Just Nightwish doing Nightwish things! Nightwish is their own genre and no other band comes close to the level they are at. Never, in the history of music entertainment, have a set of skills and talent collided in such powerful manner. Tuomas is a true genius as a composer and with lyrics.

All Nightwish songs tell a story with poetical lyrics and most are so deep that few people do not understand them...or just partially. That is a mark of masterpiece writing and also keeps the song alive cause you can study it hundreds of times and not get bored. That is typical for NW songs.

IMO this is THE Nightwish song. Tuomas is baring his soul to this fans and the audience in a way no other song really captures. Others might be more impactful to fans but this embodies what the band is all about. Great parts by all members, and this live version conveys all the emotions.

Wow you really can't please all. There is so much to take in the first many times you hear this complex composition. And if you want to follow the story, well sometimes you may need something else than just the lyrics eg. another screen with additional info or a translation. I think you facial expressions said it all, that you were in the music and lyrics. So never mind those killjoys. Lovely reaction to this epic masterpiece.

Part of the reason it was so underrated for a long time; is one, a lot of people were upset the way Tarja left the band, and many did not like her replacement Anette. I think there are only 4 recordings of this song. The one with Marco, which is much darker. One with Marco and Anette live, the original studio version, and now this live version with Floor. The 5th part is quotes from Tuomas's mom from the conversions they had when he came home and he talked to his parents about what is going on. You have to remember Tuomas and Tarja were school friends long before Nightwish. When played live, Tuomas has the vocals cut off in his ears pieces, although you know he knows them. The original premise of the song was Edgar Allen Poe's the Pit and the Pendulum, which talks of the power of fear and insanity. You know it still effects him as his band mates stand close to him at the close of the song. Tuomas has said he committed suicide in a song so he didn't have to do it in real life.

he Poet and the Pendulum is the first song in Nightwish's 6th Album, Dark Passion Play. This song is one of Tuomas' most personal songs, dealing with Tarja Turunen leaving the band and his feelings of it. The song at its time was the longest Nightwish song in duration,and is now the second longest song only to The Greatest Show on Earth. Clocking at around 14 minutes. The song is divided into 5 sections, each with different themes and styles being applied: White Lands of Empathica, Home, Pacific, Dark Passion Play, and Mother and Father. There is a demo version by Marco Hietala, with even darker lyrics.

Come on people! Did you even watch this til the end, before giving your dislike? I know it's not optimal way to listen to something new, when you are distracted by your phone, but people has their lifes to live, and this is just for fun. And are you sure she was texting, but rather looking for information about this song? Anyway, loosen up. I think this was good reaction. This song is indeed dark and powerful, and still very beautiful. Those lines like "On the shore, we sat and hoped, under the same pale moon, whose guiding light chose you all"...that is what really happened. They never supposed to be anything big, just acoustic mood music. But that moon had different plans. For me this song is very important, because I'm an old fan (since 1998), and I abandoned them when they fired Tarja. When I first heard this song with Floor, I even teared up a little...and you know (Finnish) men don't cry (so it must have been those onion cutting Ninja's...once again). Anyway, this song brought all those old memories, seeing their rise to the "glory" with Tarja, waiting next albums etc.
@oo.llpee.74574 жыл бұрын
So, I indeed abandoned them for 7 years. Not because I was angry, but because I didn't like the sound of their new singer. Their sound changed too much for me. Yes, I was angry at first, but I think I pretty soon realized, that it was going to happen in anyway. Tarja was already told she was leaving, and their chemistry had gone a long before. I still am angry about the way they did it. It was very immature, and they at once made sure, that we can't see Tarja ever with them again. Not even on one song on festivals.

Loved it. I do wish people would stop insisting that others “do the research” before listening to it though. Every song ever written has an important backstory, which for the most part goes unknown by the listener. It’s art, meant to be interpreted. It isn’t homework. Knowing the backstory to a song is cool, but never mandatory.

