In the book about the programme it says that Lalo Schifrin was always happy to return to score an episode or two in each series and that you could always tell the difference.

There's a funny story about how Lalo composed the theme, told by himself: after hours and hours without a satisfactory tune, he stand up and with his hands hit the keyboard twice, frustrated. And that gave him the start of the main title theme! The rest, well, is music...
