How could a person set a snare inside a National Park??
@KatmaiNationalParkandPreserve8 жыл бұрын
The snare was set outside the boundaries of Katmai National Park. Brown bears are capable of traveling huge distances, and sometimes roam outside of the protection of the park.

@@KatmaiNationalParkandPreserve 5 years ago but still hoping someone might answer me😬 I was wondering why the shot wasn't taken on day 1? It looked like it was actually a better shot but I also heard him say he was going to dart her rump but shot her shoulder 🤷🏼♀️ just interested is all. Wondering if a big tube of antibiotic ointment would have worked? I know it heals Reptiles wonderfully. It could possibly keep flies off also....but then the flies only eat dead tissue so....🤷🏼♀️

@@KatmaiNationalParkandPreserve How is it known where she got caught in the snare?
@snappingbear Жыл бұрын
@@kica4396 I'm not sure what you mean, but in that situation you take the shot at the first opportunity otherwise you might not get another one. Also the front shoulder isn't a bad spot especially in the fall when bears have a lot of fat deposition on their hips. The drug will not work as well nor as quickly if it's deposited in fat as opposed to muscle tissue. I'd say the entire process from setup to full processing went as well as could be expected given the situation. Two hours after injection to head up movements is exactly what you hope you for. The use of topical antibacterial solutions and ointments doesn't really help much since the wound its open and the application washes away easily. Injections of antibiotics is best. The only thing I'd have some criticism about is they didn't use a blindfold and eye ointment to protect the bear's eyes. Nonetheless, they did a great job. Bear 854 Divot has recovered perfectly from the ordeal. Now there is another bear with what looks like a snare around its neck that was just seen yesterday by the bear cam viewers. Hopefully it can be rescued as 854 Divot was.

Very compelling video. I hope that whenever there is an intervention that the bears are tagged and that there is a good outcome. I did not think that trapping was allowed in the park. I guess it maybe difficult to ascertain where the bear has been. 🐻
@nardaviiel3 жыл бұрын
The speculation I (no more than an internet rando) have heard from rangers is that, since Katmai bears are known to leave the park, Divot left and got caught in a snare that was set out of season. They don't like the invasiveness of leaving a tag or collar on bears, so Divot is still untagged! However, if she's observed, the scar around her neck makes her hard to mistake for any other bear.
@Nyx7732 жыл бұрын
29:37 They gave her an identification tattoo on the inside of her lip. The trap was outside of the park on private land.

I referred friends who were angry at the Cincinnati zoo for not tranquilizing the gorilla after the 4 year old boy fell into its habitat. Watching Divot after being darted drives home how disastrous it could have been for the little boy, had the zoo decided to try to tranquilize him. So happy you made this video....

As deep as that cut is - I was suprised it didn't require stiches
@wildchild75657 ай бұрын
It was a large open, infected wound, and those are generally left to heal by secondary intention. The wound was cleaned and will heal by granulating in from the bottom to the top of the wound. If closed with sutures, it would have resulted in a massive infection with purulent drainage and would never have healed.
