Tia, trust me, Italian is DIFFICULT, the grammar is very complex and the verb tenses are infinite and you HAVE TO use them correctly, especially because here in Italy we have very high expectations, and you'll basically always be corrected by someone. Oh and most Italians have difficulties speaking their own language, you have no idea how many people don't know how and when to use the "congiuntivo" tense!

Italian is a difficult language, that's true. But if Italians themselves don't know how and when to use the congiuntivo it's just because they haven't studied enough :)

this because we italians use dialects, rome have his dialect, naples his dialects , much of south italian dialects are considered languages for unesco, like neapolitan and sicilian, so italians speak 2 languages and it's hard when we speak in italian because dialects are very different to italian

Of course it's not, but the fact that people don't study it doesn't take away the fact that Italian is probably the most difficult language out there!

I'd say one of the most. Don't forget about Russian and friends and all those Chinese, Japanese etc. In my opinion every language has it's difficulties. English can be really tough too, just try to read Nabokov's Lolita, for example.

It's more than 40 years that I live in Italy-and everything said in this video is SO true-I don't notice any more. In my first years here, I DID notice much more-and Tia has done a great job of describing these differences! "Eventually" omg that's tricky for us! hahaha we translate it like "eventualmente" but it actually means "alla fine" Another thing is the word order. I'm trying to learn it at University but I can't understand it, I know that's SOV but I just can't :D But as an English learner, I really appreciate when someone corrects me if I make mistakes!

My personal opinion is that Italians have a good percentage of possibility to learn perfectly English, as well for the pronunciation. On the contrary for whoever is trying to learn Italian getting the perfect pronunciation for all the words, is impossible.

Joseph Andrew Maliberan that's not a reliable statistic, the majority of Italians just do not practice enough time, it's very usefull to listen interviews and to watch movies in English, making yourself "used to" the language and getting a proper pronunciation, Italians don't do that.

exact, in italian tv and cinema ,english and american movies have dubbing in italian, not in original english language, and so it's hard, and we use italian just like a second language because dialects are the first , and dialects here in italy are very different each other , so english became us 3 language. it's hard but we try

Cara Tia, ti scrivo in italiano per evitare errori d'Inglese :) Le tue chiaccherate sono molto divertenti perchè sei molto simpatica e soprattutto perchè si vede che tu ami entrambe le lingue ed entrambe le culture; credo per le loro caratteristiche e peculiarità. Come una madre ama tutti i suoi figli per quanto diversi; ciascuno per i propri pregi e difetti. Sono certo che nessuna persona intelligente si offenderà per le tue parole sempre amorevoli e gentili. Anche io amo molto l'Inglese. E la cultura che vi 'sta sotto' :) . Ho frequentato 5 anni in una scuola di 'modello British' per così dire; molti anni fa. Mi rimane una capacità espressiva minima e molto "arrugginita" ma l'Inglese è una comunque una mia passione:) Le persone come te sono il futuro del Mondo perchè con il loro amore per le culture e le persone vanno oltre tuttr le barriere. This video was really useful! But italian IS a hard language... it's so hard that most of us can't even speak it correctly :v We have 18 different verbal tenses and all of them are coniugated differently, so with some calculations, you need to know 18x6 (tenses x pronouns) x all the italian verbs...

Almost all the mistakes you mention are the so called "false friends" or falsi amici... I have lived for some time in Pennsylvania, and I did hear "mistakes" 5 and 6 there... people saying "losing time", and also double negatives "did not do nothing".. well, Bruce Springsteen also says it all the time in his lyrics :)

Honestly you can't compare tenses in english and italian, italian has more and more complicated tenses than english, and most of irregular verbs won't be easy like "break,broke,broken"... Most linguists agree that languages are infact more or less difficult to learn onbjectively, english resulted one of the easiest and italian resulted to be on average while the most difficult turned out to be polish.

You forgot a really common one: "for and to". I used to get it mixed up a lot. For example, "For me she is beautiful" instead of "to me she is beautiful". Even "I'm ready for go to Milan" instead "I'm ready to go to Milan"

Utile come video, alle volte ci sono parole che in inglese e italiano si somigliano, ma in altri casi proprio no. Mi viene in mente "pretend" che in inglese è "fingere" e in italiano a volte lo traducono con "pretendere" -__- oppure "Actually" che viene tradotto come "attualmente" XD Che impiastri! Ma a parte questo, anche gli americani (o stranieri) fanno errori comuni. Anche noi abbiamo molti modi e tempi verbali, ma all'inizio penso sia quasi normale usare solo l'infinito. Come dici tu, sono due lingue diverse e difficili allo stesso modo. Uh, oppure la differenza tra maschile e femminile... il femminile soprattutto viene dimenticato. A parte ciò è bello imparare cose nuove :D

Nice video! Very useful! You can use 'POTERE' when you're - or you're not - allowed to do something; or when you have the means, or the will, to do that. You can use 'RIUSCIRE' when you mean something you have - or don't have - the means or the will to accomplish, or when you phisycally can - or can't - do something (I can't breath = Non riesco a respirare). 'Riuscire' and 'be able to' or 'manage' are very similar, I think.

