My wife is from Brazil. We took a rental car from the airport to Itaguai (~40 miles). We drove all over from Copa to Baja de Recreio to a ferry that drove us to Ilha Grande. It wasn’t much worse than driving in DC, Baltimore, and New York. At times traffic was very congested and the major difference was having motorcycles and scooters FLY by you in heavy traffic at all times.

Mr. Wolters, that may be your best Brazil video to date. Very useful to any gringo coming by to see our immense and multifaceted country. You've done more for Brazilian image abroad than the Ministry of Tourism... and the tip about favela tours is spot-on. It's really dangerous for most people, and although some favelas in Rio have amazing views, it just may not be worth the risk (not to mention the issue you tackled, really worth mentioning).

Absolutelly accurate. Congrats, you’ve got it perfectly. When in Rio, stay in the “Zona Sul” area; try not to know only Copacabana beach; Ipanema-Leblon and Prainha are great too. Búzios is a must go (3hrs trip; best stay at least 2 days there). The Botanic Garden is beautifull. Go for a walk around the “Lagoa”; stop for a drink at the sunset. Try to learn some portuguese words; the effort is always appreciated.

@micco6020 His oldest brother was burned to death in the street; he owned a bar when he was 15 where a drug dealer shot one of his customers in the head for disposing of a body, there were weekly shoot outs with police where several people would die, his best friend was killed by the police because she was in the way she was 11 years old (federal police are not prosecuted for shooting people), they called his favela “Little Gaza” because the violence was similar, he saw a drug dealer castrate a man because he was abusing kids. It seems like I hear a new harrowing story every week. HOWEVER, they didn’t lock their doors. He says that he never felt more secure than he did when he lived in the favela. His favela was ruled over by a drug lord. He didn’t want the police showing up to disturb his business. If you had a problem you didn’t call the police, you called the drug lord. He would mete out punishment in a barbaric way. As long as you just lived your life you were safe. Unless the police showed up, then it was time to run for your life. (Note: He left Brazil in 2003.)

In most of the Churches it does apply. However, it is always the Father who has the authority to demand it or not, which means that in some Churches it might be allowed.

Wolters is a fun guy and he does make you want to visit the places. About this vídeo, I understand your point regarding the "favela tours", but I don't totally agree with it. Visiting a favela on a tour helps you get out of your bobble and face your prejudices. Favelas are culturally interesting, vibrant and dynamic.

Hey, Walters... you talked about Carnaval, wich is our biggest party here in Brasil, but let me ask you: had you ever been in a Festa Junina? Its thge second biggest and best party we have in our country, it happens country wide and, like carnaval, its diferent on every place you are: on big cities like São Paulo it happens mostly inside the church, you have to pay to get in.. in São Paulo country side and Minas, its most like, in a public square... there are also one who is the biggest in Brazil, is on northeast, I believe in Pernambuco, but Im not sure. It always happens on winter, on june (so, "junina") it last the whole month, every weekend of the month... some places happens earlier too, taking one weekend from may, maybe.. or ends later, taking one weekend from july... actually, it is somehow like 4th july, lots of shacks, with games and FOOOOOOD... good food, and tipical food only for this event (some you may had eaten in street food places, though, like "espetinhos de carne"), music and dancing... for you to dance too... dance the "quadrillha" is really fun. They do mostly "sertanejo" music, but it varies too, like, , in São Paulo, you may find some rock music (I even went to one who was playing a cover band from Eric Clapton songs), sometimes, in Northeast you will definetly find lots of Forró music, its always a good dance. only lack the fireworks. And, in my opinion, cos its a winter event, I like more the parts where it actually will be cold, like São Paulo and under it (south of the SP state), Though Minas may be cold, cos there they have some high places, so... cold... Also, for a beautifull place to visit, check out here on youtube Chapada das Mesas, its on Maranhão.. the best video I saw is from a chanel called RoleFamilia, its well done, good camera shots, shows you lots of places there. Since the place is not really famous, its very few videos of it here, but it is worthy. I hope you liked the suggestion. I like your videos. 🙂

The month of fires, electrical fires, hazardous materials in homes, dangers IN a house, electrocutions in the US are faaaar higher than any of these places. Or that these "contraptions" would cause. Infrastructure here in the US is disgusting, and you're worrying about the shower being like that?😂😂 Cultural shocks, lovely to travel around the world huh? To me, the horrendous Infrastructure in the US and hazardous living was a cultural shock. Living in houses 70+ yrs old. To us (at least my country) a house 30yrs of age, is already considered old. Don't worry, the showers not gonna bite you at all😂

another good vid from you but I have a couple of thingd to add if I may. Speaking English isn't so common, only among the younger generations. I found it was German, Spaish and then (American)English. If you are Vegetarian you will have a hard time as it is a concept they just dont have. The fresh fruit and coffee isnt that great as the good stuff all goes for export. Be careful where you go and keep an eye out on those around you. You'll be fine but dont be careless. Rice, beans and farofa, mix the beans and farofa togeher on your plate. If your a guy(s) you will be hassled frequently any time of day/night by lovely girls looking for "company" esp Copocabana. All that is for Rio.

What really pitty is, they hardly speak other languages. Maybe you can communicate in a better hotel in other language than brasilian portuguese. So as I was there a week ago I hardly could communicate with anybody because they don't speak English, French or Spanish which would have been for me convenient and I thought these languages would be good in case you can't say what you want or need in Portuguese. That makes it really difficult to do sime smalltalk when you are not fluent in Brasilian.
