I survived Army Basic at Ft, MacLellan in 1977, not much different. The Army taught me to appreciate the Coast Guard. Retired 21 years total service.

Lots of folks will never know just how much training this scene took. The M-1 is 9 pounds of heavy weight and to do this in precision takes a lot of work. Brings back memories of my drill team time. Love the M-1 ...my favorite weapon!

May 1967, Great Lakes Naval Training Center, still cold as hell at 5 AM and me standing in line with the other 90 guys in my boot camp company waiting for breakfast. Five other companies were on the parade grounds. Most of the guys were sent to Vietnam. I was sent to Beeville Texas. The NAVY treated me better than my family ever did.

My wife and I saw this in a theater in Italy after I joined the air force without asking her input. True story. Even she laughed her ass off at the movie. She divorced me years later after she found someone better-looking and dumber than me. Oh well.

One of my roommates during AIT is in the background in one of the graduating companies. You can see him clearly three or four times. I remember him showing us, and he became an instant hero to the rest of us. He got plenty of free beer at the EM Club that evening…

I'm an Army veteran who graduated basic at Fort Leonard Wood, MO back in 1990...I was always pissed that our graduation was held indoors instead of the marching on the parade ground like we were supposed to do.
Stripes is the most realistic movie about basic training EVER. This is my word. And as such is beyond contestation.

I was at Fort Benning in 1966. Same style of building then. To me THIS WAS FUNNY. If you have not been in the Army you DON'T understand this movie. I have been at a lot of Army Forts back when. Then they all looked the same. Still a great FUNNY movie today in 2021.

Yeah I could fill three pages everything wrong in the Basic Training segment. But still funny as hell. The one thing right was the constant training with the DI in your face to distract you. Also the 2200 lights out because of 0500 wake up. But we were getting up at 0300 just to get the barracks ready for daily inspection, which of course we failed about every 3 days. I still wished they'd done a CS chamber scene, that would have been hilarious.

I'm not sure where the guys came from for the parade scene but a couple platoons were out of step.The first few guys would be in time with the drums but the last half would be on their right instead of the left.