Italians are poorely educated in foreign languages, but none of us (I'm italian) actually think eng is hard. We just are lazy. Hai un buonissimo italiano! Comunque "Actually": per noi somiglia"attualmente" cioè "Ora come ora" e non "veramente". Per confrontare due elementi ci viene da dire "Confronting", ma in inglese è una rissa, nonostante ci sia in italiano il verbo "Comparare" che però è meno usato nel linguaggio comune. Sto giusto cercando spunti di ripasso perché ho finito da poco un corso in inglese, I like your channel and the video part with tons of mothers and fathers made me laugh!

Yes, but if you meet someone german, his eng probabily will be better than any italian's :) (I my experience, especially because I know a lot of italians and the few who are better eng speaker than me, studied it at the university. My eng is not that good, but for there is almost pro :)

Esatto, ma anche il doppiaggio che da noi impera (e alcune cose, tipo Scrubs, sono meglio doppiate) non aiuta. Tipo: io l'ho imparato passivamente l'inglese, poi di recente ho seguito un corso in lingua e sono migliorata ma già solo con i telefilm in lingua originale ero un drago rispetto a qualunque delle mie amiche che non lo abbia fatto all'università. Hm, questo dipende dall'espressione: "to have an argument" è chiaramente diverso da "avere un argomento", ma "the argument of a function", oppure "the argument isn't correct" sono traducibili correttamente con "l'argomento di una funzione" e "l'argomento non è corretto" (quando si parla di argomento logico o filosofico).

The Italian word "stage" actually is taken from French. Many Italians don't know that, and think it's an English word, but it has nothing to do with it.

Because in english a double negative equals a positive: I did not do nothing - means I did something. Not considered proper english by your average elementary school teacher, but it could be used on purpose for dramatic effect. This video helped me too, I'm trying to learn Italian on my own and I was just wondering where subjects go sometimes :D

Sleeping Panda LOL, you're not too far off, though!! Among the younger generation, teenagers like myself, we respond to "thank you" with something close to what you say, which is "no problem." "Don't mention it" is also a pretty common response, from me personally. This is because it sounds more humble, doing something simple should't be worth much gratitude. I don't say "you're welcome" like older generations would because things like holding a door open feel like simple manners, and it is definitely the same for many others my age, or at least in the city since I live in New York. Please don't feel embarrassed!! ☺

"Five mothers and ten fathers". In Rome we say as an insult "figlio di una cooperativa": son of a cooperative company. It's like "son of a b...." but with a larger family. :P

"Sprecare il mio tempo" si può benissimo dire :) like "Sto sprecando il mio tempo con te" o "Odio sprecare il mio tempo per queste cazzate". it does mean the same as "perdere il proprio tempo"

Sorry but English doesn't directly discend from German :). English happens to be a Germanic language. Germanic tribes (not Germans) moved from nowadays Netherlands to British Islands, more or less on the 5th century. That fought and won against Celts making them the dominant culture although they also experienced 2 important breakdowns, affecting the language: the Viking and the French occupations.

english vocabulary have 50% of latin and greek words arrived in england from french, all similar italian and english words have latin and greek roots, like importance=importanza, mortal=mortale, infinito=infinity, house=casa( from latin domus), school=from greek skola, etc. english for us italians is just difficult for pronunciation and grammar laws that they are germanic, but for vocabulary (from latin vocabulus) it's similar for half

Very true, and because of this I have a larger vocabulary than I would normally have when I speak in Italian.

This is going to be soooo useful. I'm pretty much content with my semifluent english, i don't make those mistakes anymore but a while ago i used to! All due to the fact that i'm costantly watching films in the original language and youtube videos ofc. My mates tho... And my teacher too, which if you ask me creeps me out even more, because i'm supposed to learn the correct way from her. Gosh i lost my train of thoughts, i guess what i was trying to say is that many and most of the people i know makes those mistakes and i never correct them because then they'll just say i'm being the "Miss I Know Everything" whereas it helps much more!

