I do think the Saturn DIN is useful in certain situations, but VGA is a MUCH MUCH better port imo. The fact you can screw it in to ensure a connection and don't have to worry about bent pins, it makes it a much better physical connection. I wish he had both options available.

Nah man there’s no sound in vga so you need another cord. Just follow the arrow on the lead you will never bend a pin plus if you do need noses work great

@@VideoGameEsoterica its not so much about that, it's that this pinout of DIN 10 is not universal at all and is in fact very hard to find. I literally could not find one cable for it other than the misteraddons ones, except for basic Saturn composite cables, and i think s-video. no component or any other output was available, whereas with vga, adapters are plentiful and cheap. vga is way more universal and this is practically a bespoke plug. however, other than that gripe, i love the board

@@HugYourCat I agree 100%. VGA cables are easy to find. I have several already, so I don't even need to buy one. And Startech makes VGA to component cables, so I can get them on Amazon, Newegg, and everywhere else that carries that brand. Just yesterday I spent half an hour looking for the micro hdmi cable for my Raspberry Pi 4. (It was hanging off the back of another raspberry pi.) If it had full size HDMI I would have that half hour back. I feel the same way about the proprietary 5v plug on the PSP. I even have a DAC that has a proprietary I2S port that I literally can't find an affordable cable for. In my opinion all devices should use standard power and video ports, so I don't have to keep track of proprietary cables. Like I said in my other comment, I won't be buying this board because of the video port they chose.

I think the new board really cleans things up. Between having a connector that handles both video and audio, not needing an extra adapter for s-video, and cleaning up the power situation, I'm sold. Admittedly, I'm not the biggest fan of the circular Saturn DIN, but I think the benefits outweigh the time I will spend figuring out which way is up on the connector. I'd love to see a comparison between 18 bit and 24 bit color options to see how much better it looks.

A comparison is V hard to shoot as I need to shoot it off a CRT and that generally is ugly and you get moire in spots that you’d never see with your eye. One of those “hard to show in camera” differences that’s immediately apparent if you are just using your eyes

Also worth mentioning that it removes the toslink port, so you can only use mini toslink for optical audio. Important for us who use dedicated amps and dacs on our setups.

​@@drewba7741 Beg to differ, stock N64 audio sounds pretty stretched out on a pair of 500watt RMS floor standers, it's not until you upsample and raise the sound stage that it really comes to life, though 16-Bit 44.1Khz if fine for most peoples setups, once you hear the N64 OG version of MM beautiful synth soundtrack in 32-Bit 768Khz or DSD512, you really do appreciate it, you can also just use DAC aggregation to thicken up and make the audio much richer/fatter, 4 PCM5100B DAC's will feed any speaker set and amp nicely and only cost 5 bucks each, so you don't have to spend a fortune to get higher resolution audio, just don't do what Grezzo did with MM3D and smother it in reverb, ruins the observatory synth track, flanging would have made more sense.

I don't like the change to the Saturn video port. I realize the advantages, but I already have VGA cables and VGA adapters, so it's an extra proprietary set of cables I need to buy. Honestly, it's a deal breaker for me and a reason to choose a different analog IO board.

I run my analogue based MISTer in RGB on an old Sony 2530 PVM. My buddy turned me on to Extron stuff and I use an RGB 203 Rxi as an interface for H and V adjustments. It looks superb! The composite and S video picture is excellent as well. I’d love to upgrade to this board and see how Ninja Gaiden 3 looks while I practice its punishment.

The quality and color accuracy see a bump. Those extra bits in the color reduce down banding a lot on CRT. That’s the real night and day difference

Are you using a Saturn DIN to BNC connection to the CRT? or a Saturn DIN to VGA and then VGA to BNC? My 21 inch Trinitron has both inputs VGA and BNC.

