It's crazy how good hostels are getting now. I was just at one in Barcelona that offered a free pub crawl, free dinner every night, free walking tours, and the hostel itself was comfortable and fun. Definitely not the scary, dirty place that some people often think about when they hear the word, "hostel!" :)

So true! Hostels are so legit these days. That one in Barcelona sounds awesome!

Super informative and helpful hostel tips! Thank you! I have just started out with my travel and it has been so far the best decision I made in my life. I have stayed in hostels before and one tiny little detail that I learned (the hard way) is bringing my own travel sheet or bed liner. I have very sensitive skin and even the simple detergent used in the bed sheets I sleep on hostels and even hotels make me itch. And it's very frustrating. Then my best friend gave me a travel sheet from Brave Era for my birthday she found in Amazon and wow! it has been a lifesaver plus it's 100% silk and this is the softest material of cloth I ever slept on. Just wanted to share especially for travelers like me who has sensitive skin and also those who want to avoid bed bugs and other creepy crawlers at night. I did treat it with insect repellent and it has given me peace of mind in my sleep while traveling.

I've been hosteling for many many months in the past. Get your bed linen, pyjamas, toothbrush, toothpaste and towel laid out before you leave the hostel for the day. It minimises fumbling around in the dark when you return. Earplugs are essential for good sleep as people wake up at various times and you'll get woken up by luggage grinding noises. Also leave your mobile phone in your locker overnight or slightly riskier, in your pillowcase under your head when you sleep. Hostels are lifesavers for budget people but you need to be practical and prepared

I'm planning to travel solo to Amsterdam and stay in a hostel. The only thing is I'm 28. will it still be easy to meet people or am I going to feel like an outcast because I'm older than everyone else? haha
@mari.johnson8 жыл бұрын
Age is all about your attitude! Really though. While it's true that there will be a lot of people younger than you, there will also be people that are older. It's really not an issue! Just be friendly and people will be friendly to you. Have so much fun!!! Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities!

@mari.johnson8 жыл бұрын
I've seen people of all ages at hostels! Just read the reviews first and maybe don't pick one that says there's a lot of partying, because that usually indicates mostly younger people (unless of course that's what you want!)

One reason someone might want a private room is if they're traveling with a minor. I grew up traveling and when we stayed in hostels my mom would look for a private room (you never know who else is staying there and what their history might be). Ive done it with my son too after getting rained out on a tenting trip lol. I dont recommend bringing little kids along but it's a really fun experience for a well behaved teen or preteen.

Mari Johnson Mari, thanks for the quick response! We are planning on visiting the 911 memorial but are only interested in seeing the memorial fountain thing. I've been reading online that you now have to pay an admission since they opened the museum. Do you know if the fountain itself is open to the public?

The fountains are in fact free and open to the public. I've been a few times, they're very moving and definitely worth a visit. You only have to pay to go in the museum and up the Freedom Tower. Hope you have a great visit!
