I'm in the middle of restoring an old Waldown drill press and the knob/hand wheel for securing the handles was missing. It's quite an iconic looking knob so I decided to make one.
This section of footage didn't seem to work within the restoration video so I made it's own video.

Neil, a hint for the paintjob on small metal items like this : stick it in the oven between paint coats, it makes a finish almost as durable as the powder coating.

@@PaskMakes I was wondering why you didn't try to anodize it. Then I realized that the lettering is just epoxy, so it would have had to been painted anyway. It does look good, though. I think it should last well enough, since you sanded the part and also used etching primer. But, I guess if it doesn't last, you could always try something else.

Really great result and a clever way of doing the lettering! 👍 I have used silicone casting mould material for similar jobs. Youmcast the silicone around the original piece, then when cured, cut it open (or partially open) and remove the original and you have a mould. Then you can cast epoxy resin, even epoxy and chopped glass fibre mixed if you need more strength. You can also add a metal threaded insert first and cast around it to make a strong knob, just fill the threads with something removable like modelling clay or candle wax. You can also mix black pigment in or other colours and the colour ismall the way through thenpart, in case of later sanding or shaping. If you want to try this in the future I suggest getting the harder of the silicones, I think mine is a shore 60, and the platinum-cure silicone is more expensive but much tougher and better quality than the cheap tin-cure silicone.

Brilliant job. If you want to do some really small powder coating, here is what I do : put your aluminum workpiece in a small oven (a toaster oven is ideal ). The first reason is to de-gas the aluminum (or something like) that for any PCing. If you don't, the powder may bubble later during the final baking. The second reason to heat the aluminum in a DIY shop is that you can avoid buying the whole PC equipment purchase. I use a hobby air brush to apply the PC. Get the workpiece up to about 350 F or so, remove from the oven, and then use the airbrush to apply the PC. When the PC hits the hot workpiece, it will slightly melt into place. I found that I'd have to keep slightly shaking my airbrush as I did this. ( Don't fill the airbrush container any more than about 1/3rd full ). Or, instead of using an airbrush, search for "fluid bed" powder coating and make one yourself. I made a small one for my girlfriend and it worked great. You will need an air compressor and a regulator that is accurate down around 5 PSI because you need to keep the air pressure extremely low. Once you have your workpiece coated, put it back into the over to bake. Depending on the powder, the workpiece will have to be baked for 5-10 minutes at around 375 F. Since it's not likely to see an overly abusive environment, I wouldn't be overly fussy.

To powdercoat a few small items at a time without tools, you can use the shake & bake method. You'll need a plastic container with lid (#5 plastic) and airsoft BBs. Add a handful of the BBs to container along with a spoonful of powdercoat powder and the item. Shake vigorously in all directions for a few min. The plastic generates the static to make the powder cling. Remove carefully and bake @ 400F for 15-20min. You want to go long enough to ensure the part reaches 400. Your knob might be on the upper limit (size wise) of this method but you can always repeat a second time if needed. Thanks for sharing your work.

Re: powder coating. Definitely a neat thing go have. Powder is quite a bit thicker than paint, so surface finish on parts does not have to be as good to still look nice. I would highly recommend getting a plastic (or all wood) table and doing all of the work on it, otherwise the powder would just as happily go to the ground as it would the part. Keep the work area cleaned, and you can just sweep up the 'overspray' and re-use that powder as well. As for the process itself, i prefer to preheat the part whenever possible. Bring it up to 200c and that will not only burn off any oils and such, but also allow the powder to melt on contact for a better coverage. Powdercoating process is sort of unique in a sense that layer thickness controls itself because powder gets more attracted to places where it is thinner. You can still get a run, but it is not quite as easy as paint. With that said, if smaller aluminium parts are going to be the focus, anodizing is better. You get more vibrant and even colors and the setup itself it much simpler. You have to deal with fairly strong chemicals, but it's not bad and worst case you can just build a fume hood with a clear splash shield.

Hey if the paint doesn't hold up a lot cheap option compared to power coat is to go with Aluminum Black solution, it works just like Cold Bluing does but it's for Aluminum of course LOL. You can get a bottle fairly cheap and it works quite well as long as the parts been prepped right. 👍👍

Cheap powder coat setup is well worth the price. I have an Eastwood dual voltage here in the states but it's just a badged import. Pickup a cheap toaster oven for curing small parts in. Finish lasts longer and is done in an hour instead of waiting days for paint to be set up.

Powder coating is fun! You wouldnt believe the things you find around the shop to use it on. I would get one if I were you. I got this cheap one here in the States from Eastwood that does a good job and is only 150 with a basic kit few powders and plugs. I am in the planning stages on modding it to make it coat more evenly and focused like a professional gun but that's just me wanting to fool around with it. Its great for what it is. Great job on the restore!

Ooooh, nice. Never seen that trick with JB Weld before, that's really cool. You might already know this, but you can actually do a lost-material casting method where a 3D-printed part is used instead of foam. You can even use a printed part to make a reusable silicone mold for epoxy or foam pieces that you need duplicates of. It's pretty neat. Just in case you find the unthinkable: a situation JB Weld can't solve...

The aluminum knob is very nice. I don't have the machining equipment to produce that knob in metal, but I have made similar knobs in hard urethane by casting with metal thread inserts cast into the knob. This would be especially easy if you have an existing part to create a mold from.