The analog out was often useful for monitors where the digital output wouldn’t recognize, as their VGA ports were generally more tolerant of odd signals. This now requires a proprietary adapter for that use case, which is a bit disappointing. Moreover, I’ve had some pretty significant issues over the years with SEGA’s Mini-DIN video jacks, which has me a bit concerned. They have a habit of getting loose over time, to the degree that the metal indent on the connector housing bends itself out of shape after normal use and has to be bent back with pliers to ensure a proper connection. (If I don’t do that, I lose at least one of the three video color channels over time and have to adjust the position of the cable to get it back.)

I did an unscientific comparison between my n64 console s-video out vs the old analog io board with mister's vga port to the same CRT and I honestly can't tell the difference (other than sharpness difference inherent to s-video vs component). For me at least, this isn't worth the 65 dollar board, plus getting a new enclosure, plus getting a 35 dollar cable that is 65 dollars from the trusted places I'd normally get it from (how is it only 35 dollars?? I'm suspicious).

A huge PSA for everybody is that someone has made pulse with modulation cores for Saturn, PlayStation and N64. These cores give you the exact same 24-bit result out of the analogue board, but it works on the V1 analogue board so no new purchase required.

Thanks for the review! I ordered mine a few days ago, waiting for that to ship now. Spent way too much on my Mister system(like $550) riiight before Taki Udon announced his clone board, and they were out of the analog systems so I just grabbed a digital dual-RAM system and waited a few months. Really kicking myself for not magically anticipating Taki's clone board, I spent my annual bonus on my Mister, but this board's looking pretty promising. Picked up a SNAX64, a few Guncons(each gen) and a Jogcon for Ridge Racer 4, so I should have a pretty rad setup soon. Edit: He didn't have the rear panels in stock, btw, hasn't had them in stock for months, so I just plan on having an open butt on my Mister. Not ideal, but I can't keep waiting, I've waited years to use this nice 32" CRT for some real retro gaming.

You can build a MiSTer setup for little more than £150 all in, just get a second hand DE10 Nano of fleabay, I got mine for £75 including a 256GB already setup SD card, a V2.9 RAM module for 20-30 squid, all you need then is a either a REFLEX PRISM for just about every video output format available, HQ audio and an Xbox 360 gamepad that you probably already have lying around, or if you want to keep costs under £120, just use a GBS-C board, which you can get for £25 and will give you VGA, RGB, S-Video etc, you can build a MiSTer for dirt cheap.

It's hugely higher-value than prior systems but I could've saved hundreds of poor-person dollars by waiting a couple months - that's 1,000% regret zone. Also waited since Monday for the Mister Addons analog pro board to ship, no updates. During that period I purchased a Guncon 1 from Japan, two Guncon 2s and two Guncon 3s from the USA, and later a Jogcon from the USA. The US Guncons arrived two days ago, the JP Guncon arrives Monday and the Jogcon arrives Monday. Analog pro board hasn't even been shipped. Not feeling Mister Addons, tbh, comes off very rude in messages on his site when I send him polite inquiries. And it's absurd that he gets the analog boards in stock but doesn't have any back-plates ready in time, so I'm gonna have an open-assed, super-premium-priced Mister. Good on him for sponsoring you, you're my favorite retro gaming channel, but I'll be funneling friends Taki's way.

Think I'm just gonna build a second MiSTer build, so I have one for my desk setup and one for my TV setup, the second one I can build with the I/O direct & BliSTer, plus dual V3.2 SDRAM modules, plus a i2s waveblaster header for installing an internal original 90s Yamaha MIDI GS/XG module and a CM6631A DAC for those phat analogue oscillators, I'd love to install a CMSLPT TSR as well, which has dual Philips SAA1099P sound chips for that beautiful rich sounding real-time chip tune audio (PSG), would love to install a OPL3 as well, but not sure if there would be enough I/O left to do so, but if I could, I would have the trifecta of synth hardware (PSG/FM/MIDI), I could also just spend a bit extra (£140) and get the DREAMBLASTER X16GS, which does all synth standards and does them beautifly, it has a Dream/Roland GS Bank (officially licensed, ROM bank), Dream CleanWave Bank (official, Buran Bank, OPL3-FM General MIDI bank, GXSCC Chiptune bank, plus a powerful DSP for multiple efects and what not, it will cover every MiSTer system there is, and systems like the X6800 and Amiga can use multiple audio standards, like Street Fighter 2 on the X6800 has a beautiful chip tune soundtrack mode, nothing beats real chip tune music playing through a real phat analogue oscillator.

