That was a great promo. A shame that many here know the Paul Bearer character but not the Percy Pringle persona. I encourage you all to watch more Pringle promos and matches and Google him for a read-up, he was a great character. That's why WWE hired him to play Bearer!

These men would really hurt themselves for a promo. This and that Roddy Piper promo where he breaks the beer bottle over his head just shows insane levels of commitment to entertaining the masses. And of course to succeed.

@@kevincampbell5785 for personal reasons, Percy becoming Paul Bearer wasn't as big a change because I was such a fan of his work in WCCW. I was really happy to see Pringle get the role that he did with the biggest company.

Dewey Robertson was a great athlete in the 60's. When wrestling became more of a 'gimmick' to help get over in the 80's, he opt to go that route. Paint his face, shave his head unusual and go by the Missing Link. I first saw the Missing Link here in Dallas home of World Class Championship Wrestling. I believe Skandar Akbar was his manager. What else can you say about Percy Pringle? He paid his dues in the business working multiple promotions of the National Wrestling Alliance until going to WWF and becoming Paul Bearer....hell of a career!

For those who don't know, the Missing Link's gimmick stems from the old carnival sideshow days (from which pro-wrestling originally came from) - check out "geek show" on Wikipedia for more info as it is quite fascinating. Those "geeks" would pretend to be both primitive and mad for the audience's benefit, even biting the heads off chickens. People like Carny Bart and Sideshow Bob in the Simpsons come from this, as does Meep in 'American Horror Story: Freak Show'.

I encountered the missing link downtown Newark N.J. 1984/85 "I was having lunch in Miltary Park one afternoon, when a woman walked by with a man on a dog leash, i instantly recognized him by his gate/walk and face obviously, she's walking him like you'd walk your dog, I called his name "missing link" he turned to look.. never breaking stride , but he turned to look, and the woman snatched at his chain as if to say "don't pay him any attention" he never said a word, but i knew it was definitely him.

To draw money. Sometimes a character bottoms out and you have to re create yourself AKA Kevin Sullivan, Rick flair. (Flair stole his gimmick from Buddy Rodgers). Some come right out the gate with a gimmick and it works like The Sheik, George Steel, Abdullah the butcher and etc. If you're not drawing money, you will be phased out or become a jobber.
