This was one of the most intense cold opens I've ever watched. They really pulled out all the stops on this movie. This was written pre-pandemic... and came out during the year that AI actually started exploding into popular culture and real life. A very timely film. Also, an insane cast. And to quote the director: "The only thing that scares me more than [the cliff jump in this one], is what we have planned for the next one."

@VerowakReacts they did a behind the scenes video for it. All the prep work and then day of. It's truly impressive. The only CG is covering the ramp with mountain and removing cameras and such.

Mission: Impossible lives and dies with the stunts, and sometimes that comes at the expense of a story. However much I loved Fallout, it started to put too much emphasis on stunts at the expense of believability. In this one they forgot to write the villain's motivation, and shoehorned an undeveloped history with Ethan Hunt into it in 2 3-second flashbacks. There is no emotional attachment to anyone other than the 3 core members and Ilsa, and Ilsa is stabbed, and is dead in the next scene. Her death has no meaning other than fulfilling the Entity's prophecy. I hope we get a more satisfying story in Dead Reckoning Part II, and the history between Hunt and Gabriel gets more attention.

I see his attachment to grace is just him seeing his younger self. Sure she is not a "mind reading shapeshifting incarnation of chaos" just yet. And some driver training is very much required. But that is also exactly why he trusted Ilsa so quickly.

Maybe we have another fake out on our hands? Maybe? Sure it would undermine this movie a bit, but I think we'd be for it! Pacing was just a bit slow overall - the beats in scenes just seemed off to me, but still a fun movie.

I can never understand the people who say that Grace is "replacing" Ilsa. Ilsa was literally never on the team to begin with. She always did her own thing, sometimes ending up helping the team out. Whereas Grace is joining the IMF proper, similarly to how Ethan, Benji and Luther did back in the day.

@pdegan2814

@@jacksonwan Rebecca Ferguson had a 3-picture deal for Mission, and chose not to sign on for the 8th movie because the process of making them frustrated her. Because there's so much figuring out as they go, she had a lot of down time but she couldn't go do other things since she'd never know when they would need her for filming. She wanted to work more consistently(which she has been, with two Dune movies and two seasons of Silo, among other things). So unless she's deliberately misleading everyone to save a big surprise for MI:8, we've sadly seen the last of Ilsa. Which I am PISSED about, she was my favorite character.

Great reaction like always this movie is EPIC, and what a twist i didnt expect Ilsa dying. but i understand Ilsa's death is a turning point for the franchise, as it deeply affects Ethan Hunt and sets up emotional stakes for the upcoming film. It also creates a personal grievance against Gabriel, adding another reason for vengeance, But she will appear in the next MI8 movie as flashbacks moments. And some funfacts about this movie, Cruise's co-star Pom Klementieff says there is one stunt Cruise was not on board with while filming. During a fight sequence set in Venice, Klementieff asked the actor to kick her in the stomach, which he absolutely refused to do. "I kept telling him to just kick me here," the actress says. "I was squeezing abs. [I said], 'You can just go for it.' He was like 'No, no, no, no, no.' I was like, 'But it's going to help me!' But he wouldn't do it." Cruise destroyed six motorcycles in just one day while filming, by driving them off a cliff. "In terms of this movie, definitely the motorcycle jump [was the scariest]," McQuarrie says. Vanessa Kirby says filming was so specific, she did 40 takes of her simply picking up a key. "We did 40 takes of picking up a key, and it was so fun because actually, you realize by take 30, you're thinking as an actor, yeah, you're just picking up a key, but I thought, 'How many ways can a human being pick up a key?'" she says. Keep up the amazing work.

Another reactor pointed something out about Grace that might explain Ethan's inexplicable attachment toward her; I agree it feels a bit odd and forced compared to past characters, I can't say rushed because it has often happened over the course of a single film and this is no exception. That said, I'd like to point out that other than their initial interaction which was a bit flirty, there hasn't really been anything resembling romantic interaction between them. It's a bit presumptuous to assume that's his entire motive when we have no reason to think so other than because she's a woman he clearly cares about, and his most recent interest died. I'm just saying, I don't know that "new romantic interest" is really what we're supposed to take away from it, at least I hope it isn't, because that will have been very poorly handled if that's the case. And I get that the root of the issue IS that he "clearly cares about" this person he just met who has given him no glaring reason to care so much about her, other than existing and having similar "professional interests" to put it one way - but if there's any credence to what the reactor I was watching suggested, we can expect a very solid explanation as to what exactly is going on with them in the next film, making it potentially redundant to fret about it too much right now. I think we're _meant_ to not fully understand at this point. You have to watch this film with not just the awareness but _understanding_ that it's only half of an entire story, and there are going to be loose ends and details that won't fully make sense without seeing the other half.

There's conspiracy theroies around that Ilsa is not dead, which I could see happening. If she is actually dead (more likely) it was just poorly done, and doesn't make sense. It would be one instance where McQuarrie/Cruise's make-the-script-up-as-they-shoot style did not work.

