agree, Minecraft is especially lacking colours in the blue/purple/cyan range. I have protanopia (a form of colourblindness), which means my red light receptors don't work at all. This results in all the red, yellow, green, orange, brown, and lime type colours looking like one primary colour, and all the blue, pink, purple, etc like another. For me Minecraft doesn't look like a colourful game, because the majority of textures fall under one primary colour for me. A few things I've noted in getting around Minecraft's restricted palette: Blocks behind semi-transparent blocks, especially glass blocks, can greatly increase the palette artificially, although this is only useful for flat surfaces where the glass block can be fully recessed. Light level blocks (or lack thereof) can adjust the shading of a block (this might seem obvious, but it's something that other people I've talked to haven't considered.) Dithering and hue adjusting the source image greatly improves palette conversion. I'm working on a way to best automate this process using imagemagick atm

I think when looking for opportunities to add the mentioned vibrant colors we could keep in mind the potential of light sources. Ever since the addition of the glow squid and the glow item-frame, there has been a potential for blocks to carry some of that luminescent quality. Frog lights start to do this with their tinted white colors, but it could be cool to see a more saturated variant of that idea. In terms of where to add more unique muted colors, it would be cool to see these blocks as tiles / terracotta-like blocks built into ancient structures (following Minecraft’s shift in providing story telling opportunities through structures you have find). These blocks would have an intrinsic reason for their difference because they’ve been either submerged / decaying in the earth. When thinking on what might be on the other side of the portal in the ancient city, I think it does make sense for the dimension to have little pockets of a “light oasis’s” in the same way the Nether has the warped forest biome to contrast the abundance of reds and oranges around. These light oasis’s provide the opportunity for really strange and new pallets to emerge: imagine a dimension mostly dark and moody like the the current deep dark punctured with spots of luminous iridescence. If the idea of an oasis is a bit unoriginal, there could be something that’s the exact opposite: just how in the deep ocean there are creatures with bioluminescence to attract their prey, in this new dimension, really bright, bold, beautiful colors might actually indicative of something terrifying. I’d love to see what Minecraft’s take would be on a hostile mob that’s a functionally like an angler fish. Anyway - this video was throughly enjoyable and thought provoking. I hope Mojang comes across it to see the community’s thoughts are on filling out the colorspace of the game. For a sandbox game, I think this conversation is really critical for the long term viability of the game, so hopefully future updates can keep this in mind to allow people to fully express the creativity and allow for a legitimate reason to keep expanding the Minecraft inventory of building blocks.
@samuelnoble5478 Жыл бұрын
really really useful way to visualize this! The spectrum of colors available in minecraft already is really cohesive, but builders are constantly struggling for colors and textures that all mesh and match up while still providing gradients/contrast/whatever. Sometimes those limits can lead to really cool and creative projects and techniques, but I do wonder if we're due for something like a "World of Color 2.0" update that just gives us more variants in color and texture on a lot of the more popular families of blocks? Things like glow lichen and other semitransparent blocks also obviously open up even more possibilities when it comes to mixing color and texture together, so maybe an update focused on more overlay, trim, or detailing items makes more sense? Being able to add on a semitransparent layer of black cracks or bright gold trim (for example) to ANY block would mean you can get even more fine tuned tones. I'm really curious to see what Mojang's long term solutions are here!

Some of those really deep, dark colors could be added via gemstones, something along the lines of lapis where you mine the ore block and get gems that are items, but you can craft 9x of them into a block. So like Opal, Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald, etc. That would be a good way to make mining/caving a bit more relevant again, while also getting some of those more intense jewel-tone colors into the game. That "pistachio green" block you showed off looked extremely similar in color to the inside of an avocado to me, so maybe they could add that fruit as a block like pumpkin and melon. The default avocado would have a dark green, heavily textured appearance and you could skin in the way you can logs, and it would then be that creamy light green color. To farm them you have to pit the avocado which turns it from a block to a food item a la melon slices. I guess that would require adding avocado trees, too, but that just gives them an excuse to add a new type of wood to use as well, so that's all upside.

