I feel like the pressure people feel to do everything at once and to have all your supplies that are listed in your study material, stems from the education system and back to school shopping, and how they expect students to, not only have all the supplies, but also learn several different subjects, in a class room setting. So your brain is kind of wired to that study technique, where you have to study all these things at once every day, and do the homework that comes with it every day, to succeed.

For me, i have this constant fear that im doing everything wrong, my protections arent strong enough, what if i accidentally let a spirit into my house, is my intuition strong enough, how do i know that this is what my intuition is telling me, etc. im still working on my intuition and doing my best to not overthink to where it hinders me yet at the same time not doing something absentmindedly. for now, i guess i'm reading up on lunar magick more (currently the centre of my craft) and trying to read as much as i can before i do anything else. the most i do are rituals during the four major moon phases, tarot/oracle readings, and some intention work. its a process and its a lot and i feel like i'm playing too safe and staying too much in my comfort zone? idk haha

What I did to ease my anxiety is I just layer my protections. I have my wards, but I also have several layers of protection spells. If it gets through one, it won't get through the others. Also, knowing and doing research into spirits is helpful. If you have it pre-written and well understood, when the time comes to use it, it will be much easier for you.

A big mistake that I have made so far is when I will read books instead of applying the things said in them to my craft, I would just read about them and forget. So now i’m re-reading all of the books I have on witchcraft and it’s really helpful so far !

So far my worst mistake is not being specific. I asked for more money as I was struggling financially and someone hit the back of my car. I got a lot of money because it was their fault but man did it hurt me, especially since the car was picked by my grandpa who passed away a few years ago. I've learned since to be specific. 😅

This is a really personal and odd one, but one thing I regret is doing spells I found on the internet. Pinterest, TikTok, etc. the internet as a whole. Since day one of my craft, I hated spell recipes and wanted to craft my own spells but I didn’t feel like a real witch, so I made myself follow some spell recipes online. Turns out that for me specifically, spells only really tend to work if I made my own spells from the ground up instead of finding one on the internet and using it.

I did an anti-anxiety spell I found in a KZbin video, as my first spell without any research and no protections. Additionally, I gave an offering to the fae in my first week of practicing without any protection. Luckily nothing bad came of either events, but I’ve since learnt from my idiocy and now have extensive wards and personal protections on and around me at all times and I do heavy research before attempting anything.

I guess this is a sign (more like a reminder ig) for me to slow things down, and keep only doing my crystals, my tiny full moon rituals, practicing tarot, and researching. The sabbats will have to wait until the basics are part of my normal life. I've started witchcraft like 3 years ago but because I wanted to do too much, I ended up doing nothing at all and stopped witchcraft. That intro always makes me smile. I guess for me big mistakes were assuming if something is in a published book it was well researched and correct....oops. Not trusting my own judgement and putting too much stock in outside sources and assuming experienced meant wise. I also approached spellcraft pretty half asssed, on the spot with stuff from books with very little understanding of what the point of all the stuff was for in the first place. Also not being completely open and honest with those I should have been early on. That came out of alot of shame and fear that always had me halfway in the broom closet even when I claimed to be "out". Oh and believing I learned everything I needed to know. I know now the more you learn the more you realize just how much you don't know and still have to learn. I am more confident now but I know what I know and I have a pretty good idea of when I am out of my depth these days.

I think for me so far the biggest mistakes were trying to learn everything at once and then also automatically assuming working with a love deity would heal my trauma without me putting any actual work in. I was very excited when I first started learning more and I didn't want to limit myself to just one path or label so I tried learning a variety of things at once. This basically ended up causing me a lot of stress cuz I was overwhelmed with all the information and I didn't have as much of a concrete grasp on what I was learning. I only had surface information. As for the second one, it was basically that I still hadn't accepted that it was my job to heal my own trauma even when others had caused it. It didn't seem fair (it's still not really fair but that's just how life is) and I felt that others, like my therapist, were responsible for telling me what was wrong and then how to fix it. I didn't want to put the work in myself and this belief carried over when I started interacting with deities

Love this story about you thinking Bastet was reaching out to you. The funny thing is she approached me directly within weeks of me starting my practice to help me with the protection element because she was like "ahhhhh this poor baby witchling is so sacred and needs help". I don't actively "work" with her but I have a beautiful relationship with her and dedicate time to honouring her daily. She's honestly the best, I adore her and love having her as my patroness.

I put up an altar to Aphrodite with no protections--in my bedroom. It was a grateful altar, since I'd just gotten engaged and wanted to thank her, so there were a lot of offerings and respect, but still. That's a lot of energy to bring into a bedroom!