While English is a "Germanic" language it is not a direct descendent of German language. There is quite a bit of Latin which came into the English language from the Norman conquest of England. Lastly if you are trying to teach us English usage and phraseology, you are speaking too fast for anyone to understand you. I am perfectly fluent in English with 100% comprehension, and you are almost impossible to understand. Slow down!

No english is not an easy language ... you simply don't have to conjugate verbs... you don't have to inflect nouns... because they don't change while switching genders and quantities... You don't inflect articles... which we do ... That's all ... Besides ... english doesn't come from German... English comes from latin just like every other language in places where Romans established their colonies... Italians won't ever punish you in any way for not speaking a proper italian or for your awkward accent... Ppl from Uk will... go and try ... i did. Frankly speaking i watched a couple of videos here in the channel and i find almost all of them somewhat racist and insulting towards italian ppl...even if the message is packed with smiles and a cute voice.... We eat too much cake in the morning ... our meals are too heavy ... we use hands a lot while talking... we give you less personal space.... I don't even think the insults are intended but it comes out like the speaker has a sense of superiority while talking about Italians... Our meals are heavy because food is yet another form of communication here... and the idea of a guest possibly eating less than he wants is practically a nightmare for us.... deal with it .... there are worse things in the world to complain about. We use the bidet..... yes... forgive us for not wanting to scratch our asshole every now and then because it's not clean... another bad habit to tolerate.... We are eager to communicate.... so we use hands and body a lot... while this may be annoying i really don't think it hurts... and it becomes more tolerable if you think of it a sign of how much we care about letting our message pass properly... I also read complaints about our diet in general... Our diet??? Srsly??? I mean in the usa obesity is litterally KILLING ppl and it's not less of a problem in Uk... In italy fat ppl are quite rare ... you noticed that yourself... I could go on... but i guess you get my point... also forgive me for my english... or don't .... i really ccl... cya

This is so funny and so true! I am Dutch but I spoke almost only English when I studied in Rome for half a year. I was totally messing up my English with Italian too. I just said it wrong in English (fun/funny/after/later) on purpose because then the italians would understand it better, but now i keep making these mistakes myself ;p It is just really hard to explain English to the italians sometimes, but i think you did a super good job on that!

I would often here Italians say "where will you go?" That is to say, "Where ARE you going?" LOL I just smile and answer. Definitely also heard "I like" without adding "it" to the end. Great video!

Hi Tia! As a Italian, I thought I could try to help you understand the difference between "riuscire" and "potere". "Riuscire" actually means "to manage to", to be finally able to do something you struggled at, or to be able to do something that is noticeably hard . In the negative form ("non riuscire"), it means to be not able to do something, because of lack of certain skills or because it's physically impossible . EXAMPLES: "Sono finalmente riuscito a passare l'esame" (I finally managed to pass the exam) "Se voglio, riesco a correre per due ore consecutive senza fermarmi" (If I want, I can run two hours straight)" "Non sono riuscito ad arrivare in orario perchè c'era troppo traffico" (I couldn't get there on time, because of the heavy traffic) "Potere" instead, has a "softer" meaning, it means to be able to do something, but not necessarily to try to or want to. In the negative form ("non potere"), means more like "not wanting" to do something. EXAMPLES "Se voglio, posso commettere un crimine"(If I want, I can commit a crime. (There is nothing that physically prevents me to commit a crime, but still I don't want to)). "Non sono potuto uscire dalla classe prima della fine della lezione"(I couldn't get out of the classroom before the end of the lesson). "I cani non possono entrare in una farmacia" ("dogs can't enter a pharmacy", (even if there is nothing that physically prevents them to, they still can't)). "Questa sera non posso uscire perchè domani ho un esame"("Tonight I can't get out because tomorrow I have an exam.(There is nothing that prevents me to get out, but I don't want to)) If you still have questions, just reply to my comment :)

some of the common mistakes you talked about, such as the double negatives, we actually study them at school but most of the students don't study so they make mistakes. Also the majority of adult people didn't study english when younger so now they can't speak it. The difference between "riuscire" and "potere" is easy enough, though. "Riuscire" is more akin to "manage" as far as meaning goes-- like, the meaning of "manage" and "be able to" is basically the same (=succeeding/not succeeding in doing something), but with slightly different connotations.

You know, i really get the fact that it's hard to learn a new language, 'cause when you talk in english sometimes you build a phrase as if it were italian. I find it really cute and i actually have the same problem. Not only I'm italian and have a LOT of english friends all over internet and I talk a lot with them throughout the day via skype, I also live in germany with my parents (they too are italian, so I basically talk to them only in italian). That means my personal life is split in 3 languages. It can be really frustrating but it feels rewarding when you can handle it. Btw, loved your video