They could make it so that you have to go to specific biomes to find specific gemstones. Similar to how emeralds are only found in "extreme hills" biomes. That would encourage you to travel across your world more. And to make it so that it doesn't get annoying, wandering traders would have chance to offer the gemstones of the biome that the trader spawned in. For example, pearls would only be found in oceans and up to 10 blocks or so below the water. Jade would spawn in the different types of jungle biome. And so on.

So, a few ideas on how to implement those new colors you showed us, that I came up with: 1. for the green tones they could add a „compressed [leaf type] leaf block“ for every kind of leaves, wich are non-translucent and have a denser leaf texture to them. 2. for that pastel orange you could craft sand and red sand, like you do with gravel and sand for concrete, to create a „mixed sand“ block plus stairs, sandstone, walls etc. 3. for additional color variety and textures maybe making a „condensed [coral type] coral“ block which doesn‘t die without water could be cool. 4. what you had as an idea: a new underwater biome/POI/feature would be a great addition.

"Packed" foliage, leaves, grass, bushes, would be a great way to get those yellows and greens in. The blues, teals and cyans would definitely be easiest to add in underwater structures, though some of them could also easily be added in ice biome expansions. Maybe some hybrid water temple for an ice ocean? Some new terrain generation in the snowy tundra or ice spikes biome, maybe. Adding some if not all of the purples to the Nether would help a lot with that, too. Surprised that pale orange color doesn't already exist among the existing terracottas, given it's proximity to actual pottery-related stuff. You could probably get the pink on the end of your bar with a berry dye of some sort, which could also cover some of the missing purples, but that magenta is so flippantly unnatural a color that I think that one in particular might be hopeless.

In fact, most (if not all) of them look like they would come from the warped forest, so maybe that's where that mob would spawn. I'd like to imagine these blocks being built by some sort of termite looking insect to make a nest, the player could then harvest the blocks of the colour they want and somehow grow more of them, from there, they would either be turned into a building block set, or crafted into dyes. That's just a random idea though, it probably needs lots of refining before it's actually a good feature. Great video by the way! i would love to see more purples and pinks of all shades in the end. Perhaps found in some temple out there with strange plants to gain as a renewable source. Or for a that deep dark portal thing, perhaps a new world of sickly and muted colours, a place where the dark wasn’t as all encompassing, but rather a constant fading or draining.

I know i saw someone mention altering blocks with stained glass and also shading with light blocks, which are a few really fun tricks to use, but you can actually just go and blend your own colors entirely with stained glass! You can use it to get gradients that look as smooth as banners. I've messed around with it for a while, and stained glass can really just make almost any color you could want. It's just not always the most practical.

i feel like the easy fix would be to let concrete, wool, and terracotta be dyed like leather and its more about getting the right hexcode than the right average texture

Some of those subtler blues could be slate or some new types of stone maybe

These colours looks so cool! I think that those greens would be something like nature related maybe with the wood and the purples are just screaming end. If they added something with these colours I would be really happy.

I wonder how the texture changes over the years would change this. Like gravel, haybales, potato’s, etc.

I feel like Minecraft could use some more bright colors. Personally that bright pink/magenta you showed looks really nice in my opinion. I feel like a cool way to not only add bright colors but also more light blocks would be to add some sort of bioluminescent plants. Maybe mushrooms of some sort, maybe a new plant entirely. It could be added to a new biome, new dimension, or even something you can find using the Sniffer.

6:40 Now imagine they would add more coloured terracotta like blocks that would be available in the new ruins. That could technically make the archeology even better - especially if aside the building they would also maybe add them in chests. Or ancient paint, with ingredients/recipe for them lost in time.

I found this really informative, nice visualisations. I have wanted minecraft to have a 32 dye pallet to expand from the current 16.

