Hello Mrs. Ricks happy to cross you here! 20 years ago I was walking through Bruges (Belgium) and there was a sidewalk advertisement at a wine bar on my way back to the car. This evening : Jerry Ricks '' A little later we were sitting with our knees together in a corner of the cramped bar enjoying a musician I have never forgotten who performed the 'hambones' for me. Now I regularly play his records that have become oh so timeless. May he rest in peace.

I started listing to John Hurt recordings shortly after his death in the mid 1960's when I was just learning how to play and I tried unsuccessfully so hard to play like him. Then, in the late 1970's I was in Grenada Mississippi on business and casually asked the gentleman for whom we were doing some work if Mississippi John Hurt was from around there. He said, "Yes, as a matter of fact his son is white washing the outside of this building we're in." Burt went outside and brought him in and introduced us and I asked him if he could play the guitar and he said he could't afford to own one but yes he could play. I loaned him my acoustic and he proceeded to beautifully play either Stack-O'Lee Blues or Candy Man Blues and to me it sounded just like his father! I've often thought about John Hurts son and wondered what ever became of him..... but I have an idea it wasn't good since he was very poor, and living in rural Mississippi.

I saw him live at Carnegie Hall in 1964. There were many artists on the bill and he only did a few songs, but I still feel honored to have seen and heard him.

James, most of us feel the same. I remember the very first time I heard him on the radio in 1972. I was transfixed and had to go out and buy ever album that was available. Oh, so long ago. I call John my musical godfather although I don’t write like him. One day I will. If there is a fest this year, I will likely be there.

I had the good fortune to see him live in 1960s. He was playing in a club in the West Village in NYC (maybe Gerde's Folk City). Great memory 60 years later.

I used to see he him at the Gaslight Cafe on Macdougal st. He always brought a coffee can out on stage and between songs he would sip from the can, then hold it up to the audience and say "Good to the Last Drop"!

genius. that ain't just finger picking chords. thats playing melody or at least riffs, and accompaniment at the same time. sounds like two guitars. but its just one. usually only classical or calypso quitarists can play this way. god rest his soul. he influenced Leo Kotke and John Fahey(sp?). another thing is he picked with his finger tips, not lengthened finger nails or banjo picks that fit over thumb, forefinger and middle finger. so that probably is responsible for the mellower tone, but it sounds like a one man band. Candy Man is one my favorite Hurt songs

You think that the melody and bass seperation is a unique thing but many many great guitarists of john hurts era played in this style. It was not just a classical style, it was all over the blues. Rev gary davis, blind blake, lightning hopkins.. etc

Anton sat in the front row at the Oberlin College concert April 15, 1965. Record released as "Best of" and Son House was on the bill. John Hurt so spry and wry.

I have much respect for John Hurt, watching him play is mesmerizing and truly amazing to watch; a playing style that seems very rare these days to ever come across, and John truly perfects it and is a one of a kind. I never get tired of his music, it's too bad I was born in 1991 and discovered his music for myself for the first time in 2004. Wish I could have seen him perform in person back in the 1960's as well as see other blues legends and musicians.

I had the good fortune to see him play on a park bench in Berkeley in about '66. He played great and smiled the whole time. What a winning smile he had.

I too got to see him play several times in the DC area in the mid 60s. He was a fine musician of course, but more than anything he had a wonderful spirit that came forth when he got a chance to play before people. The thought that he might have just finished his days in obscurity in Avalon Mississippi would have been a gigantic loss to us all. Thanks to the folks who spent the effort to go and find him and get him performing again. And, most certainly, thanks to him for leaving his very special legacy.

I threw pallets for extra change for my son and i ! Still have one of the two trucks we rolled around at the getting places I established exclusive like because Me Hurt us right. No telling how much further we naygo. But we'll take your throw away pallet put them in piles on our garage floor outside its back door and collect the change to share in glory because we will always find more.
