Apologies that had to cut out footage of me painting Permanent yellow deep from the video. It was refusing to compile with that clip in for some reason and I’d been editing for four hours by this point. So it just had to go.

These paints have insane contrast. I have DS and these out perform them especially when I’m feeling lazy or don’t feel like trying. Always look so amazing. I hope they never dull them, they are easy to neutralize and you still get full, full contrast

I adore Mijello Mission Gold. Your swatching was dreamy. You make some good points for beginners. Their naming conventions are not good, e.g. Cerulean and Viridian. I found that out almost immediately after getting them, so now I just refer to most of their colors by pigment number or the conventional name. My first set (after a Cotman set) was the 24 pan palette and it is my go to palette. Like the 36, it has a number of mixed colors, and some of them do not play well with others. The mixed Burnt Sienna will not make a nice neutral with Ultramarine. Next I ordered a set of 24 pure pigments, and realized why they name some things the way they do. It seems to me they decided to sell pure pigments after they had come out with pre-mixes, so Yellow Ochre #2 is PY42, whereas Yellow Ochre #1 is the mix you showed (and is more transparent than the pure pigment). Same with Cerulean (Phthalo Blue GS) - the real Cerulean PB35 is called Cobalt Cerulean Blue. Burnt Sienna #2 is PR102, and Dark Burnt Sienna is the PBr7 version- both wonderful. The pure pigment earths are great, the mixes are good on their own, but are iffy to mix with additional pigments unless you really understand your color wheel. They are incredibly pigmented, they have almost no fillers. As a result, a tiny amount goes a long long way. I had to learn to use more water to pigment than with other brands. I know it took me a while to get to be able to make a light tint with these. They also don’t use much flowing agents, so the pigments don’t tend to move very much as compared to some other brands. This is actually a pretty good thing for newcomers to watercolor because I think it gives a better feeling of control. I just ordered the rest of their pure pigments so I have a complete set. Their website has color charts that list the pigments in their mixes so you can make your own mixes from pure pigments. Also, several people noted they did not have the same colors in their sets. It seems they offer different palettes in different geographic regions, but these end up being sold all over via Amazon. Have no idea why.

This is one of my favorite sets! I prefer these for more illustrative purposes and it has some of my favorite blues, specifically that Prussian Blue. It even made me appreciate the uses of certain ones like Opera more because I honestly used to dislike that color quite a bit. I use them for brighter pieces that usually would be planned more around making prints of, so I typically don't need to do too many mixes and paint a bit more on the more opaque side with them compared to how I might use other brands. I do agree not to give it to a beginner just starting out because it does unfortunately limit you in learning and understanding mixes and can give you a bit of convenience color overload. I really enjoyed your swatches in this video and can't wait to see what's next!

Your swatchbook is very aesthetically pleasing. :) I agree with you, that the Mission Gold colours seem very bright, it's the same in their Pure Pigment set and I find them difficult to use, although they feel really nice. Thank you for the swatching, it was relaxing to wacht and your comment was very informative.

you know a color is bright when the yellows aren't the ones 'peaking' the camera's balance xD that opera is *loud*.

I love this set and the pure pigment set. Thank you for clearing up the naming discrepancies! Very helpful as a beginner. I do love the bright colors, earth tones, and variety. So worth it!

Even their opera is heavenly too! It will always break my heart that the lightfast rating on them all is so poor. That and the yellow green are my absolute favourite. I have a mixed tin of over 40 colours, yet I can always see the mijello ones just because they're so vibrant and beautiful xxx

It's interesting to see PR122 mixed into several of the colours, this is the first time I've noticed that. Usually I see paint brands use PV19 for mixes.