Story: personal biography lyrics by Tuomas Holopainen (Tuomas formed Nigthwish with first vocalist Tarja Turunen). Nightwish is very succesfully with operatic voice of Tarja. Below writing story (not for me): bad communication between Tuomas and fans of Nightwish, after Tarja too early forced leave of Nightwish. Fans of Nightwish anger to Tuomas. "You should have researched the background story to this song. The song would have made so much more sense. You are not even close with what this song is about. The song is about the backlash they (mostly Tuomas) received about the firing of Tarja Turunen (their very first vocalist) who was a close friend of him since kindergarden. The problems started when she started dating her current husband. who convinced her that she should go solo because she was to good for them. She also started to refuse to play in venues below a certain amount people. This caused more and more tentions between her and the rest the band. At some point it was decided they would record one more album and she would then leave Nightwish. However the tensions got so high that they fired her at the end of their last tour (the end of era live dvd was recorded at this show). They handed her a letter directly after the show was finished. They however also published the letter on-line (not the most ellegant way to handle this) with the intention to explain to the fans on why they thought a clean break was necesarry. The negative backlash by the press and fans was enormous and mostly directed to Tuomas (the founder and creative mind behind the band). This threw Tuomas in to horrible depression and he no longer saw a future for the band he put so much effort into. He was actually considering suicide but knew this would hurt his family and close friends. He decided to commit suicide artiscally in this song. The closing section of this song is about his parents who took him back in and put him back together again. The song is very emotional to Tuomas and you will see the band members check in on him whenever this song is played. Don't feel bad you will never be able to figure this out from just listening to the lyrics." See: Tarja with Nightwish: Phantom of the Opera - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qn2VZqWYo9uAatE (after this concert forced Tarja to leave Nightwish). Second vocalist of Nightwish is Anette Olzon, but voice of Anette is pop/rock style - not operatic (this song in album with voice of Anette). With operatic voice of third vocalist of Nightwish Floor Jansen this song is in my TOP 5 rock ballads (with Deep Purple - Child in Time, Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven, Styx - Renegade, Metallica - One).

haha..i am afraid the version of the breakup presented is very one sided and has already been thoroughly discredited by Tarja's husband....Tarja was and lack of decent accommodations, thus the need for a personal manager to fight for her concerns...( she had numerous far better offers to join other bands but stayed with Nightwish) ... in 2004, she finally announced a solo career but was asked to stay on, to which she foolishly agreed provided they assume short tours, better accommodations...nothing changed so her manager began to insist on the agreed to terms ...they bulked and stopped responding to his emails (all documented) ....then rewarded her by trashing her name in the open letter which incensed Tarja fans, industry and critics ... thus, the supersized wedgie for Tuomas...

Amazing and so blowminding :). from the same concert: Floor Jansen as guest with Epica in "sancta terra". Only 1 word: Epic!!!!

I love how Tuomas borrowed images from The Pit and The Pendulum, a short story written in 1842 by Edgar Allan Poe. The story deals with the psychological torment of a prisoner in the Spanish Inquisition who is publicly tortured and executed for opposing the Catholic Church. He finds himself in a rat-infested, darkened room with slippery sloped floors leading to a Pit, with a swinging Pendulum above. The Pit signifies Death, the Pendulum represents Time and the sloped floors, rats and darkness symbolise Fear. An awesome adaptation to music. Genius! The protagonist of the story opposed the Catholic Church as he despised God for taking away his birth mother, adopted mother and wife with plague and disease. I personally believe that Toumas's torment wasn't because he fired Tarja from the band but because his so-called fans publicly tortured and executed him for doing it the way he did. I also believe the score was arranged into 5 separate chapters to signify the 5 stages of grief. I agree with others here. A masterpiece such as this deserves your full attention. This song is very emotional and resonates with so many people. Please consider your audience more.

A lot of music gives me goosebumps, maybe even goosebumps on goosebumps. This one plainly tears me up and tears me apart. May I suggest Eye Of Ra (Universe)? Warning, depending on your musical preference, you may recognize some people. Link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZXGgGOJmM6Hi7s