That's interesting - i had my altar on the living room book case but people kept setting drinks on it and i had to move it to my room. I work with Gaia only for the most part and see my room altar as a protection and noy an issue but i keep my sabbat/other deity altar in the hall. I was nervous about a bedroom altar at first but once it sprung up over time, I have no issues. I was warned altars are a beacon of spiritual beings and all but my altar feels very protective. I think an altar can be anything though, people create altars and don't mean to. I think its fine. But we create our own reality

Also another thing was jumping into angel work as a beginner witch. An archangel contacted me and while they were indeed the actual Archangel and he helped me out with my craft, I had and still do have so much to unpack regarding religion (as angels are often associated with Christianity) and my childhood trauma. I’m so glad that things didn’t turn for the worst but I’ve learned my lesson. I enjoy working with archangels but I think it will be several years before I can work with them again just needing time to 1) disassociate angels with Christianity alone, and 2) work on my trauma relating to religion.

What I was saying though is that because of the cult I was raised in (SDA in case you were curious) combined with the fact that within the western world angels are USUALLY associated with Christianity, doing angel work triggered my trauma a lot and made me feel uncomfortable. I know it's my calling later on, but it's not something I can do at this moment. And as a side note, you can't just meditate trauma away. It takes years of seeing therapists and even medicating.

They all had Greek and Norse deities and out of nowhere the name Thoth popped into my head. I honestly don’t even know if I was aware of this deity prior to this. And I was like nah this can’t be. But I kept getting signs so my sister, much longer practicing, taught me how to vet, and it was immediate responses like… damn. So in my first week I discovered Thoth is my patron deity and he’s very much like a guiding teacher. I’m also pretty sure he’s been around me for a VERY long time and was just waiting for me to wake up.

My mistake was feeling I needed to force myself to practice when I was in an unsafe space. I always felt guilty about not practicing as much when my other friends were doing more but in reality, it was a good choice since I was in an abusive situation and I highly doubt I would have been able to do much there without it backfiring or worse. 5 years later I'm still at the basics but I'm happily taking my time with it in a healthy manner in a healthy environment!

I remember going on a sketchy looking forum for spells as a beginner (it legitimately had spells that claimed to make you “levitate” and stuff). That’s probably one of the most embarrassing mistakes I made, and also trying to do a love spell that backfired. I've been into witchcraft for 3 years. The first 2 years, I was only discovering it, reading about it on the internet, being interested but never reading books or even practicing, it was more of a "oh yeah I know about this thing called witchcraft thing". And the 3rd year, I've really started to get into it. The thing is, I have a really demanding job, with demanding hours (hey, emergency veterinarian !!), and I don't get to practice or read everyday about witchcraft. But I've learnt to appreciate the moments when I can. i've been into tarot and runes lately, reading about the history of witchcraft, cleansing, and I've just deciced to allow myself to take it real slow and be gentle with myself. Because if I rush myself to be quicker, I know I'll eventually become sick of it and view it as a "duty" rather than a life practice. Thought that could help someone out there !

After many many discussions with native practitioners, not really discussions more like listening to their opinions, I felt okay using white sage as long as I was either growing it myself or purchasing it from a native person directly and as long as I was clear about the fact that I was not smudging. I’ve never learned the ritual of smudging so I never refer to it as that, it’s smoke cleansing. But I still use white sage when I have ethical means of acquiring it (there’s a mother and son who sell white sage at my local market, they’re native)

My biggest mistake was not knowing that there are things that are closed. Doing workings that don’t belong to me with no protection at all with my kids in the house! I had no idea. Anyway, thankfully nothing bad happened. I learned that very fast.

I work with 3 deities. I identified them well at first ( really characteristic signs, and MASSIVE manifestations and sincronicities). I did magic work to vanish imposters. And a thing I must say is that it's really peaceful and good vibin'. I was literally crying for help last year and they listened and reached out. At first I was really afraid and nervous thinking it could be a negative entity. Basically, last year I did more cleansing than in all past years. But it happen and I'm really grateful. I did a lot (a ton) of research to be sure. Now I'm really happy with my deitiy work.

I learned that I need to protect myself when getting into spells too, always good to protect yourself. What's funny is I did a spell last October then about a month later I felt another deity or spirit to make himself present to me and be around me when I was younger. I kept finding signs of him/keep finding signs too and I also started working with another deity before the one that showed up too.

My grandma recently passed away and I have a little sort of alter thing in my room for her where i burn a candle every night and now i'm worried im going to accidentally attract other things into my room. Well at its heart witchcraft was winging it - we have all these rules now people talk about but one of my friends said we create our own reality. If you think about it, Catholics light candles for the dead and don't have any protection except usually being in a church (hallowed ground). So if you put intention into protection, many believe you'll be protected. But your reality is yours and if you don't believe it, nothing anyone tells you will change it

I think with a lot of people it could go one way or the other when they first start out. Either jumping in too quickly or being way to scared to make mistakes so they never explore. Yes it’s important to research and fully understand things but it’s okay to make mistakes that’s how you learn.

