Only iron ore blocks before raw iron existed could be picked up without turning into ingots. If you mined diamond ore (this rule still applies today) it would just drop a diamond and not the diamond block. You would never smelt diamond ore, it just gave you a diamond.

​@@Jotham Ok found it. This might not be the best solution or the most efficient way but getting a yellow banner shield from an island like that is just miracle. First get the tree and grow more tree. Next wait for zombie to spawn and kill them for 1 iron. Next push the zombies in the water pond and convert them to drown, hope that you get a drown with fishing rod and kill it for fishing rod. Use the fishing rod to get bone, string. String can be craft into wool for the banner and bone can be craft into bone meal, use the bone meal on the grass for yellow flower (which can only grow on plain biome and im assuming the biome in the video is plain) turn the flower into dye and into wool for the banner. Assemble everything, iron, wood, yellow wool and craft the item. Sorry for bad english, time to check the video edit: wow, im mostly correct just the dye part wrong but well you did get the fishing rod which can be used for the dye too.