"I don't know how I feel about AI being the villain". Those were basically my same thoughts coming out of it. I know what they were trying to do, I just think it ultimately came out a little sloppy. Also, maybe unpopular, but I thought the car chase completely killed the momentum for me.

McQuarry and Tom have gotten into a shoot first, come up with a story in the editing room later approach. It's starting to show this is not the way to make a movie. You need a story, character motivations, and a fleshed out antagonist. Neither the Entity (which is a cool concept if executed well), nor Gabriel have character motivation. And you can't just show a couple of short flashbacks without any explanation, and expect the audience to care about what happened between Hunt and Gabriel. I don't even know the person Gabriel killed.

I suppose that as the A.I. is very current now, A.I. is used for everything, then it must have seemed to them a good argument for a story of an A.I. that takes conscience of itself, although James Cameron had already raised this in Terminator with Skynet, the A.I. that takes conscience of itself and decides to finish with the humanity. And if we go further back in time, Stanley Kubrick used the A.I. in 2001 Space Odyssey, to control a large ship, called HAL that A.I. and also went rogue.

My late wife and I met at the University of Florida in 1966. Lums was our favorite hangout on weekends with many of our friends. Our attraction to Lums had to do as much with their hotdogs steamed in beer and the TV they had. I think we watched every episode of Mission Impossible, Star Trek, & Bonanza at Lums. I've been a fan ever since, even after I lost my dear wife in 1990 from cancer.😢 Getting old but still love MI. Trying to get current wife of 28 years into MI but she's more of a reading person.

Tom has been very vocal against the rise of AI in the film industry, so it's an interesting parallel that the actor and his (arguably) most iconic role share their greatest adversary. Originally it did seem like Part II was going to be the series finale, but Tom has expressed interest in continuing to make more, so we'll have to see! Highly recommend adding Edge of Tomorrow to your Cruise watchlist! They completely botched the marketing so it didn't get as much viewership as it deserved, but it's easily one of his most fun, especially if you've liked the MI movies.

Great stuff V. I think this one rules - in the top half of the Mission films for me at least. Yeah there's a lot of theorizing about whether the Ilsa situation is all as it seems, like it may be a ploy to trick the entity or something(?) - I think the fact that they set up a previous fake death, a big return to close up magic, lots of focus on those specific knives, that it was conceived as a two part story, etc, may or may not mean something. 🤞 Guess we'll find out in like 18 months lol

So they've said again and again and again that the next one is NOT the final _Mission: Impossible_ movie. However to me, this one, while still a good (half of a) film, was somewhat disappointing and maybe shows the limits of having the same director four times in a row instead of what used to make _Mission: Impossible_ special, which is changing directors and styles which each film. The character of Ilsa is treated very poorly, the villain (be it "the entity" or Gabriel) is just confusing and uninteresting and the retcon of all the agents being ex-criminals who were "given a choice" is very weird and nonsensical.

For me this series definitely peaked with Rogue Nation. Fallout was still fun but not as good, though it did give some nice closure to Ethan & Julia's story and honestly I think it would have made a solid conclusion to the series. This movie however? God, what a mess. Tom Cruise & Christopher McQuarrie(who's been the director since Rogue Nation) have basically admitted that they figure out the story for these movies as they're filming, and this time it caught up with them. IMF vs Skynet, really? That's about the point in the James Bond movies where they realize they went too far and scale things back for the next one. Plus, the action scenes all went on too long, this movie could've and probably should've been a good 20 minutes shorter at least. And like many, I was PISSED with how they handled Ilsa in this movie. I love Hayley Atwell, and am thrilled she got a chance to have such a big role in a massive blockbuster like this, but I don't think her character will fill the void. The one bright spot for me with this movie was Pom Klementieff as Paris. It was fun seeing her out of the Mantis makeup from Guardians Of The Galaxy, and I thought she kicked ass. I'd love to see her get more action roles out of this.

I was a bit disappointed in this movie (compared to how succinct and tight Fallout was). Dead Reckoning had too many moving parts. And bringing in Haley Atwell as a "new" love interest for Ethan was silly considering Ilsa was still around. The plot was difficult to grasp on the first viewing (IMO), and the stunts weren't particularly mind-bending, and they seemed more like a video game based on a movie instead of the movie itself. Perhaps Part 2 will help elevate this one.

To be fair, The Syndicate was a major element of the TV series. This, however, is no longer about The Syndicate. The Syndicate was at least interesting. This is a rogue AI, which doesn't need to be a bad thing, but the antagonist we interact with is completely undeveloped. Two short flashbacks that shows something happened to some unknown person sometime in the past before even the first Mission: Impossible movie, and Hunt wants Gabriel dead. How am I supposed to care about someone without a backstory or motivation killing someone we've never seen in a storyline that was never filmed?
