Underglaze Tutorial: Gradient and Ombre’- How to Blend Underglaze

If you’ve bisqued your piece before underglazing, you can wet your pot to slow the underglaze drying so quickly. Since you already had layers of underglazes down though, you could wipe down the inside with a very wet sponge. The idea is to soak the bisqueware so that the water in the underglaze takes longer to be absorbed. I love your designs! I don’t know much about earthenware (I only work with stoneware) but your underglaze skills are awesome!

Judy, I am so glad you found some inspiration here! I love underglazes, they're my jam. Saving you first pieces is so important! Don't give them away either. Keep the worst and earliest ones you have. Do some glazing tests on them to learn but also so that you can see your growth. I wish I had some of my crazy bad cylinders that I first made. I think about them a lot so I can remind myself how far I've come and their memory encourages me to keep growing! Good luck!

Great tutorial. The symbol of the smile and the parachute reminds me of a mask- less face. The "mask" being that parachute being lifted off from the smile. Those strings are a symbol of the mask being removed giving freedom to a smile. Thank you for this video

You might try adding silkscreen extender base to your underglazes for the ombre effect. I've heard this helps w/blending underglazes.

Have you tried airbrushing it to get the right gradient? I also found out, that browns and fawn colours need a lot more than only 3 layers. You can also paint the images first 3 or more times, then brush on some wax resist and then spray paint the gradient over the top... There is many ways to skin a cat, but its always good to have some options. Oh, btw. I love the pattern making. We learnt that in art school too and I love the process. Thanks so much for sharing. Hello! Love your videos. So helpful to a newbie! Question: Can you apply underglaze on top of regular glaze (either before or after firing)? Or does underglaze need to be done first?

Thanks for watching Brooklyn, underglaze should be applied and fired before applying glaze. I have only seen horrible outcomes when my students mix them, layer them before firing or apply UG on top of glazes.

The pitcher turned out so beautifully Linnea. My question to you is do you know if adding CMC gum or liquid dish soap would retard the fast drying of the underglaze? I find doing an ombré with underglaze is difficult and frustrating because of the fast drying. Any advice? Thanks 😊

Carol, what an interesting idea! I never even thought of adding something to make it stay wetter, longer. Mainly because my instinct is that it has more to do with the porous quality of the clay than the wetness of the underglaze. I have used acrylics and latex on clay and both also dry quicker than normal on the clay. I know that you could prolly wet the whole ceramic piece before you begin and the layers would take longer to dry. You could even have a water bottle out to keep it damp. This is a very industrious idea and I want to play and experiment! Please let me know if you find anything that helps the fast dry time and I will do the same!

was the piece bisque-fired first? or bone dry since it was made in March?

I bisqued it, underglazed it, bisque fired it again, added the glazes and then glaze fired it. In all 3 firings. You could totally underglaze greenware, it will just be more breakable until its first firing. Good luck, hope that helps!!

@@cthepower Yes and no :D The underglaze doesn't get darker, but the glaze makes it darker (not the number of firings). Im this video I do a color comparison at the end

May I ask why you use lug white instead of the velvet white. I really enjoyed watching. I really appreciate how much detail you go into to share what you know. It’s lovely and so is your work

cthepower I am not sure if I got a bad batch once or if it is consistently patchy, but the white velvet was always streaky after 3 layers. So I use lug white instead. Many of the colors have quirks. For example many of the darker colors do not fire consistently. The amethyst sometimes has a light blue that rises up depending on many factors. I usually mix my own purples because of this. I have never used speedball underglaze... but I am hoping to do some research to see if their colors are more consistent.

HI, you mention 2 things that contradict things I had already heard - you said you can mix underglaze like paint? Is that a special brand you use? I have seen some glazes that advertise that fact, but my understanding was they don't all work that way?? You also mention mixing water to thin out the glaze? I have also been told not to do that - that I need a glaze extender, which I have. So again, wondering if that's a brand thing?Thanks for all the info you are sharing

Hi Suz, what I mean by "mix like paint" is that the same color theory applies and the colors are pretty tru and predictable. The colors get darker, however what you see, as far as color hue goes , is what you get. A red underglaze will never, no matter the brand, fire into a blue. This is important info because, unlike underglazes, GLAZES rarely look the same before and after they are fired. Some blues look red when you paint them onto the pot, but after they are fired they are a completely different color. Underglazes are nothing like that. Underglaze colors are predictable. Underglaze is basically colored clay. However glazes are liquid glass. Water can be mixed to thin the underglazes (or glazes, for that matter). However water does not fix all the issue you could have with either. For example some underglazes tend to "crawl." Which means it leaves patches uncovered be cause it crawls away. Crawling kinds looks like rivers of uncovered clay areas. This issue cannot be solved by thinning the glaze or underglaze with water alone. You would need a deflocculant. Deflocculant will keep the particles in your glaze or underglaze from bunching up or clogging up. It helps keep the particles suspended and evenly dispersed. But if your glaze or underglaze has been left to totally dry out, or is very thick, you will still need to add water to thin it out and make it liquid again. I hope this helps :D
