A team from Hessischer Rundfunk accompanied the 68 passengers and 31 crew members for three weeks on their 3,600-kilometer journey on the historic "African Explorer" special train from Cape Town (South Africa) to Windhoek (Namibia). On the exclusive route, travelers experience endless expanses, fascinating landscapes, the highest dunes, stylish lodges, nature reserves with unique wildlife, a ghost town and numerous traces of German colonial history.
In the "African Explorer" the way is the goal. At a relaxed travel speed of a maximum of 50 kilometers per hour, travelers get to know exotic destinations and real worlds of longing. As a railway fan, Stefan John is blown away by the rolling hotel with its 18 wagons. The two Berliners Yvonne Zermin and Jeannette Hartmann love to sit in the bar car or on the open viewing platform. Meanwhile, train manager Senele Mkiza is responsible for ensuring that everything runs smoothly on the African rail adventure. The young couple Maren Kogge and Dominik Hartmann from Upper Bavaria are looking forward to their first safari, and for Peter Müller and Thomas Geissert, traveling by train is simply part of their vacation. The two men from Langen have been a couple for 23 years.
The "African Explorer" is pulled by a 2200 hp machine. First with an electric locomotive and from De Aar with a diesel locomotive (from General Motors). Due to the rails, a speed of only 35 to max. 50 km/h is possible. The train is 396 meters long in total. About 30 people accompany the travelers as staff (18 of them are often seen and then many more who work in the background).
