Dear Rhiannon. I just listened to your great performance in Glasgow singing in Gaelic, fantastic stuff. There is something very important that you might know already. Many African Americans spoke Gaelic. There is a Baptist church in Alabama where service took place in Gaelic until 1919! Dizzy Gillespie, born and raised in Chenaw SC , knew his great-grandparents and he told professor Willie Ruff about their proficient use of Gaelic. Willie Ruff , an accomplished musician , musicologist and Yale professor , is the person who has done the most research about the matter. It is no coincidence that the Presbyterian church has been historically very much involved in African-American schools and colleges . There is plenty of research to be done and , in my humble opinion , the extent of The Highlander influence on Gospel music is enormous.

Keystone Tuscanred Thank you ! Btw the Scottish ancestors were not slave masters in most cases, they were indentured servants who married African slaves , until the late XVIIIth century, when it became strictly prohibited to do so.

@@andomikel1 AMAZING! I want to learn more. Do you know the name of the church? I can't find anything in the search.
@andomikel14 жыл бұрын
T Mc yes I do , it’s the Sipsey River Primitive Baptist Church in Eutaw , Alabama . We know that Cape Fear , North Carolina , was the area with the highest percentage of Gaelic speakers . It’s a possibility that this church amongst others was founded by Gaelic free Blacks who migrated from NC to other areas of the South . We need to continue the research started by the great Will Ruff . I live in Singapore at the moment but maybe one day I’ll give a try .

Revisited this so many times.. And each time my awe of Ms Giddens talent doubles.....
Hi MissOhio1000 , the style of music is called "mouth music", and it's bits of poetry that's been strung together with an intent on making a beat more than making sense out of the words. Very earthy kind of song. Also, your video was used in an NPR article/interview with Ms. Giddens, as the example for mouth music, and you can probably find more information there. Very interesting! Thanks for the upload.

ShioriWhitefeather Thanks for letting me know this - really interesting. I found the NPR article at www.npr.org/2015/02/10/384943903/push-it-further-rhiannon-giddens-takes-a-turn-on-tradition in case others are interested.

I saw Rhiannon Giddens perform this (and three other songs) in London with the Kronos Quartet last Sunday.I was very impressed with her voice even though I had made the long trip mainly to see Natalie Merchant for the first time (who sang two traditional songs) as I was unable to get tickets for her own shows the previous weekend.Olivia Cheney and Sam Amidon were also very good.

Wowsa. And mind you, I am already pretty much a slavering fan of all things Rhiannon Giddens. And even going into it with that, with the bar already set ridiculously high - by Rhiannon herself, I reiterate -- that still managed to make me temporarily lose all control of my central nervous system. Just . . . . wow. Seriously, she's not actually human, right? She's the actual mortal incarnation of her namesake, right?

Saw Rhiannon recently at the TLA in Philly. What a show! Her backup band was essentially the current version of the Chocolate Drops, with Hubby Jenkins and the new replacements for Dom Flemons and Leyla McCalla. The recent solo albums of those latter ex-drops are great, especially Leyla's. Just sublime.
