This is why Joel Grey is a legend. The emotion in some of those lines is impressive.

No wonder Joel Grey is such a Broadway legend. Not just singing the song, but really living the character, with every nuance played perfectly. One of the all-time greats.
@GregJamesMusic11 ай бұрын
Even the way he struggles to put his gloves on - that might have been a genuine flub on his part, but it's perfectly in character for Amos, and Grey doesn't miss a beat.

Yes, a true artist. I haven't seen him onstage since the '80's, but then I saw him in revivals of two shows in which he recreated his classic roles, "Cabaret" and "George M!". What a privilege!

Not if you consider that "Mr. Cellophane" is a pastiche of the great Bert Williams song "Nobody," which deals with the same loneliness and inconsequentiality, but also has the added layer of the Black experience in America.

@pinz20229 жыл бұрын
Agent Fungus I never said otherwise. It's just that 38 year-old Joel Grey with that pancake clown makeup and the sinister fake German accent gave me childhood nightmares. He was so much more loveable as the fatherly Master Chiun in 1985's "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins". He's also far more approachable doing a Chicago accent, as he does here. I don't go back far enough to appreciate his earlier work.
@agentfungus97429 жыл бұрын
pinz2022 : I'm sure more than a few kids were scared of the Emcee character. Creepy characters are more fun. Mr. Grey gave an excellent explanation of the Emcee character on a KZbin of an old (1972) David Frost show. I don't know if I'd violate some KZbin policy by providing the link. It shouldn't be too hard to find. There is also a great KZbin video of him doing an awesome dance number on the "Eddie Cantor Show."

2/22/22 22:22 I Officially took the title of "Mr. Cellophane". I was at Twin Peaks, where else would I be on Twosday ? I had been there for about 2 hours, ordered beers and dinner. Went to the restroom and came back to the bar, only moved a few seats down. Not even on the opposite side of the bar, didn't take my glasses off, didn't shave my goatee or cut my hair... only took off my jacket. Sat down and the Same beautiful young lady asked me how I was doing tonight and if I wanted anything to drink and if I wanted to order any food. Like I had just walked in. It was a pretty slow night compared to most nights too. Even heard one girl ask the other girl where the guy a few seats down went to. After a couple of shots, I said, "Doesn't it suck when a guy walks out on his bill ?" She said, "Yeah, it does." So I offered to pay "the guys" bill, to which she said, "Are you sure ?" I told her I was, to which she said, "You're sweet." Now, when I Do happen to get noticed, I get called a few different names, but being called "sweet" for paying my Own bill ? That's a Real First !

I've used my existence as Mr. Cellophane to get a Free Lunch before. Went to a Sam's Sports Grill and it was pretty obvious the bartenderette hardly knew I was there, so, when I was done, just got up and left. Went back a week or so later and it was like I had never been there. Nothing like, "Hey ! I remember you ! You didn't pay last time !" Nope. Just business as usual.

***** The film was done in a more realistic style. Joel's doing it in the style of the stage musical, where all the songs are done as vaudeville numbers. It's not supposed to be naturalistic.

Just saying, in the movie the numbers are also performed as vaudeville cutaways.

The Reilly performance was a brilliant rendition in the movie but the two performances are completely different things - let's get John C Reilly to perform it in live in concert, in 25 years and then compare the two.

Saw Joel in this...poor fella...looked like a discarded hand-pupped. No energy or soul. The film version was worse...not worth mentioning... My money is on Barney Martin who embodied the spirit of Bert Williams himself. (Based on Berts' song...'Me? I'm Just Nobody.")
