I bought this CD when I was about 13, and then got a copy on vinyl (which I really miss now) a year or two later when a lot of my CDs were waterlogged and I just lost interest in them..... I played the hell out of both. I think my friend in NJ has my copy on CD. No idea what happened to my LP... I don't remember anymore. This is the band that got me into riot grrl and female punk as a whole. It just opened a whole new window for me. Bikini Kill and Lisa Carver's fanzine Rollerderby entered my life at the same time, and as a male who identified more with females at the time, it just hit. I'm happy it kind of fell into my lap... And to those who mention how tight the band sounds here compared to their first couple of years, I agree completely, and that's probably what drew me to the album so much wben it came out. When I wanted some chaos and noise, I'd put Pussywhipped on... but this album was perfection to me. I have to say The Singles is another great example of how much they came together as time went on, even if it's not an actual album. Before it had a vinyl copy I had the CD and played it to death until I eventually got each of the 7" from it. It is one of the best compiation albums I've ever heard and I almost consider it one of their albums at this point. If the CD Version... is a 2-for-1, The Singles covers even more ground and even flows well. I'm happy it saw a RSD release. It's just as tight as this album is, but has more of an edge still. I still think it's their best overall work. This band was one of those flashes in a pan that made and changed history. I used to think about what they would have done had they stayed together, since they were working on demos when they broke up (which I've ALWAYS wanted to hear a glimpse of, since I've been forever-curious how they could possibly follow this album up and what would come next... and then they broke up before those demos went anywhere). I can't cry sour milk, though. The Julie Ruin LP that I bought wound up being the main reason I got into sampling, drum machines, and 4track recording. It was a major influence on me, and to this day, I still use samplers, drum machines, and 4tracks. And it was a fantastic album and for such a shift from BK, it just worked. I saw Le Tigre twice and Julie Ruin band and all of those shows were great. Particularly Le Tigre. I also caught one of Tori Vail's various bands, I want to say The Old Haunts?.... It was a small show and I got to chat with her for a minute. She's awesome. Not to go on forever and ever. But this band's influence on me in so many ways still carries on to this day. Listening to this right now brings back so many memories.... I could keep going on with stories forever, but I'll cutoff now and just say that for the brief period they were activce they did more for music than Aerosmith has done in something like 75 years.

Have any suggestions for someone trying to help a child who wants to get into mixing, sampling etc? Where to start? Apps... websites to mess around with? Equipment?
@computersnevergoonstrikeАй бұрын
@@Anastasia.03 This is odd.... I had typed up a reply, and it seemingly has disappeared. I'm going to try again.... I am not a big person when it comes to DAW (Digital Audio Workstation/s).... I used them when I was younger, but I learn and am able to use hands-on equipment much better, and, admittedly, I am a gearhead.... I trade equipment a lot, and stuff is going in and out of my arsenal now and then. My first sampler was a Korg Electribe model which I used for a long time until trading it to someone who became a really close friend, and got me back into synths. I mention the Electribe because it's basically a music workstation with the ability to sample included. Each model does things a little differently than the others, with some specializing in a certain area i.e. drum beats. I am not as familiar with the different models anymore-- I asked for a sampler and guy at guitar center sold me it in 2004, so this is 20 years ago. I would say it's advanced for beginners and I recommend using different things that are easier to manage and navigate (while also having more options to choose from...) instead of diving into a full-on workstation. But it's all a matter of how you want to learn and create things. It's definitely worth looking into the electribe series, but it is a lot more than just a sampler. I love the Korg Volca Sample II (I own two of the original I**)... it is part of a series of small synthesizers with a lot of guts, at a nice budget price... the Volca series. A Sample II would probably cost about $120 new. The only difference between the sample I and II is the II has 8MB of memory, while the I has 4.. and there is a usb source on the sample II. While 4-8MB of memory likely seems very small, you have 99 sample slots to work with, and having limited memory can be a good thing, as it teaches you to manipulate sound files (samples) to make them smaller before putting them on the sampler, You can do this by altering things like pitch and tempo within audacity. Then, once on the sampler in a smaller, maybe sped-up (shorter) file, you import the sample onto the Volca Sample and can adjust the pitch/tempo/whatever