@@VideoGameEsoterica If I can find a second hand DE10 it might be worthwhile, I use Roland Sound Canvas 3.2 on my current MiSTer via an Intel M5 X86 compute stick and a CYP DAC, sounds pretty damn good for soft synth, but I heard my neighbour's Dreamblaster X2GS on his MiSTer setup the other night, and it just blew me away to be honest, so much richer and fatter than soft synth.

I'm more interested in the USB power supply. There's a problem causing noise on the DE10nano by using just any power supply, is that problem still present for USB power supplies? with the tap to project, external SSD, controller batteries, Wi-Fi and BT the MiSTer power requirements are larger than what the OG PSU can do

Love getting upgrades like this! Personally as an owner of a digital board using analogue over hdmi to my CRT I wouldn't buy it due to too many dealbreakers : saturn port, single ram, loss of power switch (sync on green should be a setting not a switch). If/when all that is solved (maybe some of it will be solved by Taki's clone) I'll hapilly hand over my hard-earned cash. Also I love the idea of dual video out but that's not available with dual ram.

@@VideoGameEsoterica I'm just too greedy and I want it all: Dual Ram (that hardly anything uses but I bought it so going to Single Ram seems like a downgrade), Power switch : I've just got used to using this and it's so much nicer than having an external switch or pressing down on my mister stack, so for me the upgrade would be 24bit / Much cleaner video and dual simultaneous video (but I can't have that because it's an either/or choice). Like a lot of people I'm happy to pay for upgrades as long as there aren't any compromises in other areas or unnecessary extra costs (having to buy new cables, etc). I do have to balance all that by saying I absolutely love that people like MisterAddons/Porkchop are keeping the scene alive with new hardware, it's just that I'm stuck now waiting to see what Taki delivers because imho these boards miss the mark and aren't enough of an upgrade for old users but are probably good enough for new MiSTer owners.

Direct video is just as good as the DAC you use. So it’s hard to say. Best bet is go analog directly from an analog IO

I don't own a Mister yet but seriously thinking about getting into it. I have a 20 inch flat screen CRT TV that has component connection. I have it connected to my modded Wii and PS2 for occasional old school gaming. If I were to get a FPGA system, with my Sharp 20 inch flat CRT ( I do not own a PVM), will I benefit any from using the Saturn output rather than VGA output for sure? Or is VGA good enough?

It’s not so much color as it is smoothness in gradients. You lose the color banding you see in 18-bit output

I don't see how this is gonna work well with scart? With the old board, I have a VGA to Scart adapter and get Audio with RGB straight to my old CRT without and extra audio connection. Scart was a huge thing in Europe.

Just a design choice. There is one cable that’s universal for all the diff video signals. I’ve always felt personally that good quality VGA to X cables put some undue strain on the port due to how heavy those cables are. At least the ones I use and trust the signal quality on. I’ve shown that in some analog videos where the cable wants to tip the MiSTer at like a 45 degree angle

I'm hoping with this analog board I can output accurate composite video without dot crawl or rainbowing effects caused by adapters. I'm not sure if the current native composite cores using an analog board achieve this. If anyone knows please leave a comment. I currently have a digital only solution and use the the Axunworks converter in my DAC chain to output composite. It has a pot to adjust the dot crawl etc that works great to remove most artifacts (most people don't know it has a pot). Still if a better composite solution can be had from native composite cores I must give it a try.

@@VideoGameEsoterica It works great, and arrived in a month or two which was sooner than I expected. Just be sure to use the pot to adjust dot crawl / rainbowing or you'll think it's garbage. The image is also as sharp as my extron s-video to composite solution which people talk highly of. On the customer service side, be aware that if you email them they take a while to respond and English isn't their first language, but I was able to understand them just fine, and they were polite and answered the questions competently.
