I have uploaded some advanced transcriptions of finger picking songs. I thought for those of you that are relative beginners to this idiom of blues finger picking a few introductory pieces might help to get you up to speed. The next Transcription to be uploaded to KZbin is Mississippi John Hurt’s “Since I Laid My Burden Down.”
This version is from his original recording but has many of the more complex parts removed but still stands as piece to learn and progress to the next level which is the Intermediate piece that I will also upload to KZbin. The original recording is at 98bpm these Late Beginner & Intermediate are set to 70bpm.
What is beginner and intermediate is how comfortable you feel playing these songs. You will have to be the judge of where you are. If these prove popular I will do more before uploading the main transcription in the future.
Insights:
This style of playing has to have a rock steady alternating bass: This is the foundation for the melody and singing. The notes fall on beats 1, 2, 3 & 4 on strings 6, 5 & 4 and in most cases do not deviate from this structure in a 4/4 time signature. Also, they are very repetitive so not that hard to learn.
The melody notes are usually played on the 1st, 2nd & 3rd strings and will have combinations of being on the beat (played at the same time as thumb) and off the beat (syncopation) between the bass notes. To combine the two elements will come easier for some than others but is so rewarding when you can combine the two together (a bit like rubbing your tummy and patting your head simultaneously - only a bit harder)!
The chords (Harmony) are first position C, F, Am & G. Try to get used to using your fretting hand thumb to play the 6th string 1st fret note of the F chord as this style really needs this approach. Your little finger gets a workout as well playing the third fret and at bar 62 slides to the 5th fret melody note. Your first and second fingers of your picking hand ‘play’ (recommended but feel free to experiment) the melody notes, your thumb plays all the alternating notes on the 6th, 5th and 4th strings.
Enjoy.