I do have only one mijello colour - and this is vandyke green. Like you, I thought it gorgeous when I searched for a moody green in autumn. The "problem" with viridian being PG7 and/or too intense is quite common, I've seen it in the van Gogh colour range, too. Would be interesting to see if Renesans is the same... In this set I would miss pinks. I personally use Quin Rose quite often, on its own as well as for mixing. Opera would be no substitute for me because it is fugitive... Thanks for showing, Oto! Great video :)

With so many multi-pigment colours, it would be hard to mix your own colours without them getting muddy.
@macCALICOmac

Jen Goodwyn I've never understood this, can you explain why it would happen? 🌈
@mdragon5536
@mdragon5536 5 жыл бұрын
@@macCALICOmac when you are color mixing, more paint pigments = more unpredictable results. A good example is when you try to mix a bright blue purple from a red and blue, and instead you get a sad muddy purple. There might be a yellow pigment in the red paint, and since yellow is on the opposite side of the color wheel from purple, that yellow pigment dirtied the mixture. This is not completely true across the board tho, if you get a mixed pigment red but all the pigments are the same kind of cool red, then you should still get the mixed colors you expect to get from a cooler red.
@jengoodwyn2715
@jengoodwyn2715 5 жыл бұрын
@@macCALICOmac Hi Pippa, I noticed some of the blues had greens in them, so if you wanted to make a purple from a blue and a red, the red will react to the green and green as red are each other's compliment so made each other brown, and this will affect the purple.

I love that palette! Thank you for explaining the incorrect names given to the pigments. Such as cobalt blue. That looked like an ultramarine to me. I need a lesson on pigment names and the correct colors associated with them. Maybe if I could get a hold of all the pigments names and paint swatches of each pigment name I could make flash cards to learn them.

Thank you for swatching these! I was interested in the set, but I'm picky about my blue range. This set seems too phthalo blue concentrated, that cerulean seems nowhere near what I think of as cerulean!

I was thinking that too. Perhaps obtaining PR101/PR102 pigments is difficult or expensive in Korea, depends on the geology of the area and it's neighbours.

I think Mission Gold has really good lightfastness, i like them better than Daniel Smith, which tend to fade faster than the MG. All pigments are going to fade with exposure to sunlight, I use a UV protectant on my artwork, to minimize fading i advise to keep them away from direct sunlight.

Interesting... the 36 set is sold in US with a different palette which has exactly 36 wells. I bought it on Amazon for $72 in 2018. I agree that the set has a minor naming problem. My swatch card shows only pigment codes not names. Lol.

I do have this set, it didn’t come with that palette, but with a 36 well palette and the colours in 7ml tubes ( dividend in 4 cardboard boxes) . I use the set a lot, mainly because of the palette, it’s so practical on my table. Don’t think much of the colour names anymore since I’m familiar with the colours behaviour, but, yes it would be confusing if I should do. I will substitute some of the colours with single pigments when I use up what I have. The opera rose will last forever, don’t like it at all, to bright even for my sketchbook.

Thank you so much for this video! I’ve heard this brand is more like a high end student grade rather than professional. What is your opinion?When dry some of the colors appear chalky (it’s hard to tell from the video). On your follow up video could you include something on transparency and lightfastness? Looking forward to seeing more!

Yeah I think that's a good description for this set. The 'chalkyness' I've gone into a bit more in the pure pigment set mission gold video. I can absolutely do those things for you on a follow up video.

I gifted to myself this set for this Christmas(it's on the way, yay!) I have some tubes and a sample of their 24 set and since I got it I've been abusing of it and it blows my mind, despite being a tiny sample set, I've painted so many things with it. I don't think I will ever finish those 7ml tubes haha. I wish they would reformulate their Indigo tho, I don't mind their mixed colors as long as they tell me what they put in there, but the Indigo mix is so ugly by default... Totally agree with the Ultramarine too, not fan of it.

Did you like this set or the pure pigment set better? I watched both reviews and really liked the way you swatches them out. I’m debating on purchasing the mission gold but not sure which one to go with (36 with big palette or 24 pure pigments), and also I’ve heard a lot of conflicting reviews on this line, so am rather unsure. I wish the 36 set had that cobalt turquoise color as it is very gorgeous. Is it possible to mix that color?

The last 10 colors in the swatch, plus the two dark blues, make for a great 12-color muted/neutral palette. The rest are too bright and not useful for most professional-looking illustration. I also checked the #mijellomissiongold tag on instagram, and it has the most amateur-looking artworks than any other brand, not because the artists were bad, but because the colors looked juvenile bright. I understand that Mijello tried to create something new in the watercolor space with their new formulation, but they shot themselves on the foot in the process.