I am an asian guy who is into magick, the same kind of stuff you are interested in, not eastern magick practices like Taoism, although I am interested in learning more since it is linked to my heritage, but I don't know about it enough to be interested. Anyways, I know about witchcraft since 2007, but didn't truly get into it until 2017, I did dabble into it around 2012, then I stopped until 2017. In 2012, I did some candle work, but at the time, I didn't know that you need to anoint oil and have herbs on the candles to make it effective, all I thought it was about lighting a candle with the corresponding color and focus on my intention on it. I lit a red votive candle on a picture of a girl I liked at the time, also, I brought a love mojo bag from my local occult shop. Mistake I made at the time was not feeding the mojo bag. But I did have a taste of what the magick would be if I knew better at the time. You see, the girl I lit the candle for, was in fact interested in me for about a month, right after I brought the mojo bag and lit the candle. Before I did all that, she was cold, no matter how hard I tried to ask her out, she was only interested in being friends, I even tried to hang out with her and her friends for multiple study sessions, but she still didn't budge. Then all this pushed me to light the candle and brought the mojo bag, and in that one month, she didn't hesitate to agree to hang out with me, I helped with house shopping, went out on dates, it was not much, but definitely an improvement. Now that I looked back on this, I think it was not the candle, since I did not "dress" it, it was the mojo bag, however, it only lasted a month because of my mistake of not feeding the mojo bag, it died of "hunger", and the love spell died with it. Now let's talk about 2017, this is when my interest in magick started up again. At this time, I no longer follows the path of Wicca, instead, I started studying the way of being a folk magickian, which is a generalized term for anyone that does magick with herbs and other spiritual stuff, I don't call it witchcraft anymore, but it is still the same thing, just a slightly different path, with different rules. I brought a few poppets for yet another girl that I liked, at the time, I am still learning, so along with the poppet, I also brought a whole bunch of herbs, which included love herbs, as well as domination herbs. Now, here is my second and third mistake, not putting the herbs inside the poppet (I put rose quartz chips inside poppets), as well as mixing love herbs with dominations herbs (big mistake). Traditional way of doing poppets is filling it with herbs, not crystals, and always feed it. Where did I put my herbs you ask? I put them in a zip lock bag, rolled it up, and thought this can "feed' the poppets. Silly me lol, doesn't work like that. Also, domination/corecive herbs do not mix with love herbs, unless you are trying to dominate a lover in an already existing relationship, but the girl I was doing this on barely knows me. My intention was to make her come close to me and actually start a relationship. I no longer have those poppets, I threw them away in the trash, and burned the herbs. Starting in 2018, I started buying my supplies from Lucky Mojo, at first, I brought a whole bunch of sachet powders, this was me trying to tame an control a female boss I had at the time (she was a total bitch), but that also ended badly, which is the result of my fourth mistake, no protection. My spell worked on my boss, and she was indeed nicer to me, but because I didn't have any protection, I got attacked and probably even possessed by a Djinn, which caused a lot of damage to my life, made me lose my job, got me into serious debt, and manipulated other people to hate me. I am all good now, I have an iron nail to protect myself from Djinns (they hate iron), and learned a lot of stuff from Lucky Mojo's forum, which has knowledge that also applies to witchcraft. I feel like I am in much better control of magick than I did in 2012 and 2017, and I am still learning more and more stuff everyday about magick. I also have a routine self blessing/protection sessions to keep myself away from evil spiritual beings, Djinns are already bad enough, but they are pretty low level in terms of evil, I can't imagine what else that is worse than the Djinns, better protect myself.

I know some taoist magic myself. It is one of the few complete bodies of work there is, western is very fragmented and mixed with Christianity. You should be able to find much more in taoist then wicca.

@@elasticharmonyyea, the only problem is finding the right group for taoist magic. There are five groups, and the one that primarily deals with magick are the Fu Dao Pai (符道派), but there is no credible teacher of that group in existence outside of China, and I live in the US. I consider myself to be a folk magickian, and so far, most of my knowledge came from my Wiccan days and Hoodoo, but I am planning to add the right variations of Taoist magick into the mix. Since folk magickian is syncretist, just do normal magick for common folks.

I’m still a beginner to witchcraft. But the one thing I know I made a mistake on was contacting spirit guides (via pendulum) without protection or researching more about it. I don’t think anything has gone wrong. But I know to definitely phrase my sentences correctly and do protection work.

My big mistake as a beginner witch was binding the love of my life to me and then losing the spell jar..... Needless to say we broke up, and as soon as we did, I found this jar and had to go through the whole ordeal of releasing him. As soon as I had done so and released the contents and cleansed the jar, suddenly he wanted back with me. We've been together a few years now.