on the sampler itself, making it the normal speed in which it was originally sampled at (or otherwise, if you choose). I've taken 10-second samples and squeezed them down to under 2 in order to make them fit, and then I just adjust what's needed in the Volca's settings These things are worth learning about when you're beginning with samplers, even if they're kind of common little tricks. The Sample (and volca series as a whole) can be very easy to work with... Once you learn how to use one Volca, the others are pretty similar to navigate.. For taking samples before importing them to the volca, I would recommend the free program audacity. It's great for editing or adjusting anything i.e. the tempo or pitch trick I mentioned above. I also use audacity to mixdown and occasionally cleanup recordings I've completed. If you're at all familiar with CoolEditPro, which was free to the world thanks to a crack (Peter Quistgard- Never forget!...), was kind of like Audacity but not as mice. Audacity is a great program to have and it's free. One of my problems with DAW, such as Ableton, is that it's software and costs as much as buying a really solid synth I can touch.... Other equipment I use and would recommend.... I think a lot of the Volca series is worth looking into, and it's nice to be able to use them all together, or at least have the option. I prefer 2-3 at once but it's fun to get them all cranking sometimes. The Korg Minilogue is a polyphonic analog synth that can work with the volcas, and the Korg monologue is a monophonic synth that also works with them. Both are smaller keyboards, but have a lot of nice features and are great to begin with, imo. I started with an MS2000 and am still learning how to use it..... I wish I had began on a monolgue or minilogue. I own the monologue, but both of them are useful for different reasons. Smaller keyboards too, but still very nice. The microkorg is the ms2000 but condensed, and also a nice option. I also mentioned a special midi cable... To split singular midi channel notes from the volca sample to the 10 midi channels with a midi keyboard or synthesizer via midi, you will need this special cable (or perhaps a homebrew that's out there but I'm not sure if that alone will work), The main flaw the volca sample has is that midi does not really work in the sensible way at all....but this cable fixes all of that. They do run a bit more than I wish, but it's completely worth it, and made using my midi keyboard with my volca containing the voice samples (I forgot to mention**-- i own two of the sample I; I doubled up instead of getting the sample II, and use one as a drum machine and the other one programmed w. the rk-002 for voices and longer samples I control via a midi keyboard, not so much for sequencing or patterns like i do with the one i use as a drum machine). It's a smart midi cable and has features with so many other devices on the market, and can be used to unlock features on them like it does w/ the Sample.. I definitely recommend investing in one, or just keeping an eye out for a used listing on eBay. Sometimes people sell the Sample with it.... that's how I got my second one, actually. The sample also has a ton of built-in features such as step sequencing, patterns, and so much more, but you can create things on there with al of the samples, so it kind of is like a tiny workstation in a way.... I like to run different things into effect pedals and processors as well, but that stuff is kind of user preference. I record using audacity if going directly to my computer, or w/ two analog 4tracks made by tascam. I bought them when you could find a 4track on craigslist for $40-60 but now it's nuts how much they go for. I can't say that I would buy one now if I hadn't invested when the market wasn't so insane since there's so many cheap and free ways to record, so I just say go with the cheaper routes first, and if they really get into it, 4track are awesome and fun to learn how to use in their own right. Like I said in my first reply, the Julie Ruin LP and its insert got me into 4tracks kind of.... I already had used my friend's, but it made me go out and buy one. I can help out more, but jeez, I feel like I gave too much info! If you want to chat or have any questions about gear, or you're looking for something morte specific, I'd love to help out if I can :) I have some videos of my stuff when it was all setup in my music studio, thru the mixer and everything. I'm just tinkering around on them but the sample is in my videos multiples times, with a bunch of random stuff. Please keep me updated on how it goes! :)

My favourite Bikini Kill album! Ridiculously tight drumming, especially on the title track!
@computersnevergoonstrike Жыл бұрын
She's seriously one of the more underrated drummers of all-time. At least in the punk genre. Her drumming on their early work sounds like somebody who is still learning, but she really figured it out fast. I love her drumming on some other things she's done as well.... Her style was a huge part of Bikini Kill, though. It's one of the best things about this album, and it's just as good on every track on The Singles. The snare rolls just sound fantastic to me...
