The Titanic tourist submersible is still missing after being reported overdue Sunday. The U.S. Coast Guard says the search for OceanGate Titan has now covered 10,000 square miles and the passengers are running out of oxygen.
Dr. Salvatore R. Mercogliano, an adjunct professor at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, says the lack of heat at the depths of the Titanic wreckage could play as big of a factor as the lack of oxygen.
The submersible was bringing its passengers to see the wreckage of the Titanic, about 12,500 below sea level, when it went missing some 435 miles south of St. John's, Newfoundland.

That boy is 19 years old. He is essentially an adult. Everyone who got aboard would have understood exactly what kind of dangers they were putting themselves into. However, the CEO of OceanGate should be held 100% responsible for his obvious lack of regard for the safety of those inside his creation. Titan is simply not built to a degree of sufficiency for a dive like this, and the CEO was perfectly aware: "the Passenger Vessel Safety Act of 1993 needlessly prioritized passenger safety over commercial innovation."

10 possible reasons what happened to the OceanGate submersible: 1. **Mechanical failure.** This is the most likely cause of the submersible's disappearance. The submersible is a complex piece of machinery, and there is always the possibility of a mechanical failure. This could have been caused by a faulty component, a manufacturing defect, or even operator error. 2. **Collision with debris.** The area where the submersible was operating is known to be littered with debris from the Titanic wreck. It is possible that the submersible collided with a piece of debris, causing it to sink. 3. **Strong currents.** The area where the submersible was operating is also known for strong currents. It is possible that the submersible was caught in a current and dragged away from the surface. 4. **Battery failure.** The submersible's batteries provide power for its propulsion, life support, and communications systems. If the batteries failed, the submersible would have been unable to surface. 5. **Oxygen depletion.** The submersible has a limited supply of oxygen. If the oxygen supply was depleted, the occupants of the submersible would have succumbed to asphyxiation. 6. **Fire.** A fire on board the submersible could have caused it to sink. Fires can be difficult to extinguish in confined spaces, and they can quickly spread. 7. **Hydrostatic pressure.** The water pressure at the depth of the Titanic's sinking is very high. If the submersible's hull was damaged, it could have imploded under the pressure, causing it to sink. 8. **Human error.** It is always possible that human error played a role in the submersible's disappearance. The operators of the submersible could have made a mistake, or they could have been overcome by the stress of the situation. 9. **Sabotage.** It is also possible that the submersible was sabotaged. This is a remote possibility, but it is worth considering. 10. **Unknown cause.** It is also possible that the submersible's disappearance is due to some unknown cause. This could be something that we have not yet considered, or it could be something that we will never know. These are just 10 of the possible reasons what happened to the OceanGate submersible. The truth is, we may never know for sure what happened. However, the search and rescue effort is continuing, and we will hopefully get some answers soon.

Former passengers have stated that for every five dive attempts, they usually only find the Titanic once or twice -- sometimes not at all. Odds are you couldn't find the Titanic, a huge object, let alone this thing; not visually anyway. One thing is certain, this thing is experimental, unique design and materials, and it should have been subjected to serious pressure tests in a lab every so many dives. The front of this is manually bolted down; and I mean manually. You would think they would at least use some kind of automated device that insured the bolts were tightened to correct pressure. Men do this one at a time with specialized wrenches. I would never get on something like that.

I looked at how that "sub" was put together, and it is borderline frightening. Those metal frames looked like they've been purchased at the local hardware store! Most concerning to me were the exposed wiring and electronics at the back of this thing. I was sure that all electronics were inside the hull, not outside, but they are outside! Wiring harnesses just hanging out and circuit boards enclosed in what looked like some basic plexiglass boxes with removable panels. I think I may have spotted a zip tie or two. All this critical hardware was repeatedly exposed to the crushing pressure cycles and corrosive sea water. Throw in some 12Volt Optima batteries, a Bluetooth PlayStation controller and a few monitors and you've got yourself a "submarine!" This is utter insanity! I wouldn't submerge this thing deeper than 10 ft. On top of all this, the single hatch can only be opened from the outside.

When I found out they only charged 200k for the trip, I was stocked. I expected them to be charging a million just because of the dangers and complications that can arise, I'd expect the amount to be much higher. Apparently the lower price explains why this little cheap submersible has almost zero safety precautions, no backup plans in case of emergency, no accreditation, no ability to even retrieve the damn thing if it went down and almost no ability to steer, or ballast. What's even more crazy about all of this is, the people that are going to pay to go down and take this kind of trip WOULD'VE paid a million a seat. With that money there should have been every safety precautions imaginable, ability to retrieve the damn thing, proper backup plans and capabilities for IF a problem arose, not to mention ensuring the damn thing is worthy of going to these depths. I don't know how bad I feel for those that willingly do stuff like this, my personal opinion is LEAVE IT FKNG BE and let the real experts document it.

In my opinion, that submersible was crushed under the pressure of the ocean, and long before any oxygen, heat, or communication would have run out.
@dhm7815
@dhm7815 Жыл бұрын
Not crushed. Any leak would not just be a drip but would be propelled in relentlessly by the pressure. It would go on until the water had squeezed the air until the sub was filled. The pressure at the bottom is 380 bar so the bubble of air would equalize when the air was 1/380 = 0.2% of the original volume. Even if the leak was tiny and dripped it would continue till it filled the chamber. When air pressure goes up, nitrogen becomes soluble and enters the bloodstream. That's why deep diving uses helium and oxygen. Also, oxygen gets poisonous when pressurized. Using the mix in ordinary air the pressure at 500 feet of seawater will kill a human with hyperoxia in 2 hours. That's the point where the freezing survivor(s) would be breathing the air bubble at the top 7% of the chamber.

A cable is solid metal. It is incompressible, like any crystalline solid. It will 'withstand" whatever pressure. Think about it: there are many cables on the outside of that submarine. Also, the drag caused by the cable would be a huge problem, it would behave like an unwanted sail.

I was shocked to see all the exposed wiring and electronics at the back of the submersible. All those wires and boxes were located in the fin. You can clearly see a counter weight (the white "bricks"), to balance out the total weight of the people. Otherwise it would just tip over. That part of the fin is not within the carbon-fibre structure, and is simply sealed off by (metal?) paneling. Many wires were simply strapped to the structure via what looks like regular plastic zip ties. Unreal. There is no way all these crucial parts in the fin can withstand that amount of pressure. Give it a couple of cycles and all that material simply disintegrates. This all screams unprofessionalism. At a very high cost.

The Titan Submersible looks very cheaply made and to pay £250,000 to go and risk your life like that as it's very dangerous down at the wreck site and a man took his 19-year-old son with him, how stupid? This is not a tourist attraction!! 1500 people lost their lives the night Titanic sank, so leave well alone! it's a grave site!! I think there's a possibility that because of the strong currents down there, the sub could have been sucked into the wreckage and they are trapped. The fact that the people inside can still run out of air and die even if the sub has somehow reached the surface seems crazy to me. Was there really no way to make the sub be able to open from the inside... or at least a way to let some air in?

The carbon fiber pressure hull glued to a titanium ring with a glass porthole I believe. Different materials have different properties under pressure and temperatures. Didn't appear to have environmental systems that could be used in case of fire or toxic atmosphere. Remember Apollo 1? Operated by a remote controller. Wireless? Bluetooth? Extra batteries? Backup systems? One test to just below 3000 feet with 1 crewmember? Test depth vs design depth? Who were the design team? Saddened me to know.