I kinda want a painted copper block or some sort of colorable metal block that has stairs and slabs, that would be really useful i think

Yeah Minecraft really needs a "Color Update!" type update. Something I have mentioned a number of times is that I suggested a glowing mushroom to add to deep caves. Hear me out. Basically a slightly glowing blue/green mushroom. And/or possibly a white glowing mushroom that you can dye with dyes to change the color. Then you could grow the mushroom giant and use it's blocks to have different colored lighting sources. Since right now in the game there isn't much to pick from for different colored blocks that produce light. I already know Mojang has stated in the past they will never add different colored light, but at least give us the ability to have different colored light blocks for building with. With that though is the fact we still don't have a paint ability. I have seen mods that do it which look cool but I don't like messing with mods since they tend to be a hassle it seems like. But being able to paint ANY block in the game to a different color thus having multiple different textures but fitting your color pallet would be amazing. But I am guessing it would be to much work to implement that into the base game maybe. Plus if you wanted to mix colors to change them or some stuff that would add a whole another added complexity but if that was possible you could get the really out there colors represented in this video. If they could pull that off though I am pretty sure so many builders would flock back to the base game to be able to build whatever they want with the specific colors without having to worry about it looking all funky.

Minecraft dungeons has some beautiful colors of the end and I hope they'd take inspiration from the color theory they use in that game.

6:02 I'll be adding all of my personal suggestions on what blocks could have these colors. Probably not gonna be read by anyone, but it's fun anyway! 1, 2 & 3- These all could be Purpur Block variants with infused Chorus Fruit which could also give them some very subtle particles. Or they could also be some sort of giant Chorus Fruit, just to add on some variety of what you can harvest from the end islands. 4- What if we added more types of geodes? Or rather, naturally occuring gem formations. Rubellite clusters would be really cool, maybe you could tint glass with it to make it sparkly. 5- Maybe some sort of End-Mycelium? It could add lore to Minecraft, given that Mycelium controls the mooshrooms. It'd be really cool if there was something similar to grass in the End. 6- Hmmm i'll finish this sometime later, i got stuff to do rn lol

I do hope that we will get all the more colours - especially with wood-like blocks. I don't think we should necessarily get those as like overworld unnatural woods, like some mods do. But it would be nice to have them in other places. I mean - End easily could fit shulker like blocks - even the usual growths in the End could have been updated to work like bamboo. End itself could get more biomes. We could expand Nether - maybe with more gray and black tones for the bazalt areas. More white with bones carved by Piglins. We could also utilise Deep Dark for some mushroom growths that could also add black and blues. Not to mention Deep Dark dimension would be a great idea in general, for even bigger hard mode experience, with rare wood blocks being available there. And back to overworld - I would definitely love more smooth gradient options, especially when it comes to lighter wood. And even better solution - they could also easily just add paint tool. Imagine painting oak wood in all possible colours, but also maybe expanding the colour palette, where you could mix available paints to get slightly different shades of that wood.

You're a godsend for this, it's great to have all this visualized. I like to think I'm pretty good with colors in general but it's hard to compare them all in minecraft without meticulously going one by one just because of how the menus organize them all.

Adding biomes with ground or vegetation texture with these blocks would be awesome, I could totally imagine dry biome or pinkish biome in the end with all sorts of plants to grow, also perhaps some structures with the new blocks, and I a gree the cold blue tones are neat
@ViolettaVie Жыл бұрын
Or they could over hall the dye system by allowing us to combine dyes to make specific color like how we can dye leather. And when we come up with these dyes, we can use them for concrete and terracotta and wool to fill in the gaps we are missing. Maybe even allow us to dye wood planks and stripped wood, or even various stone blocks. And like terracotta, these blocks would have a base color that you add to, so it wouldn't be pure, red or blue or yellow, but something else to give more variety.

Thinking of something OP in terms of building, like adding a new block that uses a LOT of dyes in it's crafting recipes and being able to be any color, like how leather armor can be dyed

The forest green colour would be great for an “evergreen” tree type to be added. When it comes to “realism” for Minecraft, I try to remember they can always more “Minecrafty” things that don’t need to make sense in our world. This new tree could have a green wood, or at least be green when stripped. For the blue transitional blocks, they could add an “Oasis” mini biome found in the middle of deserts 🏜️ and have a bunch of new blue blocks

I had an idea for the glass colour, maybe Mojang could add something like foggy glass to get the equivalent glass colours but solid

The really bright colors could easily happen in a ocean biome, we already have the corals so maybe something like a coral brick/coral mush or something that's basically just the solid bright color with a few textures Coming from Terraria, the muted blue and dark green remind me a lot of Dungeon related colors, so an overhaul of that abandoned idea of a feature would be great We are also getting those archeological sites so maybe some new colored blocks could come from those as well
