as an addition to this video: Here is some info on their natural habitat www.orchidboard.com/community/orchids-in-the-wild/81595-tolumnia-compressicaulis-hispaniola.html It's not always enough to say that they grow in full sun on branches, one must also specify the temperature and humidity conditions.

Great video! So glad that you have success with Tolumnias. It has taken me 2 years, but I finally have the knack for growing Tolumnias. (I, too, have some flowering for the first time.) I grow mine completely differently from your method, but it works in my climate for my growing methods. (They are in small net pots with clear plastic outer pots to help maintain the humidity. I use no medium and water them once daily. They are grown outdoors hanging in a south facing small tree in our lanai.) Looking forward to your next video.

I love Tolumnias. I have a bunch of them now (all purchased this year) and one of them has been working on a flower spike for two months and has now started to produce another one! So happy! In my hands they seem to really require regular fertilizer - my tap water is very hard so I only use reverse osmosis water... Let's see how they're going to develop

So many beautiful Tolumnias- I remember the fateful day two years ago :( So happy to see your collection grow again! Tolumnia genting volcano has been on my wish list for AGES- I wish I could find this one in the USA *sigh*

Hi Dani, I have the tolumia jairak firm bloody bird.(crazy name) it is very dark red with white and has a lovely fragrance when you about an inch or so from the flowers. When I bought it, it was in a tiny clay pot with rocks. I have repotted it in a glazed clay pot with large bark chips in the bottom and I sprayed the rocks and roots with hydrogen peroxide. I will say this thing has TINY roots! I hope to have good luck with this one, especially since I have two more coming. The magic and the flyer. Have a great day and thanks for all the vids, my orchids are thriving because of them!

I love Tolumnias. I have a Genting Volcano, it was in bloom when I purchased it and I don't remember a fragrance. I do have one that is fragrant - Tolumnia Genting Pink Lady. You have to stick your nose in the blooms to smell them usually, but if there's a lot of flowers I can smell it at a short distance.

I would love a tolumnia update 🥰 I just bought a few more and they really are my favourite! I am still trying to figure out my setup since my 1st purchase of a tolumnia 6 months ago. 1 of those is doing amazingly well, and 1 is struggling to grow roots. I am hoping it is just the winter and once summer comes around it picks up a bit more. I have tried a slightly different setup with the new ones. Added more moss to the media... let's see.

It's great that you have a black background. It's much better display. My first batch of 20 tulomnia could not make it. My ignorance is partly responsible for it. :( But I could not resist going for a new batch. They are in DIY semi hydro. So far so good. One of them did flowered. :)

Ooh, I recently got the Jairak Flyer "Magic" as my first tolumnia. Not doing much, yet (I thought it might be starting a new fan, as there is some tiny nubbin on the base, however it's not moving), but I can't wait to see it bloom. With the same bunch, I also got a blue vanda, which decided to grow 7 keikis, a macodes petola that has grown two leaves, and maxillaria shunkeana, which is growing a new pseudobulb and what might be its first flower (or else it is making two pseudobulbs, but one of them went a bit wrong ... certainly looks like it might be a small bud, though).

I received one of the equitant type Tolumnias as a freebie from Andy's Orchids some years ago, and I absolutely murdered it. The roots dried out so fast! It was mounted and I live in a very dry, hot environment. So sad.
@ratgirl444 жыл бұрын
This is so confusing! Everything I’ve read/heard says to really let them dry out. I was thinking of adding moss to mine but I got scared about them stay wet too long 😒
@MissOrchidGirl4 жыл бұрын
Hi, it's trial and error. No problems here with them being moist for a few days and my back is much happier with less work. But you just have to find the balance in your environment by trying out things. It's also ok if they dry, but when they are dry they need water, not a good idea to wait around for days.
@paulsaunders64924 жыл бұрын
Tolumnias generally like to dry out quickly. In their natural habitat they get lots of air movement and dew every day. The air dries out the roots and fans which are prone to rot if left wet too long. It far simpler to mount your tolumnias which they adore.

My only tolumnia is a Flyer Corona that i got after seeing on your channel. It was like a trial for tolumnias, so far so good...i might get more if i can make this bloom.

I bought a Tolumnia hawkseana just this week and it is nothing at all like any of yours. It is tiny and was provided bare root with the idea of the buyer mounting it. It is basically a cutting from a much larger plant and consists of several very small plants connected by a runner with 3" roots hanging off the whole thing. Rather than mounting it, as I didn't want to deal with the maintenance, I instead mounted it on a moss hill as you would a Neofinetia. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing and I hope he does well. Do you think this is a viable way of growing this orchid? Thanks much! I love your videos and I've bought a few orchids directly inspired by you -- Especially mini orchids.

I have an orchid that was gifted to me and its been constantly blooming (average of 9 blooms) for three years straight as in for every day of the year its been blooming and growing like crazy. So I'm wondering if that's normal for orchids and if that's the case I want to keep buying more to fill up the window seal I have this one in.

Hi Dani, I noticed your pots have no ventilation holes, is this because they don't have well established roots yet? They are compact and adorable. Think I will have to give them a try. ☺

I just ordered a few tolumnias and I was going to try your kokedama method that I watched in another video, but is this the most current set up? I love how you are willing to experiment and try different methods but I'm starting to get confused as to which ones work and which ones don't :) I remember you liked baskets with the nesting material for a while but now you're potting them exactly the same way as all your other orchids with layers of moss and bark. I live in a hot but humid environment (Hawaii) so I was just trying to figure out which method to try first since this is my first time having tolumnias and I didn't want to kill them all as soon as I got them.

Can anyone tell me if Tolumnias remain small or are they also masive root producers? I like small orchids that do not take up a lot of space, and I see miniphals(my fave) will eventually need big pots. Thanks

OMG yes! I just bought two tolumnias last weekend at a flower show. I was hoping for more info from you for the care!!! I re watched your older vids on them just yesterday! I got mine in little baskets, I've just put them down in a cup with clay at the bottom and sphagnum moss around the basket so they don't dry out. What do you think of this set up? I'm in the Caribbean so a similar climate to yours, but a bit hotter and we don't really have a winter. The lowest temp here get to about 22 deg C
