Just two words can explain the similarities between Jamaican Patois and Krio. (The Maroons). The maroons from Jamaica arrived in Sierra Leone in 1800. According to linguists, they influenced the emergent Krio dialect more than any other settler group. Thus explains their similarities

@@dandesonshowers9260really because it is so similar to Gullah and geechee language. I can pretty much understand Krio instantly, it's just a bit faster, but it's the same with patios as well. What is crazy is that I'm not so good at speaking it, but I can understand as many elders in my family kind of talk this way. And the irony is that I have an entry from Sierra Leone!

This was pretty good. Just wanna point out, “How are you” can also be “Aw di bòdi” and the response can be “Di bòdi wèl, tèl gòd tènki”, and also Krio isn’t “broken english” it’s a creole language that has most of its vocabulary come from English. The grammar is completely different though ! Nice work, keep it up ! 😊

In addition, in krio the plural form of words comes with the addition of Dem. like for padi, the singular is Padi and more than one would be Padi dem. singular Plural Pikin Pikin dem Pot pot dem Book book dem the list goes on and on. just add dem and you are fine in most cases.

The Nova Scotians from Halifax Canada were born in the southern slave plantations of the USA especially in South Carolina and Georgia. They arrived in Sierra Leone in 1792. According to linguists, their debated influence on the emergent Krio dialect explains the similarities between Krio and the Gullah Dialect.

I was in Sierra Leone for over a month last summer (2020). Beautiful country. Even more beautiful people. Having traveled much of the world and Caribbean isles, I was very impressed. By the way, I thought in krio, how are you / how are you doing? is --> How da badi? As a guy, it was often my favorite greeting to say : ) That and - come naya!! Last point: I notice a bunch of Jamaicans in the comment section are surprised at the similarities of Krio to Jamaican patois. I urge blacks in the diaspora (i.e. outside of Africa) to visit Sierra Leone - take a trip to Freetown (it's call Freetown for a reason)... and spend some time learning about how Freetown came to be. It will open your eyes in helping some of you re-connect your lineage.

I speak Spanish and I see where "pikin" comes from... it means "little". It's interesting to see words from Romance languages left behind in countries that speak other non-Romance languages... the words stay behind and their original meaning is basically not known to the people there, only the specific meaning acquired by the word is known to those who use it. 🤯

True : Eku-she o! means => Well done o => a typical greeting to a busy person. This is probably from the "liberated" Yoruba sub group of the Krio community who are known as "Aku" because of the way they prefix all greetings with "Eku-..." which stands for "greetings of/for/about ....". So Ekushe is short foe Eku-ishe means "greetings of work" because "ishe" means work"

That's true. I watched a documentary where some old Jamaicans used the terms "waka" for "walk", "taka" for "talk" and "sabi" for "know". I don't hear this in the patois spoken by most Jamaicans nowadays. I also came across these terms in transcripts of the Baptist War "kangaroo" trials in the aftermath of Sam Sharp's uprising. Coincidentally, that uprising took place in North Western Jamaica.
